Top 7 Fantasy Animes of the Winter Season (2026) | Nattosheru Review [ENG/SPA]

Hello, anime fans. It’s already April, and the winter season has come to an end, which means it’s time to bring you my “famousTops featuring the best anime I’ve watched so far this year. As usual, I’ll start by talking about one of the most popular and overused genres in this industry: fantasy. And, unsurprisingly, this year kicked off with a bang when it comes to this genre. So much so that, as you can see, I managed to put together a pretty decent and interesting Top 7 Fantasy Animes.

Once again, as you probably know by now, I create these TOPs mainly to have a general reference of what I consider to be the best anime in each genre and season. The list you’ll see below is ranked from 1 to 10, starting with the lowest-rated and ending with the highest-rated. Also, remember that everything you’ll read here is purely my personal opinion. Since it’s such a popular genre, it’s hard to find a fantasy anime worth watching, so I hope this Top serves as a guide for some of you to help decide what to watch.

Jack-of-All-Trades, Party of None

Let’s start with a generic fantasy anime—the kind that airs every season. Out of the several that have aired recently, I decided to choose this one because it entertained me the most, despite its generic nature and extremely low budget. It’s the typical fantasy anime whose Japanese title starts with “Yūsha Party”—and there are plenty of them. Based on the light novel series of the same name written by Itsuki Togami and illustrated by Yugi Kisaragi, this anime adaptation was produced by Animation Studio42.

The anime tells the story of Orhun Dura, who is a member of the famous hero group as the team’s sorcerer. His role involves many responsibilities, including protecting and empowering the team during their dungeon raids in the city. However, his old childhood friend and the group’s leader tells Orhun that he will be expelled and replaced by a more skilled sorcerer. Thus, he is labeled a “jack of all trades, master of none”, and begins his journey as a lone adventurer.

As you’ve seen, it’s the typical story of the adventurous protagonist who gets kicked out of the typical hero’s group because they think he’s useless and blah, blah, blah. If I had a dollar for every fantasy anime that starts with this exact plot, I’d have enough money to buy a laptop—no exaggeration. Honestly, I don’t understand why they waste money producing such generic works. Maybe it’s because they’re easy to follow or because there’s such high demand for them—I don’t know. As for the plot itself, I don’t have much to say since, as I said, it’s the same old thing.

The characters are also extremely generic, starting with the protagonist who’s supposedly weak at first but ends up being almost invincible by the end. The typical group of heroes, all proud and confident, the typical enemies, and the rest of the generic supporting characters. On the other hand, the action scenes are entertaining to watch, even though they rely heavily on 3D animation. The mix of humor with action and drama is fine, though they often go a bit overboard with the suggestive jokes. Still, there isn’t much Fanservice, which is good.

Personally, I give it a 7/10 rating as far as the fantasy genre goes.

Champignon Witch

Let’s move on to another fantasy anime, this time a bit different in that it’s a unique blend of romance, drama, and comedy. It’s an anime that piqued my interest at first, but ended up disappointing me in the end. Based on the manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Tachibana Higuchi, this animated adaptation was produced by Typhoon Graphics. The anime tells the story of Luna, a witch who lives deep in the forest, in a house made of mushrooms with talking animals. She is shunned by others because of people’s comments that she is supposedly dangerous.

At first, I was drawn to its somewhat dramatic yet romantic plot due to everything that happens to Luna and so on. But then the plot shifted into something else that didn’t quite convince me in the end. I’m not saying it’s bad or not worth watching—it’s just a personal issue I have with the work itself. Ultimately, it has both a story and some fairly decent and interesting characters, you could say. The anime explores various profound themes such as the search for identity, how we perceive others, and prejudice.

If I'm not mistaken, this anime ends up being a Slice of Life series with fantasy and a bit of romance thrown in. I'm not saying it has a great story—far from it—but it all depends on your personal taste. Personally, I have to say that, visually, I didn't really like it. It also didn’t help that some of the secondary characters were a bit irritating and annoying, to be honest. Most episodes revolve around seemingly ordinary moments, but with unusual and somewhat eccentric people. If you ask me how on earth I managed to finish watching it, I honestly wouldn’t know what to tell you.

