Plot
The movie opens with a lavish party at the home of the wife of our protagonist, Paul Crewe, a former NFL quarterback who was accused long ago of fixing a game. Tired of his life and his relationship with his girlfriend, Lena—who treats him like an object—he decides to go for a “drive” in her luxury car. Drunk and out of control, Paul triggers a massive police chase throughout the city that even makes the news. After being caught, he is sentenced to three years in a Texas correctional facility, where a completely uncertain fate awaits him.

To be honest with you, this is one of my favorite Adam Sandler movies. The Longest Yard is one of those movies that gives me a bit of a guilty pleasure, since it’s one of the very few sports movies I actually enjoy watching, but at the same time, it’s one of the most criticized and practically hated of all the “modern” adaptations of the classic 1970s film. So, as someone who isn’t a fan of sports in general—let alone American football—I really like this movie solely because it stars our good old Adam Sandler.
While it’s not one of his best acting performances, Adam Sandler manages to give us a solid performance, as well as a much funnier and more entertaining take on the iconic Paul Crewe. I won’t deny that I’m completely unfamiliar with the lead actor from the 1970s film of the same name, since it’s not from my era. However, Sandler is from my era, which is why I consider his performance to be the best I’ve seen—at least for a sports movie with comedy thrown in, in the signature style that Sandler does so well. Maybe that’s why many fans don’t like it, but I do.

The Longest Yard es de esas películas que me generan cierto gusto culposo ya que es de las poquísimas películas deportivas que me gustan ver, pero a su vez es de las más criticadas y prácticamente odiadas de todas las adaptaciones “modernas” de la película clásica de los años 70. Así que, como alguien que no es fan del deporte en general -y mucho menos del fútbol americano-, me gusta mucho esta película únicamente porque tiene como protagonista a nuestro conocido Adam Sandler.
Si bien no es tampoco de sus mejores trabajos actorales, Adam Sandler logra darnos una buena interpretación, además de una versión mucho más graciosa y entretenida del icónico Paul Crewe. No voy a negar que ignoro por completo al principal protagonista de la película homónima de los 70 ya que no es de mi época. Sin embargo, Sandler sí es de mi época, así que por eso considero su actuación e interpretación la mejor que he visto, al menos para una película deportiva con comedia incluida al puro estilo en el que Sandler sabe hacer. Tal vez y sea por eso que a muchos fans no les gusta, pero a mí sí.

But anyway, I suppose everything I’m saying about the main character is largely due to his great introduction. We’re talking about the first few minutes of the movie, which I consider to be one of the best scenes in the film. That opening not only tells us what the movie is about, but also gives us a pretty excellent introduction to who Paul Crewe is. Aside from being a former football player, he’s a millionaire who betrayed an entire nation due to certain accusations and now is only looking to put an end to the guilt and misery that consume him.
Interestingly, after committing the reckless act he does at the beginning of the film, he is sent to a maximum-security prison in Texas. There, he learns that he was brought there to be forced to coach the football team made up of the prison’s security staff. The owner, Rudolph Hazen, aims to become the city’s mayor and, at the same time, lead the team he formed at the correctional facility to the national league. After subjecting him to various forms of torture, Paul Crewe agrees, but first suggests holding a “trial” game for the team by forming another team with some of the inmates there to demonstrate his talent on the field.

Estamos hablando de los primeros minutos de la película, lo cual considero que es una de las mejores escenas de esta película. Dicho inicio no solo nos cuenta de qué trata la misma, sino que también nos da una introducción bastante excelente sobre quién es Paul Crewe. Aparte de ser un ex jugador de fútbol americano, es un millonario que traicionó a toda una nación debido a ciertas acusaciones y ahora solo busca acabar con esa culpa y desdicha que lo consume.
Curiosamente, luego de hacer la locura que hace al principio de la película y ser llevado a una prisión de máxima seguridad de Texas. Allí se entera de que fue traído para ser obligado a entrenar al equipo de fútbol americano formado por los miembros de seguridad del lugar. El dueño, Rudolph Hazen, busca convertirse en alcalde de la ciudad y a su vez llevar al equipo que formó en su correccional a la liga nacional. Luego de forzarlo con diferentes torturas, Paul Crewe accede, pero antes le da la idea de hacer un juego de “prueba” para el equipo formando otro equipo con algunos de los reos del lugar y así demostrar su talento en la cancha.

