You're so immature!
I don't know about anyone else, but I am constantly feeling like I am very immature for my age. I remember back when I was a freshman (grade 9) in high school, it seemed like the seniors (grade 12) were so much older than us. I mean, they were basically adults. It wasn't just the fact that they were physically imposing, they seemed so mature and "together" as well.
Of course, by the time I became a senior in high school, I didn't feel nearly as old or adult-like as I expected them to be. In fact, through pretty much all of my life I feel like my body has aged for sure, but my mind on the other hand feels like I am still that high school freshman.
I'm smarter for sure, hopefully a bit wiser, but I still have this feeling when I am in a room full of adults that I just don't belong. I can't really explain it, but it's this feeling that just kind of sits in the back of my mind. Perhaps it is some weird form of imposter syndrome. I don't really know, but it's there, and I wonder if I am alone in feeling that way.
So there was a news story I read last week and I was going to include it in my post on Friday, but then like the ADHD fool that I am, I forgot about it. That means instead of adding as a talking point last week, I am going to dedicate a full post to it this week. Lucky you!
The story was splashed all over the cryptoverse, so I am sure you heard about it, but I didn't actually see anything here on HIVE about it. The long and the short of it (to spare you any further confusion) is that a guy was going to swap 50 million dollars of some token into AAVE I think it was. As he was doing the swap, he didn't pay attention to the liquidity or slippage in the pool and ended up getting about $36,000 for his $50,000,000.
Ridiculous right? Heartbreaking for sure! No doubt there are plenty of people, including ourselves who are thinking, what a moron, the person totally deserved to lose all that money for not paying attention to what they were doing. Like it or not, it's partly true, moving crypto around is a dangerous prospect. I get a bit nervous each time I do it. Sending small amounts first and checking to make sure you have all the info correct is paramount to not ending up wrecked.
However, I think it also sheds some light on just how immature the crypto world still is. Yes, cryptocurrency has been around for over a decade now, businesses, countries, and even Chet in the polo and khakis down the street are buying it and stacking it. The fact is though even though they are buying it, they still don't really understand it. It's not just the currency itself either. Clearly the mechanisms to move it around and to interact with it are a concept that people just haven't seemed to grasp yet.
Trust me, I get it. It's complex. We have centuries of traditional currency basically ingrained into our DNA. Paying cash, using a credit card, depositing money to a bank, writing a check (who freaking writes checks anymore?), it's all something we learn early on. In addition to that, there are protocols in place to keep funky things from happening. If you overdraft your account, you get a fee, etc. It's supposedly a well oiled machine.
I'm not saying we need overdraft fees, but if crypto is going to be something that really becomes something, we need to have some guardrails in place to keep stuff like the story above from happening. Over regulation isn't something I a looking forward to, but nobody is going to want to use a form of money where they have to worry about their 50 million dollars becoming 36 thousand dollars because of a technicality.
Like I said, it's a glaring indication of the fact that cryptocurrency is still quite young, or perhaps like me it's old but still feels young. I hope that isn't the case, because crypto needs to be taken seriously, and trust me, when you feel or act immature, you don't get taken seriously...

Man this is so true. I know every time I've attempted to do some transactions, I feel like I need a tutorial to make it happen correctly. And then one doesn't know whether the information your are reading on how to move some things around is real/true/accurate!
It's scary for sure! I've only moved a significant amount of funds around once or twice and I was practically sweating the whole time worried I was going to screw something up!

Yes, I heard that story. There was also something about exchange offering to refund their fee for this "service" :)
I almost broke out into a sweat when I heard that story! Can you imagine how they felt?! I think the dangers of making a simple mistake and losing everything is what will scare a lot of people away from self-custody/cold storage and drive them into the arms of third-party custodians. I think these third parties will be the guard rails for the crypto ecosystem. I just read something this morning that I hadn't thought of before—AI likely won't recognize or have any interest in fiat currency because of how archaic transactions are. It makes sense and makes me super bullish for crypto...at least the big three.
Yeah, that is a good point. What do you consider the third one? BTC, ETH, and ? I just hope the person was only moving a portion of whatever they had. That might make it sting a little less.
SOL would be my third pick for a non-stable coin—USTD looks like it’ll be the king in that regard.