The animation is terrible, aside from the character design, which is the only decent thing about it. The lack of fluidity, the static shots, and the poor motion effects ruined the visual experience for me. The color palette is somewhat cheerful and varied, but that’s about it. The only good thing about it is the soundtrack, thanks to its rhythm and melodies composed mostly of choral parts. But other than that, I can’t find anything that makes this anime worth watching. Ultimately, it’s just my opinion, and you might like the story—though I can’t guarantee anything in advance.

Personally, I give it a 7.5/10 rating in terms of fantasy.

Kunon the Sorcerer Can See

Let’s now talk about another fantasy anime with a magical theme and a protagonist who’s a bit quirky and different from what’s typical these days. Here, things are actually getting a little better, as I’d like to highlight a series that caught my attention from the start because of its melodramatic premise—and how it has since evolved into something more comedic and entertaining to watch. Based on the light novel series of the same name written by Unikaze Minamino and illustrated by Laruha, this anime adaptation was produced by Platinum Vision. The anime tells the story of Kunon Gurion, a young man born with the “hero’s scar”.

This is a kind of curse that all the hero’s descendants inherit, which disables a part of their body—in Kunon’s case, his eyes. Unable to see anything, his life is gray and dark, devoid of purpose or dreams. However, one day he discovers magic and realizes he can create magical eyes using that ability. This is how Kunon studies and strives to fulfill his dream of finally being able to see. To be honest, the main premise really drew me in, as it’s quite different from what you usually see in fantasy anime with generic protagonists and stories.

Here’s the trailer for the anime:

Source: Crunchyroll.

However, that’s not the case with Kunon, as we’re introduced to a charismatic protagonist whose backstory makes it easy to warm up to him pretty quickly. It starts off a bit gloomy and dramatic, but the anime quickly evolves into a mix of humor, magic, and nonstop fun moments. While it has the typical clichés of any fantasy anime, the plot focuses more on Kunon’s life and how he manages to fulfill his dreams and enjoy magic to the fullest. It has almost no action or drama to make it worth watching. But it does become very entertaining if you’re just looking for something lighthearted.

There are certain aspects of the protagonist I don’t quite like, especially how he ends up changing by the end, but it’s nothing major. The animation isn’t the best either, and I don’t think it’s any better than the previous two anime on this list. Still, it’s good enough that I don’t end up disliking it entirely, and it doesn’t rely heavily on 3D animation (or CGI), which is the case with many other similar, low-budget anime. It’s surreal that an anime about a blind wizard ranks higher than the typical hero’s journey story, but oh well.

Personally, I give it a rating of 8/10 as far as the fantasy genre is concerned.

Easygoing Territory Defense by the Optimistic Lord: Production Magic Turns a Nameless Village into the Strongest Fortified City

Let’s talk now about an Isekai anime—one of the few that aired this winter season and ended up being among the best I’ve seen. Despite how generic it is, it has a premise that’s very different from what we usually see in most fantasy anime. Based on the light novel series of the same name written by Sou Akaike and illustrated by Kururi, this anime adaptation was produced by NAZ studio. The anime tells the story of the young Van Ney Fertio, the youngest son of Marquis Jalpa, who has been recognized as a genius since childhood.

However, in a medieval fantasy world where elemental powers are valued more than any other ability, our protagonist is granted the ability of creation, which, according to his own father, is useless. That is why he decides to banish him to a remote village in the kingdom, where he will live out the rest of his life as Lord of those lands alongside his subordinates. Well, I think the anime’s title alone is more than enough to give you an idea of what the show is about. Honestly, one of the things I don’t see the point of—and that’s very common in generic fantasy anime—is their ridiculously long titles.

Here’s the trailer for the anime:

Source: Crunchyroll.

But aside from that, I think this anime’s premise is interesting because of how different it is. We see the protagonist, who is underestimated for lacking elemental abilities, being exiled and now tasked with turning a village into a fortified city. The way the story unfolds is somewhat fascinating and entertaining to watch. Clearly, we shouldn’t forget how absurd it gets at times, but I think that’s part of the anime’s humor. Otherwise, it’s fair to say that the anime maintains a certain logic in its plot.

Its characters, at least the main ones, are well-developed, setting aside all the absurdity and comedy. It doesn’t have many action scenes, but the few it does have manage to raise the excitement to an acceptable level. If you’re looking for something different from the typical Isekai, you can check out this anime. Its animation quality isn’t the best by any means, but it manages to be as decent and noteworthy as possible within its own genre. The visual effects are very good, as are the color palette and some of the character designs. It has fanservice, yes, but at least it’s limited to just one character.

