Why My No's Mean More Than My Yes's

These days, I've been thinking about something that honestly hit me way harder than I expected. For the longest time, I genuinely believed that saying yes was the brave thing to do - you know, the generous choice that made me look good in front of everyone around me. But the more I sit with this whole idea, the more I'm realizing that yes is often just taking the easy way out. Think about it - it costs absolutely nothing to say yes to something you don't even care about deep down. You just nod your head, agree with a smile, move on with your day, and nobody ever questions you for it.

But saying no? That's a completely different story, and it's where things get real. Every single time I've said no to something - whether it was a so-called opportunity, someone's request, or even a relationship that wasn't truly serving my happiness - I felt the weight of that decision immediately. Because here's the thing: saying no means you might lose that person's approval and appreciation. You might lose the chance that seemed good on paper. You may even lose the security of being the nice guy who never disturbs the boat. That’s exactly why it signifies something so strong because you’re choosing to risk that loss for the sake of what you genuinely believe in or want for your life.

I used to say yes to practically anything that came up, thinking it would help keep the peace or excellent possibilities coming my way. But looking back at those times, the majority of those yeses were absolutely hollow - they didn't help me to grow in any manner that mattered and they surely didn't make me proud of the person I was becoming. The nos I’ve offered, albeit sparse, have taught me more about my own beliefs and what actually offers me gratitude than a hundred thoughtless yeses would ever have.

So today, when I say no to things, I try my best not to justify and carry that heavy feeling of guilt. It's not rejection of good things in my life - it's clarity about what matters most. And since clarity is rare enough in these days we're living, it deserves to be respected and appreciated, even by myself.

No is a complete sentence in itself and doesn’t need an explanation or justification for it. When you feel the need to say no to whoever or whatever, say it without any form of guilt. Saying yes to everything doesn’t make us good people at the end of the day.

We don’t get to decide who sees the good in us no matter what we do or how far we go for others.
