With You and the Rain | Nattosheru Review [ENG/SPA]

This isn't the first or last time I'll talk about Slice of Life, so those of you who read me regularly will know what kind of stories we can find here. Unlike most popular or generic anime, Slice of Life stands out for being calm, different, and unique in style. This time, I think I've come across one of the most peaceful and relaxing anime you can find in this genre. Even so, its plot caught my attention because of a few particular details.

Of course, it's not an anime for everyone, as many prefer action anime full of drama, romance, and the like. But if you're someone who's looking for something different and sometimes something that relaxes you a little from all the audiovisual garbage that's on the internet today, then this anime might be perfect for you. With You and the Rain revolves around the daily life of our young Fuji, a lonely writer who loves living alone in her apartment as much as she loves rainy days.

No es la primera ni la última vez que les hablaré de un Slice of Life, así que los que me leen seguido sabrán qué tipo de historias nos podemos encontrar aquí. A diferencia de la mayoría de animes populares o genéricos que hay, los Slice of Life se destacan por ser tranquilos, diferentes y únicos en su estilo. En esta ocasión creo que me he topado con uno de los animes más tranquilos y relajantes que se pueden llegar a encontrar en este género. Aún así, su trama me llamó un tanto la atención por uno que otro detalle en particular.

Claro, no es un anime para todo el mundo ya que muchos prefieren animes de acción repletos de drama, romance y cosas por el estilo. Pero si en cambio eres de los que buscan ver algo diferente y a veces algo que te relaje un poco de tanta basura audiovisual que hay al día de hoy en internet, entonces este anime puede ser perfecto para tí. With You and the Rain gira en torno a la vida diaria de nuestra joven Fuji, una escritora solitaria que ama vivir sola en su apartamento tanto como le gustan los días lluviosos.

After encountering the strange "dog" she saw in a box on one of those days they like, Fuji decides to take it home with her. Upon entering, our furry tanuki is impressed by how her apartment looks inside. The girl still wonders what breed You (as she calls her "dog") is, but in the end decides that he is a mixed breed. With this premise, many will surely expect to see a story full of funny and unusual moments with our furry and strange dog. That may be what you find if you decide to watch this anime, but don't get your hopes up too high.

When I repeatedly told you at the beginning that this is a quiet anime, I wasn't just saying it for the sake of saying it. To begin with, with the appearance and introduction of the protagonist, Fuji, we already have a clear idea of what the rest of the anime will be like. This is because Fuji is a quiet girl who doesn't like to go out much, go to parties, or hang out with friends—none of that. What she likes most is to be locked up alone in her apartment reading a book or writing. Oh, of course, there's also her love for rainy days.

Luego de toparse con el extraño “perro” que vió en una caja en un día de esos que les gustan, Fuji decide llevárselo a su casa. Al entrar, nuestro peludo tanuki queda impresionado por cómo se ve su apartamento por dentro. La chica aún se sigue preguntando de qué raza es You (así llama a su “perro”), pero al final decide que es mestizo. Con dicha premisa seguramente muchos esperan ver una historia repleta de momentos graciosos y a la vez fuera de lo común con nuestro peludo y extraño perro. Puede que eso sea lo que lleguen a encontrarse si deciden ver este anime, pero tampoco se ilusionen mucho.

Cuando les dije repetidas veces al principio que este es un anime tranquilo no lo dije solamente por decir nomás. Para empezar, ya con la aparición y presentación que nos hacen de la protagonista, Fuji, tenemos una idea bien clara de cómo será el resto del anime. Esto se debe a que Fuji es una chica tranquila, que no le gusta salir mucho ni ir de fiestas ni salir con amigas, nada de eso. Lo que más le gusta es estar encerrada sola en su apartamento leyendo un libro o escribiendo. Ah, claro, también está su amor por los días lluviosos.

With a protagonist like Fuji, it's clear that we won't see many of the typical scenes commonly found in a Seinen anime like this one. You know, like the usual dates, parties, gatherings, the money episode, and all that. Instead, what we'll see in this anime is a unique and beautiful relationship between a young writer and a tanuki who pretends to be a mongrel dog. I think You (the tanuki, yes) is something unusual that definitely catches your attention when watching this anime. Not only because of his appearance, but also because of his personality.

Because yes, for a simple animal (whatever he may be in the end), he is very intelligent and intuitive. I don't know how true this really is, as I've never seen or dealt with a tanuki in my life, but it's absurd to see one writing and even having serious conversations with a human being. Yes, it's just as I've explained. Our furry You not only constantly pretends to be a mongrel dog throughout the anime, but also has conversations that are somewhat complex for an animal of his kind.

