Sí, a veces nos llegan momentos en la vida donde mirar atrás es inevitable, por muy "vive el ahora" que usted sea. A nosotros nos llegó antier en la víspera de nuestro cumpleaños número 60, cuando miramos la presentación del "Field of Dreams" Game y reparamos en la cantidad de ex-peloteros (28 en total) pertenecientes al salón de la fama en sus años dorados, siendo perifoneados por el micrófono interno. Algunos ya muy desgastados como el caso de Tany Pérez, otros muy enteros como Rollie Fingers, pero todos de indudable fama y años encima. La emoción por verlos de nuevo tuvo como corolario la propia consciencia sobre el pasar del tiempo. Nos emocionó sabernos en muy buen estado físico, algo de lo que dudamos varias veces, dado nuestro descuido corporal mantenido por años. No podía evitar comparar el hecho diferencial en los desplazamientos y movimientos corporales de los allí presentes (en el campo de Iowa) e imaginar porqué hombres con mucha mayor edad se veían enteros respecto a otros atletas sin duda de "menor" edad, en el engramado. Allí fue cuando me dije: "Mierda...mañana cumplo 60"

Yeah, sometimes we hit those moments in life where looking back is just inevitable, no matter how much of a "live-in-the-moment" person you claim to be. For us, that moment struck two days ago on the eve of our 60th birthday, right as we were watching the Field of Dreams Game broadcast and realized the sheer number of Hall of Famers (28 in total) from back in the day being hyped up over the PA system. Some looked pretty worn out, like Tany Pérez, while others seemed totally solid, like Rollie Fingers, but every single one of them carried undeniable legacy and a lot of years on their shoulders. The rush of seeing them back out there came with a reality check about how fast Father Time moves. It felt awesome knowing we’re actually in great physical shape ourselves—something we’ve doubted more than a few times, considering how much we neglected our bodies over the years. I couldn't help but contrast how differently everyone out there on that Iowa field moved, wondering why some of these older guys looked so put-together compared to other athletes who were clearly younger. Right then, it hit me: "Shit... tomorrow I turn 60."
Por supuesto, nadie se va morir ahora...al menos eso creo porque me encuentro tecleando todavía. Pero una especie de largometraje, transmitido a nuestras ondas cerebrales, a una velocidad de vista de al menos 2x transcurre mientras la vela de la torta se quema. La mañana de ayer fuimos sorprendidos por un delivery de mi hija, que nos dio la excusa perfecta para salir de nuestra zona de confort, respecto a la temporada de la MLB. La inscripción: "Gracias por construir, inspirar y dejar huella cada día" coronaba nuestro pastel de cumpleaños, rematado con una simple pero no menos poderosa frase: "Feliz cumpleaños, papá" Y bueno, que decir, cuando alguien se toma la molestia y la linda iniciativa de escribir algo así en un pastel, porque sospechas algo bueno has dejado atrás en las personas. Pero lo más importante: la impronta en vuestra propia progenie. Y eso es algo muy valioso y reconfortante para quien siempre actuó sin dejar nunca sus convicciones de lado. ¿Por qué? Ajá, las convicciones; en nombre de ellas se han destruido vidas. De allí, lo increíblemente reivindicativo viniendo de una descendencia a la que no se las pusimos nada fácil.

