Ideas to get some smaller Hive projects funded
The DHF
There is often a lot to do about the Distributed Hive Fund. A part of the inflation of Hive goes into the DHF.
If you run a project on Hive, you could create a DHF proposal to get funded by the DHF.
Although I have never made a proposal myself, I do think it needs a lot of effort to get it funded.
After you create s proposal, you also need to collect enough votes for your proposal to get it funded. This means you need to do a lot of promotion of your project. Votes from whales really help in that matter.
You can have your opinion about the projects funded by the DHF, but I think the idea is nice.
But I also think it doesn't work for smaller projects...
Hive projects
One thing about Hive that is really think cool (at least, I think it is cool) is that there are quite a few interesting projects. A lot of these projects are beneficial for Hive and run by volunteers that spend time and sometimes to keep the project running and updated. I think these projects are important for Hive. They are either beneficial for the Hive users, like tools and curation initiatives, or they help to attract or onboard new users.
Since most of them are not funded by the DHF, they often use the upvotes on their project posts or delegations to fund and grow their project.
Here is a selection of projects I came across on Hive that I find interesting:
Snapie (@snapie); A project by @meno who created an app for PeakD Snaps. He's been spending quite some hours building it and adding features and is in the process of getting it in the Google Play Store. He did create a DHF proposal, but it is the question if it will get funded.
HiveTools by @ecoinstant and @thecrazygm provide a large set of Hive tools which they fund from donations (https://thecrazygm.com/hivetools)
Then you also have the different curation initiatives like @discovery-it, @ourpick, @commentrewarder and my own @topcomment.
And there are many more that I haven't mentioned yet.
Funding smaller projects
I think a lot of these projects are really good for Hive and that it would be good when these projects can grow bigger and make more impact on Hive.
Earlier this week I wrote a post about the potential power of orcas and dolphins. After I published this blog I had some thoughts on this subject and the funding of projects.
I thought: What if we made it easier for Hivers to find interesting project posts they can upvote?
Would making it easier to do this incentivize Hivers to support these projects with periodic upvotes?
Maybe a lot of them wouldn't change their voting habits and keep auto-voting the same users or manually upvoting posts from the trending page, burning Hive or even wasting their Hive Power at 100%. But I do think there is a group that will upvote these projects to support them. And the more people do that, the more it will benefit the projects.
But then the question is: How are can we make these posts easy to find by those who want to support them?
I have two ideas for this:
- A shark tank
- A #hiveproject tag
I'll explain the two options in this blog. Please share your opinions on them or contribute by sharing your own ideas on how funding of smaller projects could be improved.
Shark Tank

The Shark Tank Community would be a place where ideas meet investors. Just like the American TV show.
Do you have a project or initiative on Hive? In the Shark Tank Community you can pitch it to other Hivers.
Everyone with staked Hive can be an investor. From minnows to whales.
Support can be as simple as a periodic upvote, a delegation, or even voting for a DHF proposal.
Because only pitches for projects and initiatives are allowed to be posted in the community, the community feed should give a clean list of projects and initiatives.
As a stakeholder, you can quickly discover new projects and decide which ones deserve your support.
It would be great to have a centralised list of projects, but to get itnup and running you need a lot of promotion I think. And the community also needs to be managed to prevent abuse.
We can't exactly see how the funds are spent. But on the other hand, we don't know that for many DHF projects eithers. It's a matter of trust I think.
UPDATE:
The Shark Tank Community has been created:
https://peakd.com/c/hive-178895/created
The second idea is a bit easier to implement. We could agree to use a dedicated tag for Hive related projects, for instance #hiveproject
It's easy for project owners to add the tag to their project posts. And it's also easy for voters to check out all the posts with this tag.
Just like with the Shark Tank Community idea, we don't have insight on how projects spend their funds. We could agree that only projects that support Hive could use the tag, but we can't prevent people from using it.
Everyone who wants could add the hashtag to their posts. The question is if they will receive upvotes when they add it to a non-project post.
What do you think?
First of all would I like to know if you are willing to give some Hive projects an upvote every bow and then.
Would you take the trouble to find these projects either via a centralized community or a hashtag?
And if you do. What option would you prefer?
Or do you have a good idea yourself?
Or if you have a Hive project that could use some funding, please let me know in the comments too.
Please share your thoughts on the comments.
And feel free to spread the word in chats or via reblogging.

I actually think both options are brilliant. I'll start using the #hiveproject tag in the meantime, but I love the shark tank idea too!
We could indeed do both. Although the Shark Tank takes a bit more effort.
The tag is easy to add!
first time for me to see something about hivetools , didn't know it excisted , creating a new tag might work until people will abuse it again.

