Heavy User... Looking for Ergonomic Desk Chair!
That's it! I need a new chair! My old ergonomic chair became unusable some time ago, and I've been using a borrowed chair for a while, which is not good for the purpose I'm using it for, or for the time it's used daily.
My back is reminding me that I postponed the decision to buy a new chair unjustifiably for a long-enough time.
Since I probably spend 8-10+ hours a day in front of a computer most of the time (sometimes longer), a good ergonomic chair is... critical, I'd say.
How it looks probably isn't the most important thing since it's for my home office, but how good it does its job to relief the tension of various parts of the body while working for a long time... is. Also, how long it lasts. Price may be a criterion, but not as important as the others I mentioned, since without a good chair, treating health issues caused by using a bad chair would cost much more than an expensive chair. At least, that's how I feel about it, my family doesn't seem to agree and is advising me to look for cheaper options—"after all, it's a chair". The choice is mine, and they won't say anything (more) if I choose an expensive chair.
Maybe they have a point too, and I aim too high. Perhaps I am under the impression of a certain ad, with all I was looking for (and more), highly adjustable. But the price is very high too. I could have settled to a model without some of the extras I don't need, for a lower price.
Now I wonder if I should buy a chair online or not, at all, even if it's highly adjustable. My back pains usually come from the lumbar area. I probably have a more accentuated than average curvature of the spine in the lumbar area, so that part of the chair needs to fit well my back. When I bought my previous chair (from a physical store), having a special moving part for the lumbar area was considered quite advanced. Now it is pretty standard I guess, but I've seen a model (still not on the market) with a kind of piston than pushes against the lumbar area at an adjustable tension—so, that part of the chair would constantly stay in contact with the lumbar area, no matter how you move on the chair.
Presentation video for the chair I'm talking about above. Not my first choice, btw.
I have an average height and some would say I'm below average with my weight, which is good when searching for a chair. Being too tall makes it difficult to find a chair suitable for you, and weight matters for how much the chair could last in a good condition.
We are diverse and with different needs. But sometimes ideas pop up when you see them at someone else first.
What do you guys use? What would you buy if you were looking for a chair? Maybe there's something you would consider improving at your own chair.

The office chair should be ergonomic but it's very uncomfortable for the back, at home a wooden one 🤣
I'd buy one from physical shop tough, at least you can try it
We have a few smaller wooden ones too. But I wouldn't dare work at the laptop longer than a couple of minutes sitting on them, lol.
Really? I guess it depends on the chair. Some really are.
Yeah, I lean toward that too. I'll have to see when I get there what is available.
Are you all-in on the chair?
Well... I need a new chair! Sooner or later, I'll need to buy one. Rather sooner than later.

Your back deserves the investment, a good chair isn’t a luxury, it’s a daily necessity.
You're probably right. But I need to check more, including in the physical stores, to make sure I don't overpay and that my body agrees with some of the new shapes of some chairs and how they can be adjusted (if they can).
We all work online, so we must have a special chair where we can sit comfortably.
Yep, couldn't agree more.
I think it just depends. I am fine with whatever chair, but I also don't have any issues. However, if your back pains are there, then its worth the investment.
I'm pretty sold on the idea that buying a chair I would use intensively without testing it can be problematic.
I had the same dilemma as you many times in the past... I have no idea how many chairs I changed, but there were a lot! Every time I have to buy, I look at fancy (more expensive) chairs, and I finish with one from Carrefour or Ikea... Maybe one day...
Tbh, I didn't try any of these expensive ones, and none of my friends have any... I suppose I need a recommendation from a trustworthy person to finally make a purchase...
But you are on spot with your statement... None of the chairs is too expensive if it helps you to avoid back issues!

I have my doubts buying a chair online. On this part, I agree with my family. Even if I had my eyes on one that is practically fully adjustable on every aspect... you never know how it feels for your body until you use it for multiple hours a day.
Funny thing that I can get an appointment to "test drive it", and I'd likely pass by the city where the showroom is in a couple of days, but it's very unlikely that I'd be able to go into the city for that or schedule a testing on that day (at the hour I would be there).
Well... Most likely I'll settle... with some something better than what I have now and worse than maybe could have been...
Heman Miller have the most consistently good reviews. I plan to buy one if the bull market works out great for me.
This is a good tier list:
Thanks for the recommendations! I'll look into them.
A chair is a great investment, but the ones you see online can be very costly. I've need one now for over three years, and after seeing the costs, I use to actually convince myself that I don't need it because of how costly they can be.
Yeah, I sort of convinced myself it's too costly too. But I am more worried that they aren't as effective as the ads say, especially since every body is different.
Years ago I bought an automobile seat from a car mechanic that was selling a car for parts. So I got a Mercedes seat. I've been super happy with it. And it was super cheap. Just needed to be plugged in and adjusted since it doesn't have manual adjustment. But these seats are made very comfortable, so you don't get tired even in long travels.
Of course, no seat is going to compensate for an unbalanced life. Regularly getting up through the day, and having days off with going out and having good physical activity seems like a part of it.
You know... when I stopped at one of my choices, that is exactly what it reminded me of: an automobile seat (because it could be adjusted forward and backward).
You are absolutely right that we need to take breaks. Days off, well, I need to work more on that. There are a couple coming right up for me.
