⚖️ First Impression

Black Mirror is a series that absolutely blows my mind. It’s brutal, uncomfortable, and brilliant. For those who are a bit older, it reminds me a lot of "The Twilight Zone"—stories that don't relate to each other but share a common soul of madness and social commentary. I thought the series ended at season 5, but to my surprise, Netflix has added more. So, I decided to start from the very beginning and review them one by one. "The National Anthem" is the introduction to this universe, and while it's not the most "sci-fi" episode, it’s definitely one of the most disturbing.

📖 Spoiler-Free Synopsis

A beloved member of the British Royal Family, Princess Susannah, is kidnapped. The kidnapper doesn't want money. He has only one demand: for the Prime Minister to perform a sexual act with a pig on live national television. If he doesn't comply by a specific deadline, the princess dies. The episode follows the political chaos, the media circus, and the ultimate moral collapse of a man forced into an impossible corner.

🎭 Analysis and Rating

While this isn't the most impactful episode for me in terms of "wow" factor, its social commentary is 10/10. It shows how the public consumes tragedy as entertainment. Two things really stood out to me. First, the tragic irony: the princess is released an hour before the deadline, but because everyone was glued to their TVs watching the "show," nobody noticed her walking free. The sacrifice was for nothing.

Second, the ending. A year later, the Prime Minister is seen as a hero by the public, but his private life is dead. His wife can't even look at him. He chose his public image and "duty" over his own dignity and family intimacy, and he paid the ultimate price at home.

The Positive:

Raw Realism: It doesn't need robots or spaceships to be terrifying.
The Ending: The contrast between the "hero" statue and the broken marriage is haunting.
Rory Kinnear’s Performance: You can truly feel his desperation and humiliation.

The Disappointing:

Pacing: Compared to later episodes, it feels a bit more like a traditional political thriller.
The "Joke" Factor: Some people might find the premise too absurd to take seriously, though that's kind of the point.

🏆 Fun Fact

The creator, Charlie Brooker, said he wanted the first episode to be "un-missable" and shocking so people would understand that Black Mirror wasn't going to be a "safe" show. Also, several years after the episode aired, a real-life (and unproven) controversy called "Piggate" involved a British Prime Minister and a pig, making this episode look like a terrifying prophecy.

A solid start that sets the tone for the rest of the series. It’s not about the technology; it’s about how technology brings out the worst in us.

⚖️ Primera Impresión

Black Mirror es una serie que me vuela la cabeza, me parece una brutalidad. Para los que tienen algunos años más, me recuerda mucho a "La Dimensión Desconocida" (The Twilight Zone), donde cada capítulo es una historia única y loca. Pensé que ya no sacarían más temporadas después de la quinta, pero al volver a Netflix vi que hay más tela que cortar. He decidido empezarla desde el principio para ir comentando cada joya en Hive. Este primer episodio es de los menos "impactantes" en cuanto a tecnología, pero de los más crudos a nivel humano.

La Princesa Susannah, un miembro muy querido de la familia real británica, es secuestrada. El secuestrador no pide dinero; su única demanda es que el Primer Ministro mantenga relaciones sexuales con un cerdo en televisión nacional y en vivo. Si no lo hace antes de una hora fijada, la princesa muere. El capítulo muestra la desesperación política y cómo la presión social obliga a un hombre a cometer el acto más humillante de su vida.

🎭 Análisis y Valoración

Lo interesante de este capítulo son dos cosas que me dejaron pensando. Primero, la ironía total: la princesa es liberada casi una hora antes de la hora fijada para matarla. Si el tipo no hubiese hecho nada, ella igual se habría salvado, pero como todo el mundo (incluyendo a la policía) estaba pegado al televisor viendo el morbo, nadie se dio cuenta de que ella ya estaba libre. El acto fue innecesario.

Segundo, el peso del "qué dirán". Un año después, el Primer Ministro es un héroe ante la gente, pero en su casa su mujer está asqueada y no le habla. Él prefirió la aprobación pública y su carrera que su propia dignidad y su familia. Al final, el público olvida, pero los que te quieren no.

Lo Rescatable:

Crítica Social: Refleja perfectamente cómo nos hemos vuelto esclavos del morbo y las pantallas.
Actuación: Rory Kinnear transmite una angustia que se siente real.
El Final: Es agridulce y muy real. No hay un final feliz de película de Hollywood.

Lo Decepcionante:

Menos impacto visual: Comparado con los mundos futuristas de otros capítulos, este se siente como un thriller político normal.
Premisa fuerte: A mucha gente le da asco el tema del animal y no logran ver el mensaje que hay detrás.

🏆 Dato Curioso

El creador Charlie Brooker quería que el primer episodio fuera tan impactante que nadie pudiera olvidarlo, para dejar claro que Black Mirror no era una serie "amigable". Años después de emitirse, surgió un rumor real (no comprobado) sobre un Primer Ministro británico real y un incidente con un cerdo en su juventud, lo que hizo que el capítulo pareciera una predicción aterradora.
