Since we’re down the stretch of the pennant race, we'll do this check-in on light game days or when Venezuelan players don't have much to write home about from the night before. La pelea por un cupo a la postemporada está mucho más cerrada en la liga Americana que en el viejo circuito. Dicho esto, los Rays de Tampa y los Medias Blancas de Chicago, pasarían directo a la ronda divisional. ¿Puede Houston meterse directo? Sí, apenas tienen dos partidos perdidos más que los Sox, con igual número de victorias; sin embargo, para éste momento tendrían que jugar la ronda de comodines versus los Rangers de Texas (precisamente quienes le persiguen en el 2do. lugar de la división oeste). The playoff race is way tighter in the Junior Circuit than in the Senior Circuit. That being said, the Tampa Bay Rays and Chicago White Sox would punch their tickets straight to the ALDS. Can Houston secure a first-round bye? Yes, they’re sitting on just two more losses than the Sox with the same win total; however, as of right now, they’d have to play in the Wild Card Series against the Texas Rangers (the exact team riding their coattails for second place in the AL West). The other Wild Card matchup: a classic heavyweight rivalry featuring the Yankees and Red Sox. Which other squads are still in the hunt? The Twins, Guardians, Tigers, Orioles, Mariners, and Blue Jays. Everyone is just one hot streak away—like the run the Red Sox just put together—from jumping right into the thick of the race. The atmosphere in the AL is absolute gridlock.

En la liga Nacional, las cosas están mucho más despejadas. Es decir, también hay aspirantes como en la Americana, pero tendrían que obrar milagros para meterse en la pelea. Los que conseguirían pase directo a ronda divisional, para éste instante, serían Los Cerveceros de Milwaukee y Los Bravos de Atlanta. Acá conseguimos un criterio de desempate porque, aunque los Dodgers se encuentran empatados en el balance de victorias y derrotas con los Bravos, tendrían que jugar la ronda de comodines porque van perdiendo la serie particular contra los muchachos del tomahawk. Así las cosas, el primer enfrentamiento de comodines de la nacional sería entre los Dodgers y los Filis de Filadelfia. la serie restantes se jugaría entre los cachorros de Chicago y los Diamondbacks de Arizona. ¿Pretendientes? Con más probabilidades; Padres, Marlon y Cardenales. Con milagro de por medio: Piratas, Nacionales y Rojos.

Over in the National Circuit, things are much more cut and dry. I mean, there are hopefuls just like in the AL, but they’d need a total miracle to get back into the hunt. The squads clinching a first-round bye and heading straight to the NLDS right now would be the Milwaukee Brewers and Atlanta Braves. We actually run into a tiebreaker here because, even though the Dodgers are deadlocked in the standings with the Braves, they’d be forced to play in the Wild Card Series since they’re dropping the season series against the Tomahawk crew. That sets up the first NL Wild Card matchup between the Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies. The remaining series would feature a showdown between the Chicago Cubs and Arizona Diamondbacks. On the bubble? The Padres, Marlins, and Cardinals have the best shot. Needing a miracle: the Pirates, Nationals, and Reds.

Dos venezolanos fueron ayer inmortalizados por sus respectivos equipos, donde brillaron la mayor parte de sus respectivas carreras. Oswaldo "Ozzie" Guillén, campocorto de elegantes manos y manager ganador de Serie Mundial con los Medias Blancas de Chicago, fue celebrado en una ceremonia de inducción ayer en el Guaranteed Rate Field. De la misma manera, pero en el Oracle Park de San Francisco, el tercera base Pablo "Kung Fu Panda" Sandoval, fue inmortalizado dentro de los Gigantes de San Francisco. Two Venezuelan standouts were immortalized yesterday by the respective clubs where they spent the prime of their careers. Oswaldo "Ozzie" Guillén, a slick-fielding shortstop and World Series-winning skipper for the Chicago White Sox, was celebrated in an induction ceremony yesterday at Guaranteed Rate Field. Likewise, over at Oracle Park in San Francisco, third baseman Pablo "Kung Fu Panda" Sandoval was enshrined into the San Francisco Giants Wall of Fame. In Guillén's case, the honor went a step further as the South Siders also retired his jersey number, a milestone achieved by only two other Venezuelan legends: Luis Aparicio (11) and David Concepción (13). Hats off to both ambassadors of Venezuelan baseball.
