Celebrating B.B. King's 100th Birthday this Three Tune Tuesday
Today I realized that it was the 100th birthday of the late, great blues performer B.B. King. He was was of the most influential electric guitarists of all time and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. He was born in Mississippi in 1925 and was drawn to music as a teen through church choirs. He soon was able to get his first guitar with the help of his employer and his career path had been chosen.
After hearing the electric guitar for the first time he knew right then that he had own one. Every guitar he owned received the name Lucille, and there's a good reason why. While performing in a club in Twist, Arkansas a fight broke out between two men causing a fire. King fled the club only to realize he left his guitar inside. So he ran into the burning building to recover it. The next day he learned that the men were fighting over a woman named Lucille. So he named his guitar the same to remind him to never run into a burning building or fight over a woman!
Thomas R Machnitzki
In 1952 he had his first big hit with "3 O'Clock Blues" and shifted his career into high gear. He had a string of hits over the next 20 years and even one in the 80's. I think the first song of his I knew well was "Stand By Me", which was popular in the 80's as it was the theme song for the movie by the same name. From there I dove into some of his older music as I got older. He was fantastic!
He was an active musician until 2014 when his health declined and passed away the following year. A true musical legend would have been 100 today!
Now for some Three Tune Tuesday. First off I want to say thank you to @ablaze for starting and continuing to sponsor this fun weekly event where you can share three songs that you enjoy. I have picked out three great tunes from King, enjoy!
"The Thrill Is Gone" from 1969 is perhaps his most famous and well known song. It's a great song, and you can really hear just how good his guitar work really was! It also won him a Grammy Award in 1970!
"3 O'Clock Blues" was his first big hit released in 1951 but charting in 1952, including five weeks at number one on the Rhythm and Blues Charts. It's a great song, have a listen:
"Sweet Little Angel" from 1956 was another big hit and reached number 8 on the Rhythm and Blues Charts. It has also been listed by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of the top 500 songs that shaped Rock and Roll. Not a bad list to be on!
That will wrap up this edition of Three Tune Tuesday. I do hope you enjoyed hearing some great blues music for the great B.B. King! Please feel free to leave any comments or questions below. As always, thank you so much for all of your support, it truly means a lot to me! Have a great day everyone!

How time flies my friend.....
More and more I'm seeing some of the greats including B.B. King pass away...
When I was a kid I thought everyone would live forever Lol😇
It's been ten years already, but we seem to be losing legends on a daily basis anymore...
Kind of sad my friend… 🙄
He was terrific. I saw him in concert once. He was my late dad's favorite!
That's awesome! I never had the chance to see him live. I did see Ray Charles once and would have loved to see B.B. King!

I didn't know he was already 100 years old. But his music is timeless. Thank you for sharing.

He was one of the true greats, and had a long career. He lived to 89, not too bad. Thanks so much for your support!

The Thrill is Gone is probably the song I know the best. He really was amazing! It's sad he couldn't have lived to see 100, but I think he probably had a full and amazing life.
He was one of the greats, but living to 100 is probably over rated. Most people at that age are in wheel chairs and their brains aren't what they used to be. If you can still get around well and your mind is sharp it would be awesome, I don't think I would be that lucky! lol