That’s how our protagonist begins to find a purpose in his life—imprisoned, confined, and abandoned alongside other lunatics and thugs. The irony of it all is that, in the end, this place and these fellow inmates quickly become his new family. This also becomes the main running gag of the film, where we often see how Paul enjoys the company of others and manages to bond with some of the inmates he spends the most time with during training sessions. We know Adam Sandler already has a knack for making us laugh, and he shows us a bit of that here.
But what really stands out in this movie is the chemistry he has with the other cast members, such as Chris Rock, who plays the beloved Caretaker—a character who’s like the typical supporting character of color who’s always there to liven up every moment with his comments and racist jokes. However, here the chemistry he has with Sandler is excellent, and his character even gives us one of the film’s few dramatic moments toward the end. I always appreciate it when, in these Sandler comedies, the supporting characters we come to know manage to stand out in one way or another.
Es así como nuestro protagonista empieza a tener algo qué hacer con su vida, preso, recluido y abandonado junto con otros lunáticos y matones. Lo irónico de todo esto es que, al final, este lugar junto con estos otros reclusos se vuelve rápidamente su nueva familia. Esto también se vuelve el chiste principal de la misma cinta donde muchas veces vemos cómo Paul disfruta de la compañía de los demás y consigue relacionarse con algunos de los reclusos con los que más se las pasa en los entrenamientos. Sabemos que Adam Sandler ya tiene talento para hacernos reír y esto nos lo demuestra un poco aquí.
Pero en esta película destaca más la química que posee con los demás miembros del elenco, como por ejemplo Chris Rock quien interpreta al querido Caretaker (Curandero) que es como el típico personaje secundario de color que siempre está para animar cada momento con sus comentarios y chistes racistas. Sin embargo, aquí la química que tiene con Sandler es excelente y su personaje incluso nos da uno de los escasos momentos dramáticos que tiene la misma cinta al final. Me gusta siempre que en estas películas de comedia de Sandler los personajes secundarios que conocemos siempre logren destacarse de una u otra manera.

The movie itself features a variety of characters who, as dangerous ex-convicts, are expected to have certain issues and temperaments—and some of them are even a little scary to be around. However, what’s funny about these characters is seeing them have fun and “break bones” while playing American football. As for the latter, since I’m not a fan of this or any other kind of sport, I don’t really care whether everything American football represents in this movie—featuring testosterone-fueled inmates and security guards—is portrayed accurately or not.
That whole “teaching people to play American football” thing isn’t something I care much about—especially in a movie like this one, which I grew up watching just for the laughs and because so much of it features moments that are simply unforgettable. What fascinates me about this movie is the fact that they used American football as a narrative device to give us a variety of funny scenes. As you can imagine, the movie relies heavily on physical comedy—that is, hits, falls, tackles, and so on. And in this movie, we see quite a few moments like that which are so funny they actually make you want to never play this game, to be honest.
La misma cinta nos ofrece una variedad de personajes que, al ser ex-convictos peligrosos, se espera que sean gente con ciertos problemas, temperamento y algunos hasta dan algo de miedo estar cerca de ellos. Sin embargo, lo gracioso de estos personajes es verlos divertirse y “romper huesos” jugando fútbol americano. En cuanto a esto último, como no soy un fan de este y de ningún otro tipo de deportes, me sabe igual si está bien interpretado o no todo lo que representa el fútbol americano en esta película de presos y miembros de seguridad repletos de testosteronas.

Lo que me fascina de esta película es el hecho de que hayan utilizado el fútbol americano como recurso narrativo para darnos una variedad de escenas graciosas. Como ya se pueden imaginar, la película recurre mucho al humor físico, o sea, golpes, caídas, tackleadas, etc. Y en esta película vemos una cantidad no pequeña de momentos así que dan tanto risa como ganas de no jugar nunca este juego, la verdad.

