Islam teaches us to purify the heart first, but it also teaches us to reflect that purity in our character and appearance. God-consciousness is in the heart, modesty is in the gaze and dress, and good manners are in our dealings. We can’t say “my heart is clean” and then do what Islam has forbidden. A clean intention should lead to clean actions, because people learn deen from what they see too. One without the other is incomplete, and Allah judges both our intention and our actions.
