Ayer me sorprendieron con un regalo sumamente especial que me hizo viajar de inmediato en el tiempo: un "Aparato para Inhalación" original de la histórica Droguería Sarrá de La Habana, conservado en su caja con todos sus accesorios de metal, vidrio y papel de la época.

Sostener un pedacito de historia y patrimonio médico-farmacéutico en mis manos fue una experiencia tan nostálgica que no pude evitar preparar una publicación muy personal para compartir las fotos, los detalles de esta reliquia y una breve reflexión sobre la memoria y los objetos que perduran. Yesterday, I was surprised with an extremely special gift that immediately took me back in time: an original “Inhalation Device” from the historic Sarrá Pharmacy in Havana, preserved in its box with all its metal, glass, and paper accessories from that era.
Holding a little piece of history and medical-pharmaceutical heritage in my hands was such a nostalgic experience that I couldn’t help but put together a very personal post to share the photos, the details of this relic, and a brief reflection on memory and the objects that endure. ¿Te ha pasado alguna vez que recibes un regalo y, al abrirlo, sientes que estás destapando una cápsula del tiempo? Eso me ocurrió ayer. No era un objeto moderno, ni con pantalla, ni con luces led. Era una caja de cartón desgastada, con marcas evidentes del paso de las décadas, que guardaba en su interior algo realmente especial.

Al retirar el papel de embalaje envejecido, me encontré con un antiguo "Aparato para Inhalación" procedente de la famosa Droguería Sarrá de La Habana. Tener entre las manos este pedacito de historia médica y patrimonio cubano fue una sensación difícil de explicar: una mezcla de asombro, nostalgia y profunda curiosidad.

El ritual de abrir una caja del pasado

La experiencia comenzó desde el primer contacto con la caja. El papel de embalaje original, seco y crujiente, desprendía ese aroma característico a libros viejos y memoria guardada. Entre las virutas de papel rasgado que servían como protección —un detalle de empaque de otra época que hoy casi ha desaparecido—, reposaban las piezas de metal, vidrio y madera.

Lo primero que llamó mi atención fue el folleto de instrucciones. A pesar de los bordes desgastados y las manchas del tiempo, el título resalta con claridad: APARATO PARA INHALACIÓN. Con un grabado detallado, explica minuciosamente cómo debía llenarse el caldero con agua caliente, encender la lamparilla de espíritu y colocar el medicamento en el depósito de vidrio para inhalar el vapor. Al armar con cuidado las partes del aparato, descubrí el sello grabado en la base metálica: DROGUERÍA SARRÁ - HABANA.

Para quienes conocemos la historia de La Habana, la Droguería Sarrá no es cualquier nombre. Ubicada en la emblemática esquina de Teniente Rey y Compostela, en La Habana Vieja, fue uno de los complejos farmacéuticos más importantes de América Latina. Saber que este objeto en particular salió de esos mostradores hace casi cien años le da un valor sentimental incalculable. No es solo una pieza antigua de colección; es un testigo mudo de cómo nuestras familias cuidaban su salud en otras épocas.

Detalles que cuentan una historia

Lo que más me fascina de este inhalador es la ingeniería y la estética con la que fue fabricado. La pequeña lámpara de alcohol en la base, la pantalla protectora de metal con sus orificios, la pieza de madera torneada que sirve como empuñadura y el tubo cónico de vidrio por donde salía el vapor pulverizado... todo encaja con una precisión asombrosa.

Al sostener el pequeño vasito de vidrio verdoso sobre el depósito, me puse a pensar en la cantidad de mañanas o noches en que alguien, en alguna casa habanera de hace décadas, encendió esa misma mecha para aliviar un resfriado. Hay una sensibilidad muy bella encerrada en estos objetos cotidianos que han logrado sobrevivir al tiempo.

Ayer, mientras acomodaba nuevamente cada pieza en su sitio para tomar las fotos que hoy les comparto, pensaba en lo rápido que descartamos las cosas hoy en día. Vivimos en una era de consumo inmediato donde casi todo es desechable. Por eso, recibir un detalle como este me hizo pausar y valorar el peso de la memoria.

Tener este inhalador de la Droguería Sarrá es conservar un fragmento de nuestra identidad urbana y médica, una prueba tangible de la historia que respiramos a diario sin darnos cuenta.

It wasn’t a modern object—no screen, no LED lights. It was a worn cardboard box, with clear signs of the passage of decades, that held something truly special inside.

As I removed the aged wrapping paper, I came across an old “Inhalation Device” from the famous Sarrá Drugstore in Havana. Holding this little piece of medical history and Cuban heritage in my hands was a feeling hard to explain—a mix of wonder, nostalgia, and deep curiosity.

The ritual of opening a box from the past

The experience began the moment I first touched the box. The original wrapping paper, dry and crisp, gave off that distinctive scent of old books and cherished memories. Nestled among the shreds of torn paper that served as padding—a packaging detail from another era that has all but disappeared today—were the metal, glass, and wooden parts.

The first thing that caught my eye was the instruction booklet. Despite its worn edges and the stains of time, the title stands out clearly: INHALATION DEVICE. With detailed engravings, it explains step by step how to fill the kettle with hot water, light the spirit lamp, and place the medicine in the glass reservoir to inhale the steam. Reading those words, written in the spelling and style of days gone by, immediately transported me back to the early 20th century.

As I carefully assembled the parts of the device, I discovered the stamp engraved on the metal base: DROGUERÍA SARRÁ - HAVANA.

For those of us familiar with Havana’s history, Droguería Sarrá is not just any name. Located on the iconic corner of Teniente Rey and Compostela in Old Havana, it was one of the most important pharmaceutical establishments in Latin America. Knowing that this particular object came from those counters nearly a hundred years ago gives it immeasurable sentimental value. It’s not just an antique collector’s item; it’s a silent witness to how our families took care of their health in bygone eras, when medicine was as much a science as it was an artisanal craft.

Details that tell a story

What fascinates me most about this inhaler is the engineering and aesthetics that went into its construction. The small alcohol lamp at the base, the protective metal screen with its holes, the turned wooden piece that serves as a handle, and the conical glass tube through which the atomized vapor emerged… everything fits together with astonishing precision.

As I held the small greenish glass cup over the reservoir, I began to think about how many mornings or nights, decades ago, someone in some Havana home had lit that very same wick to relieve a cold. Yesterday, as I was putting each piece back in its place to take the photos I’m sharing with you today, I was thinking about how quickly we discard things these days. We live in an era of instant consumption where almost everything is disposable. That’s why receiving a little gift like this made me pause and appreciate the weight of memory.

Owning this inhaler from Droguería Sarrá means preserving a fragment of our urban and medical identity—tangible evidence of the history we breathe in every day without even realizing it.
