How do You Manage Working from Home with Kids Around

Imagine the stress I go through daily with 2 grade school kids while working from home, because I entrusted the family business in my wife's care. It’s a tug of war every single day. The kids don’t care if I have an emergency or a deadline. I have to drop them off in the morning and pick them up at noon, make them lunch and then, before I can even breathe a sigh of relief, there they are, standing in front of my desk with their homework. There is no excuse I can give that’s going to get me off, except I attended to them.

Even if I indulge them a bit by giving them that sort of exercise from their work books, they still come to me with questions over the exercise. Still, I tried to concentrate through all the clatter. The only thing that’s softened it a bit is when they had their beloved show on TV. But when the power is out, I knew I’d require two additional hands to care for them. Sometimes these little brats will just crawl on top of my back while I’m working on my phone just to get me to play with them.

Sometimes I think I’m losing it, running out of steam to cope with things. This daily homework, school clothes preparation for the next day, making thread and drafting/editing blog posts and all while still having some time to look human, is just too much work for a man.

Some days I just set aside online work, take the kids to school and take a nice long nap before school pick up. This schedule helps slightly in maintaining my enthusiasm for whatever the kids would toss at me for the day. It made me wonder If I’ve got my wife who shares some of the kids' workload and it's still hard to keep up with the kids in addition to my online work, how much worse will it be for single dads! It ain’t easy on them, of course.

These days, I started thinking about hiring a home teacher for the kids, so I can focus more on my online stuff. but the economy isn’t smiling on me. And even when I do hire a home teacher, they don’t come daily. Most I’ve seen only show up 2 or 3 times a week. So, it wouldn’t totally solve the problem. I suppose I’ll have to get innovative and invent ways to keep them busy on their own when they arrive home from school. I don’t know any other creative stuff I can get them involved in aside from school books and tv movies. You can suggest for me something you know that can help.

I can’t really complain though because I’m living the type of life that I love, and one that fits my personality. It’s great having kids around for most of the time. Even though they’re little and can’t reason like grown ups, they’re my first buddy to share my victories and losses with. And they can be so kind in their response. Being a Dad has been a learning process. It reminds me that, even when I’m low and down, what I’m building is worth it. A bond with my girls, a home and a life that truly counts.
