Rooster, I’m pretty sure that song is written by Jerry Cantrell, the guitar player. It’s about his dad in the Vietnam war. I think I got that from a Guitar world magazine many years ago. 🤷‍♂️
It’s fun song to play on a dreadnought acoustic guitar.

It was all about surviving, which is what you have to do in times of war. It is a fun song though!

As far as I know my pops didn’t know Rooster, but I think my pops would have liked the song! He passed in 93 when I was a kid so never heard it as far as I know but he would have liked it!
