Estudiar.
Cambiar de trabajo.
Aprender algo completamente nuevo.
"¿No será demasiado tarde?"
"¿Y si no me sale bien?"
"Voy a intentarlo."

What I Learned Too Late #14
About the Fear of Starting Over Later in Life

I learned too late that starting over does not always mean starting from zero. Sometimes it means starting with everything you have already learned.
Hello dear Holos & Lotus community,
For a long time, I believed that there was a proper age for certain things.
Studying.
Changing careers.
Learning something completely new.
Starting a project.
Discovering a new skill.
Even allowing yourself to dream about something different.
It seemed that everything had its own moment and that, once that moment had passed, we simply had to accept the life we had already built.
When you are young, starting over seems easier.
You have time.
You have energy.
You feel that you can make mistakes several times and still have opportunities to change direction.
But when you reach a certain age, other questions begin to appear.
"Why should I start now?"
"Isn't it too late?"
"What if it doesn't work?"
"Is it really worth learning something new at this age?"
I have asked myself some of those questions too.
When we believe life has already been written
I think one of the things that limits us most as we grow older is believing that our lives are already defined.
As if at 40, 50, or 60, all we can do is continue along the path we already know.
But life does not work like a notebook where, once a page has been written, we can never begin another one.
Sometimes one stage ends without us even noticing.
Children grow up.
Responsibilities change.
Our bodies change.
Our priorities change too.
And one day we find ourselves facing a version of ourselves that has more experience, but perhaps also some dreams that were put away somewhere.
Some dreams do not disappear. They simply wait for us to find the courage to look at them again.
I have had to start over more than once.
Perhaps I did not call it that at the time.
When my daughter was born, I decided to dedicate myself to caring for her and stopped working as I had before.
Later, I found other ways to contribute.
Sewing.
Handmade crafts.
Sweets.
Different recipes.
Small things that I learned and developed from home.
I never thought of that as reinventing myself.
It was simply what life needed from me at that moment.
Today, looking back, I understand that each of those stages was also a way of beginning again.
Fear does not always mean we cannot do something
Over the years, I have understood that being afraid before starting something new does not mean we are incapable.
It means we do not know the outcome yet.
And that can be frightening at any age.
The difference is that when we are younger, we often think:
"I will try."
As we grow older, we may think:
"What if I waste my time?"
Perhaps because we begin to value our time differently.
We no longer want to waste it.
But we also learn something we did not know before:
Time is not only wasted when something does not work.
It can also be wasted by never doing what we truly wanted to try.
Sometimes we are so afraid of making a mistake that we make a quieter mistake instead: never trying.
Not starting from zero
I think this is the part I most wish I had understood earlier.
When we start something at a certain age, we do not start from zero.
We start with everything we have lived through.
With our mistakes.
Our disappointments.
The skills we have learned.
The people we have met.
The ability to recognize what we no longer want.
And also a clearer idea of what we do want.
A 50-year-old woman learning something new is not the same woman she would have been at 20.
But that does not mean she is at a disadvantage.
Perhaps she has something she did not have at 20:
Knowledge of herself.
What I learned too late
I do not believe age is some magical number that makes difficulties disappear.
At 51, I know there are things that require more effort than they did when I was younger.
I also know that time has a different value now.
But that does not mean my life has finished being written.
I can still learn.
I can still make mistakes.
I can still discover something I did not know I would enjoy.
I can still start a project.
I can still change a habit.
I can still say, "I have never done this before, but I want to try."
And perhaps that is one of the freedoms that comes with age.
No longer needing everyone to understand our decisions.
Age cannot give me back the years I have already lived, but it cannot take away the years I still have ahead of me.
Today I think starting over does not always have to be something big.
Sometimes it can be as simple as learning a skill that has always interested us.
Returning to a hobby.
Making something with our own hands.
Meeting new people.
Studying.
Starting a small project.
Or simply allowing ourselves to imagine a life different from the one we originally planned.
Because perhaps it is never too late to become a new version of ourselves.
I learned too late that I do not have to become young again to start something new.
I only need to remember that I am still alive, I can still learn, and there are still paths I have not walked.