Personally, I give it a rating of 8.5/10 as far as the fantasy genre is concerned.

An Adventurer's Daily Grind at Age 29

Let’s talk now about a fantasy anime that is definitely not what it seems at first glance. It’s the story of an adventurer worthy of praise and admiration—something you don’t see very often these days amid so many generic anime. It’s one of those anime I expected to be just another run-of-the-mill show, but it ended up surprising me in the end. Based on the manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Ippei Nara, this anime adaptation was produced by the HORNETS studio. The anime follows the daily life of Hajime Shinonome, a 29-year-old adventurer living in the village of Komai.

One day, in the city dungeon, our protagonist encounters a small slime trying to eat a little blonde girl. Hajime saves her, and she thanks him. She introduces herself as Rirui and expresses her desire to become an adventurer so she won’t have to depend on anyone. At first, the anime gave me the impression of being somewhat suggestive and romantically unsettling. But nothing could be further from the truth, because while we see our protagonist adopt little Rirui, the plot focuses more on the two of them trying to live together, amidst all the problems and challenges they face.

Here’s the trailer for the anime:

Source: Crunchyroll.

The anime strikes the perfect balance between adventure, action, and comedy—enough to entertain anyone. Plus, the main characters are well-developed, and their backstories make you want to learn more about them. The show’s humor can be a bit suggestive at times, but most of the time it’s more innocent and lighthearted. The action scenes aren’t bad at all, even though they might not seem like much at first. The episodes mostly focus on random moments from the characters’ daily lives in this village, where they have to complete missions and protect the villagers.

While it does follow a story as such, most moments are random and don’t place much emphasis on the passage of time from one episode to the next. The animation is decent, with the character designs being somewhat pleasant and not at all over-the-top. At first, it doesn’t seem to have the best animation in the world, but in a certain episode or two, it really stands out with excellent animation style and visual effects. But even with all this, the anime doesn’t stand out much from its predecessors due to its somewhat scattered plot and the common clichés found in every fantasy anime. It’s not an anime I’d recommend watching, but I’m not saying it’s not worth watching either.

Personally, I give it a rating of 8.5/10 as far as the fantasy genre is concerned.

Roll Over and Die: I Will Fight for an Ordinary Life with My Love and Cursed Sword!

Now let’s move on to the second-to-last anime on the list, one that surprised me from its very first episode with its dark and bloody plot. It’s a perfect blend of dark fantasy, gore, drama, mystery, and unparalleled action that works exceptionally well today. Based on the light novel series of the same name written by Kiki and illustrated by Kinta, this anime adaptation was produced by studio A.C.G.T. The anime tells the story of Flum Apricot, a former member of the famous Hero Group who was sold into slavery and managed to survive a horrific death thanks to her strange ability.

This is one of the few good things the fantasy genre has to offer in the anime industry: dark fantasy. The vast variety of fantasy works paves the way for stories with dark, grotesque, and bloody elements that, personally, fascinate me quite a bit. Tragic stories, betrayals, revenge, dystopian worlds shrouded in lies, and beings straight out of the underworld. This anime, which I’m featuring in this Top spot, has all of this and more. Personally, I was surprised to see all of this in an anime that started out as ordinary as any other story about the typical protagonist being expelled from the group and so on.

Below, I’ll share the anime’s trailer:

Source: Crunchyroll.

But when I saw the plot getting darker and darker, I was shocked and decided to watch it until the very end. Despite its interesting premise, I have to warn you that it also has its share of the typical tropes and clichés found in any other fantasy anime. Some aren’t as significant as others, but they’re still there and cause a bit of disappointment. Especially the ending, which, honestly, didn’t quite convince me at all. I don’t know, given the dark tone it has from the start, I expected more deaths, more tragedies, and things like that, but I guess that’s just my personal opinion.

Another detail worth mentioning is the romance aspect—or well, I’m not sure if I should even call what Flum and Milkit have “romance”. Mind you, I don’t dislike Yuri by any means, but it’s true that the anime has some pretty cloying moments for what it is. But hey, I repeat, I’m not complaining about this, honestly. The plot and characters are well-developed, up to what one would expect from a work like this. The animation, on the other hand, isn’t the best in the world, but it manages to maintain its quality and detail above the rest. Especially with its dark, bloody, and uncensored style.

