Leaving Comfort Zone - The Game Changer
A student who wants to pass his/her exams with good grades must be willing to deprive him/herself of some sleep by burning some midnight candles. An employee who needs promotion must be willing to level up by taking some courses which might deprive him/her some extra activities. Whatever you give up, to achieve something else is your comfort.
Everyone likes a soft life but not everyone is willing to do all it takes to live it. There's always a price tag to every new level. The courage of going through the pain is always commendable. Just like the saying “No good thing comes easy”. But the question is; are you willing to pay the price?
A lot of people are still in the same position they've been for years because they are afraid of leaving their comfort zones. Nothing changes in one's comfort zone. The comfort zone is stagnation and limits growth. Practically, nothing grows there.
I remember some years back when my husband and I decided to relocate to another state in my country, we had some challenges then in our business and needed to change the environment. The idea was to go to an entirely new location and start all over again.
But before we finally decided, I was a bit skeptical, a lot of ‘what Ifs’ flooded my mind. I was afraid of the unknown. A place where we'd start learning a new language, ‘what if it turns out worse than it were?’, ‘what if we didn't make any headway and people start making mockery of us for taking such a decision?’ These and more were at war in my mind…the fear of the unknown.
When we got to our new location, initially it was as if my fears had come upon us. Some close relatives even blamed us for taking such a decision. Leaving a bigger busy commercial city for a completely opposite one. But my mom's usual statement was and still is our motivating factor- “at the heights of every challenge comes breakthrough “. It was a very difficult decision, but it was one of our best. Indeed, if it doesn't break you, it will make you.
The fear of uncertainties that one is likely to encounter in the future is one of the reasons why so many people cage themselves in their “comfort” zones. You know, fear magnifies. It paints an unreal picture of negativity in the mind, showing you a thousand and one reasons why leaving would be a complete waste of time, money and effort. Blindfolding you with momentary comfort, which prevents you from seeing the big picture by going through its painful yet sweet process.
Leaving your comfort zone is hard and comes with a lot of challenges that may even question your sanity, but if you persist with patience, resilience and doggedness you'd marvel and be proud of yourself for taking such a bold step. Just like an eagle when it wants to renew its strength, the pain is usually severe but when it eventually does, it soars to a much higher altitude.
To remain in one's comfort zone is to stay stagnant. It doesn't promote growth or yield progress. Growth starts when we leave comfort irrespective of the huddles to embrace the pain with every strength in us. The outcome is usually phenomenal.
