Some crypto projects are special and were funded without (scammy) ICOs or VC investments, solely by the crypto community and retail investors.

The problem with ICOs and VC capital is that these early large investors often receive disproportionate benefits, such as a large discounts.

Often there is also a pre-mine for a “foundation” and the founders.

In the past, ICOs have often been misused for pump-and-dump schemes. ICO investors secure tokens at a low price and then dump them at a higher price to retail investors at launch.

When Steem forked to Hive, there was no ICO or VC capital, and Steemit Inc.'s assets were transferred to a community fund (DHF, Decentralized Hive Fund).