Being immature, I think, depends on each person. I have an uncle who is already a 30-year-old man but does crazy things, goes out with us, wears his cap backwards. Many tell him that he should behave like a man his age, but he just says, 'I am as old as I feel,' and I don't feel old at all; I just enjoy life.😅

I think crypto is still a child experimenting so many things. A lot will change over the years. Right now there are still battles the little baby is fighting especially with countries and decentralization

I guess you can mess up in the fiat world too. Give your information to the wrong person and they drain your account, for example.
Regulation...If the government starts poking around, then it starts restricting and tracking. @jaki01 writes about how Germany has guardrails, so much so that they are in everyone's business all the time. It's had to transfer money or do transaction without the government controlling it. There is no financial freedom anymore. You have to prove provenance for anything you buy or sell, etc.
I like to think we could have a place--crypto--that's a little like the wild wild west, someplace where transactions can occur between people without the government sticking its nose in. The more regulation, the less freedom.
Maybe it's a case of buyer beware. We all have to be responsible for our actions. The more responsibility we give to the government, the less freedom we have.

If you didn't know I've been getting downvoted for a long time on Hive
They have been trying to bully me with downvotes and words but it doesn't affect me I've been online for over 25 years
So I've dealt with people like this before it's nothing new
But what they are doing is bad Very badi joined steemit like everyone else thinking it offers freedom but I must say steemit offered much more freedom than Hive does
Everyone already knows I only post my own original content I have no need to steal anything from anyone
I've been labelled a lot of things on Hive 😂 by the biggest farmers scammers and downvoters

I think crypto was supposed to be like that, but now that the big players are involved it is slowly going to move away from that. You might still have some chains here and there like HIVE where stuff like that might happen.
I think most of us will double check any transactions. It does help if the sites and tools show what will come out. Generally you don't get to change your mind after you hit the button.
If you see the post I shared by a crypto sceptic you will see that he has some grounds for his attitude. Crypto is not so easy to get or to spend. I know people are doing things to make it easier to spend our Hive funds, but I have not seen many places to do that around here. I'm not really looking to spend right now, but I will want to if the price goes up enough.
Oh, and I might be considered immature myself. I never felt I had to act like a serious adult all the time. I can still be into comics and loud music, but also appreciate the classic stuff.

Yeah, although I think crypto is getting more mature and more people are holding it in one way or another, I still don't think it has that mass adoption piece where it can be used freely or easily like other forms of currency.
I think it is used more in places like Venezuela where inflation is an issue. Elsewhere businesses may be wary. There are ways to quickly convert to fiat that you can spend, but I don't know what costs are involved. I have not used my crypto debit card in a long while and you have to do a few steps to convert the Hive stuff.
Hive options are pretty limited in the US, and taxes are what usually hit you the hardest.
I still feel like I'm 25 mentally, that will never change! lol I completely understand what you're saying. Funny how quickly life moves along, so much has changed since we were in high school now. But at least we still know how to enjoy life still!
That poor guy losing $50 million, that's heartbreaking. I guess that's why I check all my crypto transactions at least five times when it involves large sums of money. Call it paranoia, but I've heard of far too many people making those kind of mistakes. The last time to ever make any crypto trade is after enjoying some bourbon or scotch!

It's funny because I always wake up and see that BTC has hit a high compared to where it was, but by the time I get into work and sit at my desk it is always back down. I'll still take $74K though! Crypto definitely isn't quite for the normies yet.
Goodness! The trader should have simulated the trade before executing it! You can use tools like Tenderly or DeFiLlama’s swap simulator or CoW Protocol’s preview, which
lets you see the actual output before committing. If the trader had simulated the swap, he/she would have seen the $36K result instantly!!!
I usually check the dollar value to make sure they line up to whatever the current prices are. Especially when I am trading from one token to another or moving chains. It's easier when you are going into a stable because you pretty much know I guess.

I really understand what you said about feeling like you’re still that freshman inside, even as you grow older. I’ve felt that same “I don’t belong here” feeling too. The story about crypto sounds crazy. It really shows how one small mistake can lead to a huge loss, so being careful is very important in everything we do.

Trust me your not the only one who feels that way, sure I know I am smart, many teachers and friends and the MEnsa board have told me so, sure I know I am not boring, but when in a crowd I tend to sulk off to a coner and stay quiet feeling inside out of place so I can relate
