The Last Empty Chair at the Dining Table

There is a chair at my dining table that is almost always empty.

It is not that nobody can sit there.

It simply happens that, during our everyday meals, we usually occupy the other chairs first.

That one remains there, quietly waiting.

Sometimes I put my bag on it.

Other times I leave a piece of clothing there for a while.

It becomes the place where something is left because, after all, "nobody is sitting there."

I suppose every home has a chair like that.

A chair that seems to have no owner.

But sometimes, when I look at it, I realize that an empty chair is never completely empty.

It can carry memories.

It can remind us of someone who used to sit there.

Someone who shared meals, conversations, laughter, worries, and ordinary afternoons with us.

There are absences that become especially visible around a table.

Perhaps because eating together is such an intimate act.

We sit down.

We serve the food.

We ask how everyone's day went.

Someone tells a story.

Someone complains about something.

Someone laughs.

And when one person is no longer there, we notice the difference.

Sometimes we leave the chair empty without even deciding to.

Other times, we fill it with a bag or a jacket, perhaps because it is easier to see an object there than to see the space itself.

I have wondered whether we sometimes do the same thing with the empty spaces inside our lives.

We fill them quickly.

With activities.

With obligations.

With noise.

With things that keep us from noticing what is missing.

Perhaps because silence makes us think.

And thinking about certain absences can hurt.

But I have also learned that not every empty space needs to be filled immediately.

Some spaces simply need to remain open.

An empty chair can be a place for someone who has gone away and may one day return.

It can be a place for a daughter who now has her own life but comes home to visit.

It can be a place for a friend who suddenly appears at the door.

It can even be a place for someone we have not met yet.

Life is strange that way.

We sometimes believe that what is empty represents something lost.

But an empty space can also represent possibility.

A beginning that has not happened yet.

A conversation still waiting to take place.

A person who has not yet crossed our path.

Perhaps that is why I have stopped feeling the need to fill that last chair all the time.

There is something comforting about knowing that there is still room.

Room for a visit.

Room for a reunion.

Room for laughter.

Room for someone to sit down and say, "How have you been?"

And perhaps, above all, room for hope.

Because the home is not only made of the people who are inside it today.

It is also made of the memories of those who were here yesterday and the possibility of those who may arrive tomorrow.

So when I see that empty chair, I no longer see only absence.

I see a place that has been kept open.

Perhaps that is what an empty chair really means.

Not that someone is missing forever, but that the story around the table is not finished yet.

Maybe that is why I like leaving one chair free.

Because as long as there is a place at the table, there is always room for someone to return, for someone new to arrive, or simply for us to remember that our story is still being written.
