Say All You Like, I'm Still Me. LOH#284

Interesting one I must say, this prompt actually reminds me of a scenario that happens earlier this year at a friends wedding party.

I was just at the party but my usual and normal self, with that cute smile of mine while trying to observe the environment, because I do more of observing than talking. Music was blaring, people were dancing in twos and in groups, I was just there observing with a glass of wine in hand. And in all honesty it was a beautiful moment, I loved the designs, the color mix and all were topnotch, but with how beautiful the wedding party was, I kind of had my own fair share of experience that actually aligns perfectly with this topic.

It was towards the end of bringing the whole party into an end, I had done the greetings and all, I saw old faces too and did some little catch-ups, and I just stepped out a little to sigh the stress all out and breathe in some fresh air, that was when I hears some group of people I thought were my friends discussing, they weren't talking about the wedding or their jobs and all, they actually picked me as a case study and were saying derogatory things while laughing at it... together with strangers o🤦.

To be honest, I wanted to walk up to them and do something, but I calmed myself. They were actually talking loudly and I guess they didn't even know, maybe because of the loud music coming from inside the hall. At a time, they noticed I was looking at them, and they still burst out laughing, oh no. But then, I'm matured enough to not cause a scene at a friend's party, and even if it's not a party, I trust my usual self to still stay calm. So, I just calmed, cause I realized they just wanted to kind of reduce me and talk down on me, without minding how the strangers they are with may start seeing me.

I took another glance at them before stepping back in, I just feel they don't deserve my response, and it's not worth causing a scene over, not at a joyous gathering like this. I smiled at them and went in. I greeted some new people I was just seeing again with a warm smile and handshakes and took my seat near the small bar that was erected in the hall for the occasion. A few moments later, they all came back in and came by the bar, they talked and I responded normally, then one of them decided to say the same thing they were saying outside in a joking like way, I just smiled, looked him in the eyes and said, "Y'all can say what you like, everyone is definitely entitled to his/her opinion. So, that's your view, not mine."

He wanted to say something else, but I cut him short and responded with a final tone, "say all you like, I'm still me."

I didn't give room for any drama or word banter. And I continued with my drink while waving at people and smiling as if nothing happened. But I'm glad I did what I did, because people will define you, it's left for you to accept or reject their definitions.

And till the party came to an end that day, there was no noise, no drama or exchange of words. Everyone respected themselves. And I left that night with peace in my heart.
