The Need for a Second Check

Something happened today that showed me clearly how we should always have a second look or a second check before doing anything especially at the point of spending some money.

For the past 3 days or so, my phone's battery had been failing to charge like it used to be. It was charging at a very slow pace. Even after plugging my phone to the power bank for over 12 hours it would not get above 40% charge. At this point I was already very uncomfortable because I couldn't do most of the things I do with my phone due to the phone's low battery.

At first, I suspected that the problem might be with my phone's charging cable, so I went to a nearby emergency phone store to purchase another one but changing the cable did not make any difference. From this point I was convinced that it was either with the charging port or with the tail board, so I decided it best to change the tail board.

So I went to a phone technician's store and informed him that I was going to change the tail board. While waiting for them, there were so many people before me so there was a long delay before they got to my turn.

At this point my son who was in school called me to inform me that he was on his way home for the weekend and that he was in town. I told him to meet me at the technician's store. When we met at the store, he took the phone from me and inspected it.

He was of the opinion that the tail board was not what was wrong with the phone and that it was still from the charging cable. I tried to argue with him because I had already assumed it was the phone itself and that I already changed the cable earlier in the day. But he insisted that I do not change the tail board and that the cable I purchased from the emergency store was probably not an original one which was why it wasn't working and suggested that we get an original cable.

We purchased another charging cable from the store, plugged it into the phone and within 5 minutes, the phone had reached 6% charge. It was then that I realized the problem was never from the phone at all.

By the time we got home, the phone's battery was at about 25% because I had my power bank with me from the time I left the house. And that was just how my son saved me from spending my money on something that was never faulty.

If I had proceeded with changing the tail board, I would still eventually buy another charging cable which means I would have had to spend money on it and the tail board which wasn't necessary.

At the end of the whole experience, I learned that sometimes, you rush and jump into conclusions based on your assumptions, but giving yourself another chance to look again or have a second check may actually save you a whole lot of avoidable mistakes.
