When Losing your Right is Right

One thing life keeps teaching me is that being right does not always guarantee peace. Many times, arguments, accidents, and unnecessary problems happen simply because someone refuses to let go of their “right.” We are living in a time where everyone wants to stand on their right, defend their stands and prove that they are right, even if leads to harm in the end. However, letting go sometimes do not mean weakness, it's wisdom.

I witnessed an incidence recently, that demonstrate this fact practically.

About a week ago, I was walking home from shopping along our street, and there was a man walking ahead of me with his head down like he was deeply thinking or something. Then, a bike was coming behind us with speed. Normally, bike used the center of the narrow street, but this man was walking at the center of the street. The bike man expected that the man would step aside from the center of the street, but that was not to be, the man didn't noticed anything coming from behind at all.

As the bike got closer and the bike man realized the man wasn't moving away, he quickly swerve of the center of the street to avoid hitting him. That small compromise saved both of them from accident and trouble that would have followed. However, rather than moving on, the biker dude actually halted his bike and was looking to pick up a fight with the other guy.

The pedestrian confessed to being in the wrong and apologizing right away, however, the bike man didn't accept the apology. He continued charging for a fight, as if giving up his right of way for that moment was a big loss to him.

That was when I told him something simple: sometimes you lose your right to do what is right. Avoiding trouble does not make you wrong. It only shows that you value life more than your ego.

I explained to him that if he had insisted on his “right” and hit the man, nobody would care who was correct. They would only see a wounded person and blame the rider for not slowing down. The law would not ask him, “Were you right?” It would ask, “Why did you not avoid the accident?”

This is how people are getting themselves into problems today; not because they were wrong, but because they refuse to bend.

This thing happened everywhere, on the road, in relationships, at work places, and at home, people want to maintain their pride over peace. They want to stand on their ground even if it causes problems for everyone. What do would you gain from being right if it leads to damage or pain at the end?

There is one truth we should know; to maintain peace, we need to learn how to step back sometimes. You can give up your right and still not be wrong. You are not a full for choosing to do so, you are wise.

Protecting your peace and sanity should matter more than winning argument. Sometimes, letting go is the real victory.

This is an incredible interpretation of what is right. A situation as simple and common as avoiding an accident became a little lesson in life. What a great job! @thelastdash
