April => PR month! 1:26:17 on half marathon!

After breaking my personal records on the 5 and 10 km last week, I decided to go for an attempt on the half marathon today.
While my goal was to beat 90 min (1:30:00), my old pr was still stuck on 1:32:29. I didn’t do a taper or carb loading or treat today like something special I just wanted to give it a try on a random day - meaning that if I can do it today I don’t need perfect conditions to pull it off!
Warm up:
My warmup today was 20 km easy cycling (appointment at the office) and 2 km easy jogging before starting my run. These 2 km jog allowed me to start in an area where I would not be bothered too much by traffic, infact there were only 6 crossroads during the entire run so chances were I could just run without having to slow down for traffic.

Strategy:
I created a plan in garmin that incorporated negative splits and would pace me to 1:27:59 - but I trew that out of the window as 4:05/km felt steady. I decided to take a little more risk and tried to hold that constant pace rather than using negative splits (=start easy and gradually increase pace). The first 18 km I was able to hold that pace before it got tough

From 18 km onwards I focussed on reducing the slowing down as much as possible. At 20 km I found a little more energy left to get back on track and finish strong.
Overall 6 minutes faster than my old PR.
2026 goals:
Sub 20 5k = ✅ 19:29
Sub 40 10k = ✅ 39:09
Sub 90 HM = ✅ 1:26:17
Sub 180 FM
Happy running!

STOPCongratulations! Nicely done! A new personal best sub 90 minutes at 20 km is impressive! I liked your attitude of doing it on a regular day without any special preparation because now you know you can easily do it anytime. That has to be a great mental boost. Great strategy of not increasing the pace as you went, it sure paid off!
It's been a great year for you on those personal bests, keep it up!

That consistency is so impressive! I reckon you could almost crack 3 hours for the marathon in training. Does the watch help you stay motivated with your 1 km splits giving live feedback.
Thanks man!
It depends: during this run where it went very well it made it so much easier as I knew I had it from 15km onwards that was sufficient margin that to just cruise if I had to. But with my November 2025 marathon where I did not manage to hold the pace after 7km it was hard to have a constant reminder for another 35km that you are not running in line with the plan.
For the sub 3 attempt I will probably use it! Currently considering this pacing plan - only slightly negative splits.

I had a good garmin fenix 3 when it first came out like 10 years ago. I never really used all the functionally. It has only just died but I only replaced it with the bottom of the range forerunner 55. Which is still pretty good, I just need to learn which options are best for me!
Haha yeah most of the stuff is just overkill in functions. I am trying this specifically as I have the tendency to go too fast early on - which this should help to correct.
I have the fr 965 - the navigation and music functions are very good, other than that it is overkill for me as I don’t do all the other sports it supports.
It is really satisfying when we set a goal and manage to achieve it.
I congratulate you for that.
Your numbers are really impressive.
