Humanoid robot beats the fastest man.

The Chinese company Unitree Robotics unveiled a new humanoid robot that, according to the company, surpasses certain physical limits reached by humans. Dubbed "Superman," the new prototype was designed for highly dynamic movements and achieved a top speed of 12.66 m/s—equivalent to approximately 45.6 km/h.


For comparison, during his historic 100-meter race in 2009, Usain Bolt reached an estimated top speed of around 12.42 m/s; this means that—at least based on the figures released by Unitree—the new robot achieved a peak speed slightly higher than that of the fastest man on record. However, running was not the only test.


In a demonstration released by the company, Superman also performed a vertical jump of approximately 2 meters from a standstill—a particularly impressive height considering the robot's legs are only 85 cm long. Perhaps one of the most interesting details is the timeframe involved: according to Unitree Robotics, the prototype was developed in just over three months.

Even so, the company maintains that the robot is still under development and that there is considerable room to improve its performance in the coming months. Superman was not created—at least not at this stage—as a domestic robot or a machine intended for factory work; instead, it functions primarily as an experimental platform for studying highly dynamic humanoid movements.


The higher the speed, the harder it becomes to maintain balance; during a run, the system must continuously calculate leg positioning, ground contact, and weight distribution, correcting movement in real time to prevent the machine from simply losing control. This is an area where Unitree has made rapid progress; its previous robots had already demonstrated running, jumping, kicking, acrobatic maneuvers, and various methods of recovering balance.


The new prototype takes this pursuit of physical performance to the next level. However, the figures presented for Superman were released by Unitree itself and require careful evaluation when directly compared to human records set under controlled athletic conditions; nevertheless, the prototype demonstrates just how far engineers are managing to push the locomotion capabilities of these machines. After years of trying to get humanoid robots to simply walk reliably, some of these machines are now beginning to explore a completely different frontier: movements that surpass the physical capabilities of the human body itself.