Personally, I give it a rating of 8.9/10 as far as the fantasy genre is concerned.

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (Season 2)

We wrap up this Top list with the best of the season, the best of the fantasy genre, the pinnacle of modern animation, and one of the greatest fantasy works in all of history—without any exaggeration. An anime I’ve wanted to talk about for a long time because it was so fantastic to watch over and over again. Its long-awaited return with its second season at the start of this year was the best. Based on the manga series of the same name written by Kanehito Yamada and illustrated by Tsukasa Abe, Frieren is produced by the famous Madhouse studio.

The second season covers part of the journey undertaken by our protagonists (Frieren, Fern, and Stark) through the lands of the Northern Highlands. The goal of this journey is to reach the lands where the Demon King once dwelled and thus encounter the Spirit Realm. However, their journey will be anything but easy, and certainly not short or brief for the young people accompanying the ancient elf, Frieren. No other anime boasts such spectacular audiovisual, narrative, and historical quality as this gem we have here. Maybe I’m exaggerating a bit, but I don’t care because that’s exactly how I feel and what I think.

Below, I’ll share the trailer for the anime’s second season:

Source: Crunchyroll.

Despite having only 10 episodes—compared to the 28 episodes in its first season—this second season has it all: action, adventure, drama, comedy, romance, and more. The way Madhouse manages to tell us a part of the story that follows the famous tale of the hero who saved the world is fantastic. Not only because of how it blends memories of the past with present moments and experiences during their journey, but also because of how our protagonists learn from every lesson they encounter along the way. While it has its quiet, funny, and somewhat innocent moments, this doesn’t detract from the overall quality of the series.

In fact, it is precisely this balance—the anime’s ability to show us a funny moment and then tell us a short story about a dwarf who has spent decades building a bridge so precious to him—that makes it a perfect anime. Not only because of how one element transcends into the other, but also because these experiences leave us with valuable lessons about life, the passage of time, and the importance of leaving something behind. While its strengths lie in both its narrative and its story, the anime doesn’t fall short with its spectacular animation either. Here, we do see an impressive leap forward compared to previous anime. Each episode is simply an audiovisual marvel, plain and simple.

Personally, I give it a well-deserved 10/10 rating when it comes to the fantasy genre.

I'm glad you liked it. Personally, I'd recommend watching the last one, Frieren, which is the best on the list.

Great, I can write some comments about those animes here, saves me a hassle of forming full article :o)

Jack-of-All-Trades:
I expected typical "growth" story, which normally start quite entertaining, but have a problem of end-game, so the protagonists end up exchanging planet-shattering nukes in fights vs ancient dragons, demon lords or deities. But I thought at least first season would be ok. The big disappointment happened when he soloed a raid boss with no prior preparation, all not too long after he (involuntarily) ended his career as a support mage. As if he was all-powerful all along. That meant the story can no longer go the growth route, at least not with him growing. At least his pupils can, so there was still a chance. The season ended with an episode that opened door to mystery from the past, so I'm going to watch second one once it shows up, but I can't truly recommend that anime.

Champignon Witch:
I have no idea why I stopped watching it, maybe the pace was to slow? I liked the idea behind it and the first episodes were quite ok. Considering how much I have in the backlog, I'm pretty sure I won't be returning to that anime though.

Kunon:
I like the protagonist, how his newly acquired magic turned gloomy kid into funny, clever and curious young man. I can't wait to learn the story behind his visions of "spirit beings" accompanying various characters, and also if his eagerness to learn how to be a gentleman is finally recognized instead of being taken as womanizing. Waiting for second season.

Easygoing Territory Defense:
Oh the typical - a genius child loved by everyone, except he's granted a trait he has no influence over that is less desirable for a noble? Die here and now! :o)
"Territory building" is one of my favorite type of story, because despite protagonist being extremely overpowered from the very beginning, it still takes time, ingenuity and effort to build upon that foundation. I knew that particular one from the manga. Anime skims over many details, but as a result, the pace is a bit better and it highlights comedic factors a lot more. Too bad the anime covered everything that was in the manga, so now I have to wait to learn more of the story.

