Inu-Oh: A True Friendship - Anime Movie Review [ENG-ESP]

It's very difficult, when you find a good story, to find the right words to express your opinion, especially when you don't want to give away spoilers and allow others to experience the same feeling you've felt before. That's exactly what happened to me with the film I want to describe below. I won't go on too long and will try to be brief, because I want you to be able to experience it. Therefore, I'll limit myself to mentioning highlights and recommending it for what I believe to be its central theme. Let's begin!
Comencemos!

The anime film Inu-Oh, directed by Masaaki Yuasa, is a visual experience, as I really liked the animation style. It's also an auditory experience, transcending the expectations of the musical genre. Set in 14th-century Japan during the Muromachi period, this masterpiece immerses us in a fascinating story about friendship, self-expression, and the search for truth through art, an art capable of overcoming the limitations of the senses and elevating the expression of the soul to the maximum.
Inu-Oh: The film's eponymous character is a tragic character from birth. He is a sarugaku dancer (a precursor to Noh theater) who was born with a series of physical deformities, considered a curse. Excluded by his father, separated from his siblings, and forced to live with a mask, Inu-Oh is a character who evolves from marginalization to become a stage star. His dance is an explosion of energy and a way of expressing his uniqueness. What is impressive, in my opinion, are the dances he performs, which closely resemble breakdancing set to rock melodies, completely defying the norms and superstitions of the time. Everything that initially seems like an uphill battle turns out to be the development of a great character who grows through the difficulties imposed by nature and society.
On the other hand, in this friendship that we could call a complementary duality, there is Tomona (also Tomoari): He is a young blind Biwa monk whose clan was massacred and he himself lost his sight due to a curse. Tomona possesses an innate ability to connect with spirits and is an exceptional musician. His encounter with Inu-Oh is the catalyst for the story, forming an artistic alliance that will change their lives and the cultural landscape of Japan. They connect because they lack senses: Inu-Oh is a deformed person, while Tomona is blind. One's passion for dancing and the other's passion for music overcomes these limitations, making them true theater stars. Something that fascinated me greatly was being able to learn about the ancient theater that was performed in Japan, the beliefs of the time, and the way of appreciating the world.
The relationship between Inu-Oh and Tomona is the central focus of the film. Their friendship is forged in adversity and nurtured by a mutual respect for each other's talents and uniqueness. Together, they find a way to overcome their own limitations and the expectations of a society that rejects them.
The plot of Inu-Oh unfolds like a rock opera with historical and mythological elements. The story begins, as mentioned before, with Inu-Oh and Tomona, both outcasts, finding solace and purpose in their art. As Inu-Oh perfects her dance and Tomona perfects her music, they begin to unearth the lost stories of lost souls, giving them voice through their performances. A crucial aspect of the plot is the reinterpretation of history and memory. Through their songs and dances, Inu-Oh and Tomona not only entertain but also challenge the official narratives imposed by the shogunate. Their performances become an act of rebellion, giving voice to the fallen and those whose stories were erased. The film explores themes such as censorship, the importance of historical truth, and the power of art to transcend time and the restrictions imposed by power.

Should you watch Inu-Oh?
Absolutely! Inu-Oh is a film that will captivate you from the very first moment with its originality and energy. It's a gem for lovers of anime, music, Japanese history, and those seeking a profound and visually striking narrative. If you appreciate stories that challenge convention and celebrate individuality through art, this film is an excellent choice. It will leave you reflecting on the power of artistic expression and the importance of remembering the voices of the past, while the meaning of friendship is reinforced under adverse circumstances, especially for us Westerners. In my view, it expresses very well ideas that we all have in mind and can understand from another perspective. The new and the artisanal come together here, as in other stories where ancient Japan blends with the newness of Western civilization, something inherited from the Meiji era. I've reserved many detailed opinions about the story to respect your right to view it without external value judgments. It's my hope that you can contemplate it and draw your own conclusions. For now this has been all and I say goodbye until soon.

Hey, I didn't know this movie at all, and you just created a need for it! It looks really good. A rock opera set in 14th-century Japan... the truth is, the mix sounds incredibly original and powerful. Just from the images and how you describe it, it's clear it's quite a visual journey.
The story of the two protagonists, outcasts who find their voice through art, is amazing to me. I'm really curious to see how they develop that friendship and how they blend rock music with that era.
It's a very good story, and it personally generated a great sense of empathy in me, and the artistic expression was undoubtedly very creative. I highly recommend it.
