◈ Throwback Thursday

Throwback to the expensive tour so far

Life is a riddle, life is a tale; whoever sings the song, one must hum along. Two years ago, in September 2024, I embarked on what was perhaps the most memorable and longest trip of my life, a journey to the Northern Areas of Pakistan, a region I had never visited before. I had absolutely no idea, nor could I have even imagined, that these areas would be so breathtakingly beautiful that even Paradise itself might seem pale in comparison.

Initially, I didn't want to go at all; I made up so many excuses to my friends to try and ditch the plan, but they were stubborn to take me along, insisting that they enjoyed my company. Eventually, I agreed to go, though I was terrified of landslides and similar unforeseen hazards; I frequently saw news reports about such incidents and heard stories of accidents, and my parents also expressed reservations, suggesting that perhaps I shouldn't go.

During those days, my health was not cooperating with me at all. You know how it is, when you aren't feeling well physically, nothing outside appeals to you; you feel a sense of reluctance toward everything and experience a state of agitation and irritability. Yet, I was trying my best to appear cheerful, even though a sense of inner turmoil lingered within me.

The route was so treacherous that sleep eluded me; despite the passage of time, my eyes remained wide open. I was gripped by the fear that if I closed them, the driver might take a wrong turn, or some accident might occur, dreadful thoughts kept flooding my mind. It was this very fear that kept both my eyes and my mind wide awake.

I had heard or perhaps read somewhere that when the journey is arduous and long, the destination is truly magnificent; I witnessed this firsthand. The path was so difficult that I felt a sense of dread, yet the moment I beheld the breathtaking sights awaiting me, all the fatigue of the journey vanished instantly, much like a bird of fear suddenly taking flight and disappearing from a branch.

To be honest, I wasn't really able to take many photos at the time, but since I’ve always loved photography, I was trying my best to capture the moments. The people behind the lens were mostly my friends, with whom I shared such a wonderful time. Looking back, I realize that had I not gone on that trip, I would have deeply regretted missing those moments and been furious with myself for not making the journey. I am so grateful I decided to go with my friends; I once read that memories made in the mountains are never forgotten, and the memories I created with them are something I probably couldn't even fully express in words.

At the hotel where we stayed, I made wonderful friends among the locals; we had such great conversations. There were four of us in our group, and we engaged in plenty of playful squabbles and banter even forming pairs to tease or argue with one another. Looking back on those memories... I often wish I could go back to those days and live freely once more, but such moments are rare or perhaps they simply never return.

This trip involved many unique first-time experiences such as befriending a young man who was deaf and could not say a word too. I communicated with him entirely through gestures; halfway through the trip, people even began to assume that I, too, was deaf and also have speech problem, as they would see me conversing with my friend using sign language. We still maintain a good conversation on WhatsApp, but I often find myself fondly reminiscing about those days.

There are two things I’d like to highlight because they’re so profound: firstly, that your friends told you they enjoyed your company, and in a group of friends, that’s priceless; they were the sign in your life that prompted you to go on this wonderful journey. The second is your reflection on the journey itself and on the difficulty of the path to reach the views. This is just like life itself, often the path isn’t easy, quite the opposite, but reaching the destination makes it all worthwhile.

What stunning views, what a brilliant place. I’m so glad you’ve had this once in a lifetime experience. A big hug!!🤗
