Opportunity comes but Once

Many times, we hear the sQtatement “opportunity comes but once”, which indicates that we should not play with any opportunity to better our lives. But there are people who were given opportunity once, twice and even a third time and they still missed it or let it slip away.
I have a nephew who is very close to my family and a friend to my eldest son. They are both of the same age and grew up together as brothers. Because of our family closeness, the boy is almost part of my family. When they both were in secondary school class 5, my nephew decided not to continue with his education and went to learn electrical installation while my son continue with his studies.
The next year, as my son advanced to final year of secondary school, and where about enrolling for the secondary school leaving certificate exams, I called my nephew and advice him to join my son and enroll for the certificate exams, with the promise to support his enrollment financially. I explained to him the importance of owing a secondary school certificate for his future prospects and opportunities. He turned down the offer, insisting he was ok with his electrical installation training. My son did the exams and obtain his certificate.
Last year January, I heard of a charity program that offers free enrollment for secondary school final year students who cannot afford the money. The only thing they need to do, was to pay a mandatory 2 months lesson tutorial classes to prepare them for the exams. I immediately thought of my nephew and called him to inform him about it. I encouraged him to go for it, and have him the money to pay for the tutorial classes.
However, the boy only went to the lessons classes for just two weeks, and then abandoned it, claiming he was too busy with work. Just like that, the opportunity slipped away from his hands and I couldn't do anything about it seeing that he didn't see the importance of having a certificate.
Two weeks ago, this same boy to me looking for financial support to enroll for the school leaving certificate exams, but now it came at the wrong time for me. When he told me about it, my first statement to him was, “I told you about the importance of having a certificate and gave opportunities twice but you didn't take them seriously, but now you are coming at the wrong time.” Now, I am not able to do anything for my nephew as I am currently facing financial constraints. Though I promised to help if this improve before the month end, but I feel pity for him because I am not sure about fulfilling that promise given my current financial situation.
This experience has layed bare the truth about the saying “opportunity comes but once”, and how it plays out in reality. Whenever you see any opportunity to improve your life, never joke or play with it because you might not get another chance like that again, or if you do, the circumstances might not be as favorable as the first.