Con una protagonista como Fuji está claro que no veremos muchas escenas movidas que comúnmente uno ve en un anime Seinen como este. Ya saben, como las típicas citas, fiestas, reuniones, el episodio de la plata y todo eso. En cambio, lo que veremos en este anime es una relación única y a la vez hermosa entre una joven escritora y un tanuki que se hace pasar por un perro mestizo. Creo que lo de You (el tanuki, si) es algo inusual que definitivamente llama la atención al ver este anime. No solo por su apariencia, sino también por su personalidad.

Porque sí, para ser un simple animal (sea lo que sea al final) es muy inteligente e intuitivo. No sé qué tan cierto sea esto en realidad ya que nunca he visto ni menos he tratado con un tanuki en mi vida, pero es absurdo ver a uno escribiendo y teniendo hasta conversaciones serias con un ser humano. Si, es tal cual como te lo acabo de explicar. Nuestro peludo You no solo se hace pasar constantemente por un perro mestizo a lo largo del anime, sino que también tiene conversaciones un tanto complejas para un animal de su tipo.

And it's funny, this whole thing about You and his true nature in the anime, since we constantly see him bumping into other people and even other animals that are dogs, for example. But anyway, this is the kind of humour this anime uses, which is actually quite enjoyable for passing the time. There isn't a single episode that won't make you laugh or cheer you up with You's antics and the quirks of his lonely owner. And of course, there are also the supporting characters who complement all of this.

From Fuji's parents to his sweet and intelligent little neighbour, each character has their own unique traits that make you want to get to know them more and more. Unfortunately, we don't see much character development in any of them, but to be honest, it's not really necessary. As I said before, this is a Slice of Life anime, so at most we see a little development in the main character and little else. Each episode of this anime is a sequence of calm, funny and interesting moments.

Y es gracioso todo este tema de You y su verdadera naturaleza en el anime ya que constantemente lo vemos toparse con otras personas y hasta con otros animales que sí son perros, por ejemplo. Pero bueno, este es el tipo de humor que maneja este anime, lo cual para pasar el rato nomás es bastante agradable, la verdad. No hay un solo episodio que no te haga reír o contentar con las ocurrencias de You y las peculiaridades de su solitaria dueña. Y cómo no iba a faltar también esos personajes secundarios que complementan todo esto.

Desde los padres de Fuji hasta la tierna e inteligente vecina pequeña que tiene, cada personaje tiene su particularidad que te hace querer conocerlos más y más. Lamentablemente, no vemos mucho desarrollo de personaje en ninguno de ellos, pero tampoco hacen tanta falta, la verdad. Como dije ya antes, esto es un Slice of Life, así que como mucho podemos ver un pequeño desarrollo en cuanto a la protagonista y poco más. Cada episodio de este anime es una secuencia de momentos tranquilos, graciosos y a la vez interesantes de ver.

Last but not least, let's talk about another detail that really caught my attention in this anime: its audiovisual aspect. I've already mentioned the peculiar uniqueness that exists between Slice of Life and good animated adaptations. Most anime of this type have very good audiovisual quality, enough to take them into account. In the case of With You and the Rain, we find a fairly good level for an anime about a lonely writer and her strange dog.

From its excellent character designs and well-defined art style and drawings to its cool yet varied colour palette. We also find good visual quality, well-drawn shots and a fluidity that does not disappoint at all. The sound effects are also not bad, especially in moments of silence where you can hear the relaxing sound of rain. Let's not forget the soundtrack, which is also very pleasant to the ear. Anyway, here's another different anime for you to watch if you feel like it.

Personally, I give it a rating of 8/10 in terms of the Slice of Life genre.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos de otro detalle que me llamó mucho la atención en este anime: su apartado audiovisual. Ya les he dicho antes sobre la peculiar singularidad que hay entre el Slice of Life y las buenas adaptaciones animadas. La mayoría de animes de este tipo poseen una muy buena calidad audiovisual, tanto como para tomarlas en cuenta. En el caso de With You and the Rain podemos encontrarnos con un nivel bastante bueno para ser un anime de una escritora solitaria y su extraño perro.

Desde sus excelentes diseños de personajes y su estilo de arte y dibujos bien definidos hasta su paleta fría y a la vez variada de colores. También nos podemos encontrar con una buena calidad visual, planos bien dibujados y una fluidez que no decepciona para nada. Sus efectos de sonido tampoco están mal, sobre todo en momentos de silencio donde se puede escuchar el relajante sonido de la lluvia. Tampoco hay que olvidarse de su banda sonora, la cual también es muy agradable al oído. En fin, aquí les dejo otro anime diferente por si les apetece verlo.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8/10 en lo que respecta al género Slice of Life.
