Repetitive behavior is so common that we have come to consider it normal.

But if we focus a little and make a more acute observation, which is honestly quite necessary in these times we are living in, as many contemporary philosophers and sociologists agree with me.

  • We have moved from an era where we sought the truth to an era where identity is being renounced.

I will explain why this is happening and how it manifests itself, because in order to understand the change, we must see how current thinking differs from philosophies and dogmas.

Definition;

  • Philosophy: It is based on questioning. It is an open, critical, and often uncomfortable process. It requires self-doubt and a willingness to change one's mind in the face of a better argument.

  • Cultural dogma: It is based on prefabricated answers. It is an unquestionable truth that is accepted in order to belong to a group. It does not seek to understand the world, but to confirm that "we" are right and "they" are wrong.

Why has this change occurred?

This does not mean that people or society have stopped thinking out of laziness or sloth, but rather that the environment has changed dramatically. Since there is an attention economy in a world of social media, there is not much time for deep reflection. Algorithms reward short, emotional messages, while dogma is fast and philosophy is slow.

There is a phrase that spoke of the loss of grand narratives, since we do not believe in grand religions today, and that void has been filled by niche micro-dogmas such as political identities, lifestyles, or urban tribes, which we could call an echo chamber of like-minded people. Our opinions become dogmas if no one questions them. We stop philosophizing and start only predicting. .

As a result of all this, we get polarization and cancellation. When philosophy dies, dialogue becomes impossible. Since my position is not a logical conclusion but a dogma of identity, I will feel any criticism of my idea as a personal attack, which generates toxic sentimentality because emotions will be worth more than facts and produces a Manichaeism where the world is divided into good and bad without many nuances, which causes us to fear expulsion from what could be called a cultural tribe, and we prefer silence to questioning. Ironically, the solution is to return to the basis of Socratic philosophy and recognize our own ignorance, because dogmas offer us security, while philosophy offers us freedom.