!BBH
Using the hashtag might show you even more useful tools. I probably don't know about many of them too.
And yes, where there is money to be gained, there will be abuse.
Although faking a successful Hive project might be quite hard to do.
As I mentioned in the #HHHLive show yesterday, I like every idea that gives more exposure to valuable projects and tools on HIVE... There are many of them that we don't even know about (as stresskiller's comment on this post is an instant proof of that)...
I like both of your ideas and I'm always open to hosting project owners in the show, giving them space to present their idea... The recordings could be used in the "Shart Tank" community, and people can check it out whenever they want... Something similar existed in Bro Discord, and I think PIMP Discord live show had a few of the project presentations...
Maybe both ideas could be implemented... The hashtag is easy to implement, and the first idea could take time to build up, but why not?
PS. Sharing with others for a better exposure!
I have picked this post on behalf of the @OurPick project! Check out our Reading Suggestions Posts!
Please consider voting for our Liotes HIVE Witness. Thank you!
The hashtag already is going to be adopted. I saw it in the reactions already. Feel free to add it to your Ourpick updates posts. At least I will follow the tag and upvote projects with some of my Voting Power.
I'll wait for some more reactions to see if I will also implement the idea of the Shark Tank. More positive reactions on this blog (like yours) do help to encourage me to do so 😊
I think that our @liotes update posts are perfect for the #hiveproject hashtag... Let me mention @achim03 as he is doing them... 😉
Not sure if @ourpick posts would be for that use, as it's "only" publish curation collection posts...
Crowdfunding. Ask people directly, there are always means how to secure few thousands for the beginning. And then perhaps more thanks to whale support.
Do you want to support our @topcomment initiative 😉
It is quite hard to reach everyone directly. That is why I'm opting for easier ways to bring the Hive projects under the attention of a larger group.
If the group is large enough, you don't necessarily need a whale to support it 😊
Not particularly :) While I support the idea, I believe I can use my HP more efficiently, as I am quite active myself - with all due respect :)
Haha. No problem. I was just making a point that 1-on-1 can be very time consuming.
But you might want to check the #hiveproject tag every now and then when you have some Voting Power left.
It won't be a structural support like a delegation, but it does help projects when more people would be doing that.
Sure, thanks for spreading the word ;)
❤️
Yes of course!!
I like both your ideas. The community would be a little more difficult to manage than the hashtag, but I think it could be more effective.
PS: As a curator for @discovery-it, thank you very much for the mention 😊

Thanks!
Feel free to use the #hiveproject tag in your project update posts! Who knows if itnhelps to get some more upvotes!

We'd be happy to support smaller projects with votes or even have POSH assist with funding if others deem the use of the reward pool acceptable towards that.
The main thing that is important, in my opinion, is that the costs aren't crazy, i.e. a dev asking for ludicrious amounts (this is of course subjective but you can imagine how small the rewards pool is these days), and that the things are open-source and benefit hive as a whole, not just a small group of layer 2 token holders, etc.
Like the curation tool you mentioned here for instance, or @meno's app for short form content.
It'd also be important that through these posts the logs would be transparent and efforts made to show the costs being transparent to users we can vet are unique/real. While we understand not everything can be fully transparent, for instance when you have to pay an outside dev for something no one on hive is able to develop/create but is essential to the idea, we can't force those people to create hive accounts to receive payments.
Either way, ocd would be happy to help if our voting power allows for it and in this case I think even making exception that posts can be automated/low effort as long as the rewards are used to fund something that benefits all hive stakeholders "equally".
Thanks for your response! I hadn't even thought about big projects like OCD supporting smaller projects. But I love the idea!
True! The way I had thought about it is that projects can pitch their project via a blog in a 'Shark Tank' community. They share their plans or way of work, but don't ask for a specific amount. It is then on the supporters to decide how they support (delegation, upvotes) and how much.
All the bigger and smaller votes and delegations add up in the end, making it possible for these projects to grow.
Same goes for the #hiveproject hashtag. I think that could be an easy way to check out a stream of Hive Projects in case someone has some Voting Power left.
I hope more people will open the #hiveproject stream instead of the trending page to cast some votes.
By having an oversight of different projects, you can decide which ones you think deserve your upvote. I hope there will be a large list to choose from.
If you don't see any value in short content, don't upvote that tool.
If you've not into engagement, don't upvote comment curation projects.
It's all up to the voter itself.
In the Shark Tank community (when I will create it), I will make an introduction post that describes what needs to be in a pitch blog. And being transparent is indeed very important.
But there is also a task for the supporters to check in this.
This will be more difficult to establish with the idea of the #hiveproject hashtag.
Thanks!
I'm happy you're positive about the idea and willing to support it.
I'll have to see how things work out, but I have good hopes both can contribute to make Hive a better place!
❤️
There is a lot of room for extra funding from the author rewards pool in my opinion. I know this may not be a popular thing to say because many are driven by earning as much as possible, etc, but since it may be hard for smaller projects to receive funding from the DHF and that can be reserved for bigger ones, I think it'd be great to be able to fund them using author rewards or the various other variations as you mentioned, delegations, donations, etc. (Although with delegations to make sure it doesn't step on any curation misuse)
I'm saying this because we haven't really seen any significant growth in unique authors joining, so I understand that some stakeholders may vote on things like hbd.funder, buildawhale or poshtoken comments to allocate some author rewards towards different things - hopefully until things change where we see an influx of new users coming in. Generally I think many authors get good rewards with many in the top being overrewarded (myself included), so there's definitely room for allocating the votes to other things that may improve hive or help bring more users to it and other effects.
When there is money to be gained, unfortunately there will be abuse too.
There surely will be projects that misuse their delegations or funds. Or stop their project and walk away with the earnings.
But I think there are more projects that do care about Hive and really want to make it a better place.
I hope we can achieve that with these two ideas. I just created the Shark Tank community. I'll try to make a nice opening blog during the weekend.
And then make a plan to get both the community and the tag more known, so they get the attention of the masses 😊
It’s great to finally get funding from the DHF. $100 per day is a good start. We are hoping to ramp up to $1,000 per day.
#hiveproject could be a tag for The Shark Tank Community 😎
Both ideas can indeed be combined.
But the Hive project owners can also use the tag for their periodic update blogs.
The Shark Tank shouldn't get multiple pitches from the same project in a short timeframe I think.
But I'm still working on the idea itself. All input is welcome!
Of course! And also everyone else who wants to promote and spread the word about this community.
