Car rampage in Leipzig (May 2026)
In der Fußgängerzone (Grimmaische Straße) in Leipzig kam es Anfang Mai 2026, nur wenige Wochen vor dem WGT zu einer tragischen Amokfahrt, zwei Menschen kamen dabei ums Leben, sechs wurden verletzt.
Über den Täter und die genauen Motive ist wenig bekannt, es dürfte sich laut Wikipedia um einen psychisch kranken 33-jährigen gebürtigen Deutschen handeln.
Der Amokfahrer konnte mit Hilfe eines Asylwerbers und eines algerischen Taxifahrers überzeugt werden, das Tatauto zu verlassen, und gemeinsam mit einem Polizisten fixiert werden. Der Täter wurde dank couragierter Bürger nicht erschossen, sondern konnte lebend festgenommen werden.
Im östlichen Einfahrtsbereich der Grimmaischen Straße wurden daraufhin Poller aufgestellt und bei der Skulptur "Unzeitgemäße Zeitgenossen" des Bildhauers Bernd Göbel entstand eine Gedenkstelle.
Laut Medien-Berichten soll der mutmaßlicher Amokfahrer die Tat in einer Chatnachricht angedeutet haben und polizeibekannt gewesen sein und wurde laut einem Artikel in der Zeit nur wenige Tage vor der Tat aus der Psychiatrie entlassen.

In early May 2026, just a few weeks before the WGT, a tragic rampage occurred in the pedestrian zone (Grimmaischen Straße) in Leipzig, two people were killed and six were injured.
Little is known about the perpetrator and his exact motives, according to Wikipedia, he is believed to be a 33-year-old German national with mental health issues.
With the help of an asylum seeker and an Algerian taxi driver, the driver was persuaded to exit the vehicle and was subdued with the assistance of a police officer. Thanks to the courageous actions of citizens, the perpetrator was not shot but was apprehended alive.
Bollards were subsequently installed at the eastern entrance to Grimmaische Straße, and a memorial was established near the sculpture “Unzeitgemäße Zeitgenossen” by sculptor Bernd Göbel.
According to media reports, the suspected rampage driver had hinted the crime in a chat message and was known to the police, according to an article in Die Zeit, he had been released from a psychiatric facility just a few days before the incident.
