Time Travelling to 1985, Sadly without a DeLorean Time Machine

avatar

Today we're time traveling back to 1985, the year Marty McFly travelled in a DeLorean time machine back to 1955. Good old Back to the Future! But I won't be sharing songs from the movie... Today I thought if might be fun to share performances from an even bigger event from 1985, Live Aid.

Ethiopia had been in a severe famine crisis in the northern regions since 1983. Some was due to drought, but mostly caused by the government in charge trying to put down insurgents. The result was mass starvation causing between 300,000 to 1.2 million deaths. That is a huge discrepancy range telling us that no accurate records were actually kept. Most of the starving were very young children and their poor parents, even though there were surpluses of food around the world and even in parts of Ethiopia.

The idea to put on a huge benefit concert was first proposed by Boy George (who wasn't invited to the party), but Bob Geldof took up the initiative and got the deal put together. There were concerts in London and Philadelphia simultaneously with some of the top musical acts in the world. It is estimated that it was viewed by 40 percent of the world's population, some 1.9 billion people!

Controversy surfaced years later about where the money raised actually went. Some may have gone to the government and used to purchase guns. When there is a lack of oversight in third world nations such is to be expected. However they tried their best and raised about 150 million pounds! That is a lot of money...

Now onto Three Tune Tuesday. First off I want to say thank you to @ablaze for starting and continuing to sponsor this fun weekly event where you can share three songs that you enjoy. One lucky participant will win some HSBI units, you can't have too many of those! So if you don't already participate feel free to jump in, just use the tag #ttt or #threetunetuesday and it's never a bad idea to do a shoutout to @ablaze .

Here we go!

Dire Straits and Sting

In 1985 Dire Straits were one of the biggest bands in the world. One of their biggest hits was "Money for Nothing" which was a huge hit on the new music station MTV. If you see a show produced by MTV to this day you will hear Sting at the start of this song. The band and Sting must get nice residual checks to this day!

Back to Live Aid, this was in London and they were joined onstage by Sting himself. This is "Money for Nothing":

Eric Clapton with Phil Collins

Another great rock n' roller who got the invite to perform was Clapton. But he wasn't the only famous face in this performance, on drums you will notice Phil Collins. He had performed in London earlier, hopped on the Concorde supersonic jet in time to perform in Philadelphia the same day. Talk about dedication! At any rate, this is one of Clapton's best songs, "Layla". The fast version, not the slow one!

Judas Priest

This band was at the top of their fame back in 1985. Without doubt one of the best hard rock bands of the era which is why they got the invite to perform at the venue in Philadelphia. Even though they are British... This is a fun song but towards the end it goes to show you that when you aren't using your own equipment bad things can happen. They ended up with some feedback sound problems, but it didn't slow them down a beat. Here's "Living After Midnight":

That will wrap up this Three Tune Tuesday, I hope you enjoyed the time travel back to 1985. Now if we only had a time travelling DeLorean for real, that would be awesome! Please feel free to leave any comments or questions below and thank you for all of you support. I appreciate all of you here on Hive and am very grateful to found this wonderful place over two and a half years back. Have a great day everyone!

I actually prefer the fast version of Layla. I never realized that was Sting at the beginning of the song.

The slow version of Layla is okay, but the fast one is so much better! Sting sings that "I want my MTV" line, to this day MTV production studio uses that bit of the song at beginning of any of their productions. So every time someone streams one of the shows Sting and Dire Straits are earning residual checks. That is a serious perk of being a popular recording artist!

They really are great movies! 1985 was a big year for movies and music, even Black Sabbath performed at Live Aid. No AC/DC though which was odd since they were a huge band at the time!

The sad part about all that money raised is no one really knows where it all went. Popular artists can help raise money but the behind the scenes the accountants send out the money to who know where? You are a youngster, I was a very young teen at that point!