Daily Grind:
An unexpected jewel of winter season. For me the star of the show is not Hajime, but Rirui. She is so adorable in her attempts to show usefulness, despite full realization of her inadequacies. On top of that she still is just a good kid doing kiddy things, gathering first experiences and interactions, including with other kids from the village. Hajime is also interesting, showing that even as he is not really suitable to be a husband due to how he treats women, he found himself properly taking the duties of a patient father. There is a lot of warmth in the story. And the guest appearance of Yor Forger voice actress as Sekihime (medusa) was also a great bonus. Overall recommended and I want more!

Roll Over and Die:
I generally like the "underdog climbing up" stories, a bit similar to "growth", but from lower level, so usually they last longer. I have mixed feelings about that particular one. The bad guys are so explicitly bad that it is almost comical and I feel nothing when they get what they deserve. The animation leaves a lot to desire for such a dark story - while comedic animes can be excused with a lot of animation shortcuts (some even actively exploit it for comedic effect, like "Azumanga Daioh"), dark ones need to really use visuals to set up the mood and CGI rolling eyeballs won't cut it. Not to mention that constant:

  • Milkit
  • My Lady
  • Milkit
  • My Lady

is just LOL. But the story ended half way, so I'll most likely at least look at some episodes of second season if it comes out.

Frieren:
Unbelievable, I know, but I have not watched it. Not even the first season. When I first encountered Frieren in manga form, I was already reading other story with the elf wandering through the world. There was that relatively short fragment of the story: a girl that the elf met, and I grew fond of her, she just died - not from some sudden disease, not during epic battle, but from old age. It was just a short stop on the path of an elf, but her whole life has passed, just like that. It was so heartbreaking I still get teary when I think about it. So when I read a bit of Frieren, I noticed that it might be that kind of story - no, not again. So I didn't read it and later didn't watch the anime either. Since then I've seen countless references to it though, so I decided I'm missing out and put it on my "to watch" list. But I have nothing to say about it at this time.

Wow! I'm glad my post motivated you to make this great comment. This definitely deserves support from @topcomment, I think.

As for the Expert in Nothing, yes, the absurd power-up they give the protagonist halfway through the anime completely undermines the main plot, so honestly, that really discouraged me. Sure, that and the constant use of CGI (3D animation) in the constant battle scenes, which don't look so bad in comparison, but I still dislike it much more.

The Champingnon Witch thing is exactly like that; the story became stressfully slow and tedious after the halfway point. I don't know how I managed to watch it until its pathetic end. 🥴

I also really enjoyed the Kunon anime because of its protagonist and how it made the story entertaining to watch, despite its shortcomings due to its very low budget.

As for the only Isekai in the TOP, I don't think the protagonist is invincible or powerful as such, since his construction ability only gives him the possibility of creating things in a limited way. But as he himself says, he can get physically exhausted like anyone else. His skills are indeed excellent, but when facing a more powerful enemy like a dragon, he always needs help. The theme of the development of the village to which he is banished also catches my attention because of the care given to the protagonist's decision-making.

Personally, I liked the protagonist Hajime more because of his carefree and calm personality. Also, his story as an orphan is somewhat moving and exemplary. Although he does have his flaws in his behavior towards women, his drinking, and so on, that only makes him more realistic than any other generic protagonist of today.

Regarding Roll Over And Die, I agree with you about the animation and the way the story unfolds. I think that, more than the constant use of dark themes and CGI, what shocked me most was its ending and the lack of tragedy, compared to the beginning. You're right about the villains, it's completely absurd.

Frieren, you have to watch it, even though it might make you cry in the first half of its first season, the second half onwards is a complete marvel in terms of adventure, action, comedy, romance, etc. What fascinates me about Frieren is that its animated adaptation is perfect for anyone who enjoys good animation and a moving story at the same time.

Thank you so much for your comment and support. 🤗

Of all the ones on the list, the only one I watched was Champignon Witch, and I have to say I loved it. I hope it gets a sequel and they don't just let it gather dust 😕. The animation and story are really captivating. As for Kunon the Sorcerer Can See, I started watching it, but it lost my interest, although my sister said it got interesting. Even so, I don't think I'll watch it anytime soon. With all these amazing and big premieres this season, it seems unlikely.
