Free AI models why ?

Welcome ya boy back to another rant cause i keep seeing people scratching their heads about this AI stuff specifically asking why companies like Meta are just dumping these massive models out for free like Llama or Mistral like they think Zuck suddenly grew a heart or somethin nah dawg that ain't it at all.

First off you gotta understand the scorched earth play here if you release a model that is 95% as good as the paid stuff but you make it free you basically destroy the business model for the closed source guys OpenAI and Google are trying to sell you a subscription or an API call but if I can run a local LLM on my own rig for free why am i gonna pay them so by open sourcing it they basically commoditize the actual intelligence part making it so nobody can make a profit just selling a smart chat bot that hurts the competition way more than it hurts the guy giving it away cause their money is elsewhere.

Plus think about the free labor when they drop the weights thousands of nerds go to work optimizing it quantizing it making it run on a toaster they find the bugs they figure out the best prompt formats the company gets all that R&D for zero dollars it is actually genius if you think about it crowdsourcing the optimization while looking like the good guy.

And dont forget the hardware angle someone has to buy the GPUs to run this stuff if everyone is running open source models locally or on rented servers NVIDIA is laughing all the way to the bank and big tech usually has a stake in that infrastructure somewhere.

Dont think its charity eh its 4D chess they want you hooked on their architecture so when you eventually need the enterprise grade version or the massive cloud compute to run the big boy 400B parameter version you are already in their ecosystem its the classic drug dealer tactic first hit is free.

so grab those weights download that safetensors file and spin up your own instance might as well take advantage of the corporate warfare while we can just dont think they are doing it cause they wanna be your friend stay skeptical out there.