But anyway, setting aside the physical comedy, the racist and sexist jokes, and the over-the-top characters in this movie, something else that caught my attention is how its highly predictable plot becomes so inspiring that it’s almost absurd. Don’t get me wrong—the movie doesn’t teach you to solve your problems with violence, even if it seems that way. What it ultimately tries to convey is that, whatever you consider “family,” it’s always worth taking care of them and not letting them down with the decisions you make. It also teaches us that the past doesn’t define us—not at all.
It’s curious how it puts a person who merely altered the score of a football game on the same level as all kinds of criminals and convicts. It’s as if the film were trying to tell us from the very beginning that betrayal is just as bad—or even worse—than theft or murder. Whatever the intentions may be, a person who has betrayed their own at some point in their life is never looked upon favorably. Paul Crewe’s story illustrates this very well, and we clearly see how the weight of that decision—and what he tries to do throughout the film—becomes his own punishment.
Pero bueno, lejos del humor físico, los chistes racistas, sexistas y los personajes tan llamativos que tiene esta película; algo que también me llamó la atención de la misma es cómo la trama tan predecible que tiene se vuelve tan inspiradora que es absurdo, inclusive. No me malentiendan, la película no te enseña a resolver tus problemas con violencia, aunque lo parezca. Lo que nos intenta transmitir al final es que, sea lo que sea que consideres como “familia”, siempre valdrá la pena cuidarla y no decepcionarlos con las decisiones que tomes. También nos enseña que el pasado no nos define, para nada.
Es curioso cómo nos pone en el mismo plano o lugar a una persona que solamente modificó los puntos de un juego de fútbol americano con todo tipo de criminales y convictos. Es como si nos intentara decir desde el principio que la traición es algo igual o peor que el robo o el asesinato, inclusive. Sea cuales sean las intenciones, nunca está bien visto a una persona que haya traicionado a los suyos en algún momento de su vida. El caso de Paul Crewe nos demuestra esto muy bien y notamos claramente cómo el peso de dicha decisión y lo que intenta hacer a lo largo de la misma película se vuelve su propio castigo.

Another interesting thing to note about this movie is that almost half of it consists entirely of an American football game. What’s interesting isn’t that, but the fact that it’s still just as entertaining—or even more so—than the rest of the movie. Aside from being the “big moment” where we see the results of all the training and preparation the protagonist’s team of thugs has undergone, the game itself is a nonstop series of entertaining, funny, and even fascinating moments to watch, thanks to the plays and scenes that lead up to the grand finale.
Although I believe the latter is largely due to the film’s audiovisual quality and excellent production values. Here we see the director’s name again—he’s also worked on the films I’ve reviewed previously. But unlike those films, here we see a very noticeable improvement in cinematography, shots, sequences, camera movement styles, visual effects, and even very well-executed transitions. The film’s direction makes it feel unlike a typical comedy. This is largely due to the use of light and shadow, among other things.
Otra cosa interesante que se podría decir de esta película es que casi la mitad de la misma es todo un partido de fútbol americano. Lo interesante no es eso, sino el hecho de que aún así siga siendo igual o hasta más entretenido que el resto de la película. Aparte de ser el “gran momento” donde vemos el resultado de todo el entrenamiento y preparación que han tenido el equipo de matones del protagonista, la misma es un no parar de momentos entretenidos, graciosos y hasta fascinantes de ver por las jugadas y las escenas que nos muestran hasta su gran final.
Aunque esto último considero que tiene más atribución el apartado audiovisual y la excelente producción que tiene la misma película. Aquí se repite de nuevo el nombre del director que también ha trabajado en las películas que he reseñado anteriormente. Pero a diferencia de aquellas películas, aquí vemos una mejora muy notable en fotografía, planos, secuencias, estilos de movimientos, efectos visuales y hasta transiciones muy bien hechas. La dirección que tiene la película hace que no se parezca a una película de comedia. Esto se debe mayormente al uso de las luces y sombras, entre otras cosas.

It has a humorous tone, but it really stands out here since much of the movie has a mostly neutral or even dramatic tone. Of course, we feel this way until a certain point in the movie, and then it changes completely. The entire American football game sequence is also very well done, especially because it makes excellent use of camera angles, cinematography, motion effects, and slow-motion shots. The sound effects are also excellent in this movie, but nothing compares to the soundtrack, which blends Rock and Hip-Hop very well. This is a must-see for any Sandler fan.
Personally, I give it a rating of 8/10 as far as the comedy and sports genres are concerned.
Tiene su tono humorístico, pero resalta bastante aquí ya que gran parte de la película posee un tono mayormente neutro o hasta dramático. Claro, hasta cierta parte de la película sentimos esto y luego cambia por completo. Toda la parte del partido de fútbol americano está también muy bien hecha, sobre todo porque recurre muy bien al uso de planos, fotografía y efectos de movimiento y cámaras lentas. Los efectos de sonido también están excelentes en esta película, pero nada se compara a la banda sonora que tiene y que combina tanto el Rock como el Hip-Hop muy bien. Esta es la película que todo fan de Sandler debe de ver.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8/10 en lo que respecta al género de comedia y deportes.
