I've been mentioning Hermes Agent, and my work with it, in these posts quite a lot over the past few months (though there was a hiatus during the summer), and for good reason, because it's the most powerful, and exciting, agentic-AI framework available, and I've accomplished some quite incredible things in my time working with it, like connecting it to Hive and having it automate some of my daily 'We Are Alive Tribe' tasks. The results using Hermes depend on the particular models being used, but even with the completely-free models, I'm able to accomplish most of what I want, which is pretty badass.
For those of you who may be curious and interested in exploring Hermes Agent, and what it can do for you, and because the installation and initial setup is quite quick and easy, I thought that I'd share a few steps of how to begin your journey with Hermes and agentic AI. Step one is going to Nous Research's official Hermes Agent website, copying the one-line terminal installer snippet based on your operating system, pasting it into a terminal, and hitting 'enter'.
That command will install Hermes Agent, ready to go, on your computer. If you're using an Android phone, then the best option is to visit Hermes' Android Installation page, and especially the section about
the Termux one-line installer, which would be the best option for most people. I know that Hermes can be used on an iPhone or iPad as well, though I've had no experience with that as of yet.
Once Hermes is installed via a terminal (and with .bashrc sourced afterward), there are two commands to run to get things set up and running. The first is hermes setup, which walks you through a more-complete setup flow, and hermes model, which allows you to select your initial inference provider and AI model. Hermes can be easily set up to use either locally-run models via an assortment of inference engines, or cloud-based models. Very thankfully there is one cloud provider, OpenCode, that does not require an API key, offers free service, and that offers a rotating selection of capable models, most of which are open-source and open-weight.
As of today, the free models available via OpenCode are Deepseek-V4-Flash, Hy3, Nemotron-3.5-Lightning, Nemotron-3-Ultra, Laguna-s-2.1, and Muse-Spark-1.2-Contributor (the only closed-source, closed-weight model, by Meta). Of those, the best models for use in Hermes Agent (as the main agent at least) are Deepseek-V4-Flash, Hy3, Laguna-s-2.1, and Nemotron-3-Ultra. I use Nemotron-3-Ultra a good bit of the time, because Nvidia trains and optimizes it for use with Hermes Agent, and because it's quite a good, and fairly dependable model. Well, I hope this short explanation and walk-through inspires and motivates you to give Hermes Agent a shot, because I definitely don't believe that you'll be sorry that you did!
Yesterday, Monday, I left the Flow House, after finishing up my Hive-Blurt-'We Are Alive Tribe' tasks, by just after 3PM, focusing first on collecting some tools and going to clear around a young rare fruit tree (an Anonaceae species from Perú) planted next to the fenced garden, and behind Kana's place. I also spent a fair bit of time clearing my way through the cane-grass jungle, as I attempted to locate the borders and paths. Once I finished there for the day, I trekked back across the property to take a shower, and to take a short break up at the Flow House, before working with Ano for a while, first to cut down a larger Cecropia tree that was growing precariously closely to the Flow House, and to attempt to pull an abiu tree back up-right after being knocked perpendicular by the last hurricane. Once we finally finished those for the day, I took another shower, made myself some food, and collected my leftover superfood fire coffee from the fridge in Wabisabi, and with those in hands I headed back to the Flow House, to work with Hermes some more, and to begin my evening Hive tasks. I got through all of my notifications by just after 11PM, and after working with Hermes for one last round, I went to bed by around 11:45PM. I woke up a bit before 8AM, having slept well, going to prepare my superfood fire coffee in Wabisabi, then returning to the Flow House to write and publish my Weekly-Hive-Goals-and-Progress Update, and to write this post. It's now just before 2PM, so it's a marvelous time to wrap this up, so that I may attend to my few other important Hive-Blurt-'We Are Alive Tribe' tasks, before leaving the Flow House a little later in the afternoon, to focus first on some photography for my posts, and then on some jungle-community/land work and tasks. 2026 Life Goals
1.) Do regular integral practices again, alone or with others.
2.) Prepare regular batches of my medicinal teas collected from the land again.
3.) Make my plant nursery, and the gardens, beautiful again.
4.) Begin learning relevant coding/programming languages to more fully contribute to the sovereignty-driven technologies where I am active, like Arch Linux, Hive, Qortal, DeSo, and Bastyon.
