The Promise
"People aren't going to leave traditional social media for the blockchain..."
This statement that I heard on a recent podcast has been dwelling in my mind for days now....
You see, I have always believed in this blockchain. It had everything it needed to put a dent into the need for web 2. #web3 as it was heralded was a new kind of social media. You owned this content. There was no company in charge, decentralized social media. It started with a simple blogging platform, but has gone onto many other forms.
And to be honest, it all works great! It works like it's supposed to. Sure there are hurdles every now and again, but overall the blockchain has been doing what it was designed to do.
Why hasn't it caught on then?
Where are the masses we have been promised? We all agree, this is a much better place to spend your time in, but where are the numbers? And before someone tells me, they are coming...Let's be clear, the 'promise' has been here for years now. Marketing plans have come and gone more than I can count, and at the end of the day, people aren't showing up in the numbers we had hoped.
And that's too bad because...Like I mentioned above, once you are here, you know how great this place can be.
So why haven't people flooded the blockchain?
I have heard on Threads and around the chain that the numbers have gone down overall, is attrition is a thing here? I can't confirm or deny it. Simply because I haven't looked lol But I'm sure someone like @dalz could show everyone what the numbers are like. But something else is missing for me personally, and that's the excitement.
I used to seriously think I could build a solid second income from my efforts here. And I get it, the price of the token has stayed pretty low for years now. But it's hard to get fired up for 5 dollars worth of crypto every 2-3 days. And I can't blame anyone but myself for that, simply because I have lost the fire I once had for everything online, not just crypto.
But still....The promise!
That's what has kept me here because my goodness, we really do have a superior blockchain and a fantastic opportunity to own your content. But will that bring the masses?
A few years ago, I was sure I had the answers. Keep promoting it, showing the use case, highlight the community. But does that even matter now?
AI is here.
Things are changing.
Does 'community' still matter?
I think it does. I hope it does. I pray it does.
But what will it take for Hive to finally break into the stratosphere?
I'm ready to listen to all suggestions and ideas!!

I think we need something that appeals to people outside of the chain and use that as a funnel to get them interested in Hive. Maybe VSC or something else can be that deciding factor.
Yeah Hive has tried a lot, games, blogs, social media, maybe the time for VSC is arriving just in time.
I think community will mattet even more in an age of AI. Human comnections will be valued higher, because we will be flooded by AI services all around.
I need to re-read David Sax's Revenge of Analog.
One of the best books ever!
I think another reason why people don't stay, is because it's very hard for someone who keeps posting and engaging every other day but doesn't get upvote on their post, it's kind of discouraging.
I know one needs to be patient because it takes time to grow here but a little encouragement would help if someone has been consistent.
I wish there was a system that helps those that are consistent
I agree with this
Oh for sure.
No one owes anyone a vote, and I get the argument for that. However if people show up and consistently try to add value, they will eventually leave if they dont feel valued.
I think the problem is retention.
Could be for sure. Lots of people have left.
Social Media on a blockchain just like certain messenger apps simply were too late to the game. The herd, the masses or numbers were already settled in comfy web2 couches and as long as no „herd heads“ or „multipliers“ are pulling these lazy (m)asses out of their comfy couches we‘ll keep being perceived as an exhausting, complicated niche outside their comfy zones. That’s what i get back when talking to people. A lot of them are even still convinced the whole blockchain/crypto thing is a giant scam.
And on the other hand there is the dead internet theory that becomes a reality through ai more and more every day …

Exactly!
Why on earth do people think that others will give up their comfort for...Decentralization? lol Just wont happen.
…
Hive is too centralized to succeed. Big investors won't put money into it given the uncertainty, and if the price doesn't rise, it's not attractive to participants. It's been a fish chasing its tail for years.
100% agree. The truth is, this place is centralized.
If AI would be more integrated more to the blockchain would be ideal
I think the less AI the better lol
There's a person I recently discovered on Twitter who has interesting solutions, check out my thread here below 👇

Thanks man, I will check it out!
Okay then
As for me, I’m making money here but it’s not sth I can depend on but I see it as a way of building wealth
If people grow it slow and steadily it can build nicely. But if you take a month off, poof people forget you quick lol
Another thing is that a lot of people fee it is quite difficult to navigate through Hive so that is why they do not stay
And what's crazy...This is actually one of the easiest blockchains to use.
I think the biggest thing for me is that Social Constructs are an investment, and to most people, that investment needs to yield a return. May it be financial, human connections, resources, transactions, learning or something else. If one does not feel that the reason they are investing themselves into something is not yielding the returns they hope to achieve from it, they may feel Jaded and fade out. It also come from knowing whether you have realistic expectations, as well.
Very good point!
As soon as people dont feel valued, they disappear.
