What Job Hunting Taught Me About Money, Patience, and Survival

An image generated with AI

There are certain lessons in life you can only truly learn when it is your turn to endure them, and the process of job searching is one of them.

I used to think that the search itself would be the most difficult task, but it has become clear to me that the search is only a segment of the challenge; the other, greater task lies in the journey undertaken during the search because the waiting itself does its own peculiar testing, targeting your mental capacity, your finances and your morale all at the same time.

When there is no steady income, everyday looks like financial calculation; you keep doing this calculation in your head about what you should spend money for, what you should avoid and for how long the situation could last before it takes its toll and the calculations began to seep into all facets of your daily routine.

Through job searching I have learned that money is not just about how to make it, but also how long you can endure and how long you can sustain yourself when nothing seems to be coming in, and how to manage the little you have until something to earn money comes again.

Patience also begin to have a new meaning; it becomes something you must learn to practice whether you like it or not, especially in a time when when things are not moving your way.

It also forces you to change the way you see yourself and make you questions your worth. But along the line, you will come to the realization that your worth is not meansure by how long you gets a job.

I have also learned that a lot of people do not understand how difficult it is to constantly show up, to never stop trying and to keep believing in yourself and your ability to overcome even when the outside world doesn't offer a sign that it supports or understands anything that you're doing and you're forced to acknowledge that simply staying afloat is achievement enough for the present.

So yes, searching for a job has taught me about money, and it has also taught me patience, and how to be resilient. It has also taught me what it takes to have quiet strength and be able to continuously put one foot in front of the other, even when the road ahead is not looking like it.
