First successful germinations in my substrate (En/Fr) PoR
My attempts to develop a homemade germination substrate using recycled materials are finally starting to bear fruit.
The initial idea was to find a substitute for coconut fiber, which isn't readily available in my area, nor is flax or hemp fiber, which do grow in my climate.
Corrugated cardboard from packaging didn't work well because the resulting substrate became waterlogged too quickly and lacked drainage, despite attempts to add other ingredients.
On the other hand, cardboard from egg cartons provides a better particle size while maintaining its absorbency.
Adding crushed eggshells and coffee grounds creates my basic substrate.
The first batch, with the addition of tea bag residue to this base, yielded the best results, along with peeled pear seeds.
Growth is very rapid, and in the first photo, you can see the progress in just a few days.
The experiment will continue until the plant begins to stagnate and/or has filled the pot with roots.
I'll let you in on a secret: I intend to plant these pear trees in untended flowerbeds along my street, where plants grow freely, and that's intentional.
The second batch, this time with the addition of dried and blended dead leaves, also germinated using pear seeds, though a little later than the first, about a day.
That's the second photo.
I had to help it along a bit by gently removing the brown coating that was preventing the first leaves from opening.
I'll be able to compare these two batches: growth rate, stage of growth cessation, and plant vigor.
The third batch, to which I added woody fibers from a grated avocado pit, didn't germinate (I'm still using pear seeds). I'm giving it time, but it's possible that despite the successive rinses, there's still too much tannin, which is known to inhibit germination.
This will still be a good test, which can confirm this information about tannin, since these fibers are also very useful for structuring the substrate, which is well-aerated.
I will continue my observations and see if there is excessive or rapid degradation of the ingredients, which would cause mold or unpleasant odors.
If I obtain a stable and functional substrate, I can consider preparing it in advance and drying it for later use.

A great way to remove tannic acid is soaking and rinsing with methanol. Other alcohols my work as well. Good Luck with the ag work! I hope the pear trees bear fruit.
