The value of money

When does money have no value?

By definition, money must have value; otherwise, it wouldn't be money. If we look at it in its physical form, it's nothing more than pieces of paper with a nice design, but it's the way we organize ourselves to carry out exchanges of value. On the other hand, there's digital money, which is essentially the same thing. True value lies in the things we value.

As one of my high school teachers once said, "Money only has value when it's gone," when we exchange it for something that is valuable to us. For example, following the teacher's example, when we buy food. What's valuable to us is the food, which satisfies a need. The money we pay for it disappears as we get closer to that value, the thing that truly satisfies a need. In other words, money is merely an intermediary through which we obtain value.

In a strict sense, money has no value except at a specific time, in a specific place, and for specific people. You travel back in time with a million dollars. You arrive, overjoyed, in 12th-century Egypt with those sacks of money.

Can you imagine how much you could buy with that money?

Absolutely nothing. Of course, unless someone finds them interesting, then they might be worth something...

Cuándo el dinero no tiene valor?

Por definición, el dinero debe tener valor, de otro modo no sería dinero. Si lo vemos tal como es en su forma física, no son más que pedazos de papel con un buen diseño, pero son la forma en la que nos organizamos para realizar intercambios de valor. Por otro lado existe el dinero digital qué viene a ser exactamente lo mismo. Donde verdaderamente está el valor es en aquellas cosas que valoramos.

Como lo dijo una vez uno de los maestros en la secundaria, "el dinero solo tiene valor cuando se va", cuando lo intercambiamos por algo que para nosotros es valioso. Por ejemplo, siguiendo el mismo ejemplo del maestro, cuando compramos comida. Lo que vale para nosotros es la comida, que satisface una necesidad, el dinero que pagamos por ella se aleja al mismo tiempo que nos acercamos ese valor, ese que sí satisface una necesidad. Dicho de otra manera, el dinero nada más es un intermediario por el cual obtenemos valor.

En un sentido estricto el dinero no tiene valor alguno más que en un tiempo específico, en un lugar específico y para personas específicas. Viajas en el tiempo con un millón de dólares. Llegas muy feliz con esos costales de dinero a Egipto del siglo doce.

Te imaginas cuánto podrías comprar con ese dinero?

Absolutamente nada. Claro Al menos que a alguien le parezcan interesantes, Entonces sí podrían valer algo.

Por lo pronto nos vamos preparando para el mundial, que para unos tiene valor y para otro no tanto.

Esta es mi participación para la dinámica del día de hoy, por supuesto que hay mucho más que agregar a ese tema, pero creo que ya me pasé de 5 minutos. Gracias