Of course, nobody is kicking the bucket just yet... at least I think so since I’m still here typing away. But a whole feature film, playing inside our brainwaves at like 2x speed, flashes by while the birthday candle burns down. Yesterday morning, we were caught completely off guard by a delivery from my daughter, which gave us the perfect excuse to step out of our MLB season comfort zone. The icing on the cake read: "Thanks for building, inspiring, and leaving a mark every day," topped off with a simple yet powerful line: "Happy birthday, Dad." And man, what can you say? When someone goes out of their way and takes the sweet initiative to put something like that on a cake, you start to suspect you’ve actually left a good vibe behind in people. But most importantly: the impact on your own kids. That is something incredibly valuable and comforting for someone who always moved through life without ever throwing their convictions out the window. Why? Well, convictions—people have wrecked entire lives in their name. That’s exactly why it feels so incredibly validating coming from a next generation that we definitely didn't make things easy for.
Mediodía y era hora de "arreglarse", apagón de por medio y una cita nos esperaba en "La Felicita", un restaurante de especialidades italianas muy rico. Allá fuimos a parar invitado por mi esposa, pero la sorpresa de mis hermanos habiendo llegado de Caracas para la ocasión, se vio perjudicada porque vi sus coches aparcados en el estacionamiento del lugar. Obvio, microbio, que nos alegramos un montón. Sólo dos de ellos no pudieron venir, pero se hicieron presentes nuestra hermana Sonia con su hija y su yerno; mi hermano Ricardo y mi hermana Mónica con mi sobrina Sarah. Entre cervezas, entremeses y un sabroso plato de frutos marinos con salsa roja en la pasta, pasamos una tarde de recuerdos y charla sobre los últimos acontecimientos. Nos encantó ver muy repuesta a nuestra hermana Sonia, quien pasó por unos tragos amargos respecto a su salud. La torta y el consabido "Feliz cumpleaños" llenaron el ambiente hacia el final de la tarde y nos despedimos en el lobby del restaurante con la convicción de haber renovado nuestro cariño mutuo.

Noon rolled around and it was time to "get fixed up," in the middle of a power blackout, with a date waiting for us at "La Felicita," a seriously delicious Italian restaurant. Off we went, my wife's treat, but the surprise of my siblings driving down from Caracas for the occasion got kind of spoiled because I spotted their cars parked right outside. Obviously, no biggie, we were still absolutely thrilled. Only two of them couldn't make it, but our sister Sonia showed up with her daughter and son-in-law; my brother Ricardo, and my sister Mónica with my niece Sarah. Between beers, appetizers, and a killer seafood pasta with red sauce, we spent the afternoon reminiscing and catching up on the latest tea. We loved seeing our sister Sonia looking so recovered, especially after going through some rough times with her health. The cake and the usual "Happy Birthday" song filled up the room toward the end of the afternoon, and we said our goodbyes in the restaurant lobby, feeling totally sure that we had just reconnected and leveled up our mutual love.
Una botella de Ron Carúpano fue regalo de nuestro hijo menor y una llamada en vídeo de nuestro hijo Marco desde Los Ángeles, terminaron de complementar el día. Sí, 60 años no son pocos y quizás por ello, el onomástico con tal cifra es tan celebrado por el ser humano. Y en particular, por los latinoamericanos con mayor fervor. Se debe a un hito que marca el inicio de la edad dorada, cuando la recta final de la vida se asoma sin ningún desvío. De cada quien depende como aborda ésta fase del camino. Nuestro querer es poder depender siempre de nosotros mismos y la salud pasará a ser nuestro centro. Seguir cuidando el cuerpo no para evadir un resultado cierto, sino para tener la calidad de vida necesaria, con el fin de jamás recargar en otro nuestras propias necesidades. Nadar es el camino que veo como instrumento para obtener ese fin. Y continuar hasta que la naturaleza termine por descartar nuestra existencia ¿Es el final del camino? No, es el comienzo de otro...así sea.

A bottle of Ron Carúpano from our youngest son and a video call from our son Marco all the way from LA wrapped up the day perfectly. Yeah, 60 years is no small joke, and maybe that's why hitting that specific milestone gets so much hype from people. It's especially true for Latinos, who celebrate it with even more passion. It's all because of that major milestone marking the start of the golden years, right when the final stretch of life comes into view with no detours. How you handle this phase of the journey is totally up to you. Our main goal is to always be self-reliant, so health is going to be our main focus from here on out. Keeping up with body care isn't about running away from an inevitable outcome, but rather about securing the quality of life we need so we never become a burden to anyone else. Swimming is the path I see as my go-to tool to hit that goal. And we'll keep pushing until nature finally clocks us out. Is it the end of the road? Nope, it's just the start of a whole new chapter... it is what it is.
