The Power of Kindness: How One Woman Changed My View of People and Culture

Last year was a change in my life, as well as that of my family.

We were given a quit notice on the basis of renovation and many more reasons. Immediately, my family and I decided to leave our previous house of residence and move into our own house.

At our new home, things were a bit hard. We had no water, no net (mosquito net/internet), and many more things were lacking.

Mummy Hallelujah, as we often called her, usually encouraged us. She gave us a generator to use for free. She sometimes cooked for us during laborious jobs.

Over time, our new home started to take shape. She not only stopped there; she allowed us to pump water using her pumping machine since we didn't have ours. She even gave us a water hose, a whiteboard, a net, and many more things.

She was indeed an epitome of blessings for me. I would not trade her kind gestures for bad intentions.

Now we live comfortably in our house, but her help shows that good people exist in this world.

Mummy Hallelujah is a kind, simple woman who is also a widow.

A few months ago, her grandfather went to the great beyond. Her little daughter came to me during this process. I petted her and assisted where I could. I tried my best to be of help, using my knowledge of cadaveric anatomy to slow necrotic decay. I also assisted in tutoring her daughter until she passed her papers.

Today, I replicated that act of kindness towards assisting a new neighbor. However, I didn't even know that the new neighbor was related to her.

Today, I see life not as a give-and-take situation, but a situation where one needs to continually replicate goodness to everyone, irrespective of who they are.

Truthfully, I had the mindset that Akwa Ibom tribes are not nice. But through her, I have grown to like the delicacies from her tribe. I have also grown to love their characters. I now have the people of Akwa Ibom as friends.

She taught me how to greet in Akwa Ibom: "Nsoso ooo." I have also learned to be social and always interact. This was when she noticed that I liked to be isolated.

In general, her kindness shed light on my own belief that all humans are after their own gain and that kindness does not exist. It also cleared my stereotypical view of the Akwa Ibom tribe of Nigeria. It made me learn about Akwa Ibom culture and more.

Huhm...
I love this. And I'm glad that you remain grateful to her. You even helped someone who was related to her. That's huge. What if she didn't show you kindness then, only God knows what...

Thanks for sharing. Thanks for being kind.
