A Shattered Christmas Plan

Image created on Gemini

I was so confident that I was going to have a great Christmas with my family this year. I was looking forward to a great feast because I had planned out some of the important things we would need for the Christmas feast. However it seems all of my plans are nothing now, judging by the current state of things.

In July this year, I figured out that the cost of live chicken would be higher during the Christmas festival because the majority of people like to have live chicken for their Christmas meals. Like I did in the previous year, I decided to raise a few chickens by myself in my compound. I made a small poultry farm house and bought four two-week-old chicks. I bought the necessary feeds and diet for the little birds and started nurturing them. Two of the birds died the same week I started raising them, leaving me with two.

The two birds grew and became big within two months. I was very satisfied with their growth and was happy that I wouldn’t be spending money on meat during Christmas. But something unfortunate happened when we moved place in September. During the first week in our new place, one of the chickens died. The other one followed its sister the next week, leaving me with nothing for Christmas.

Nevertheless, I immediately ordered two two-week-old chicks to replace the dead ones and tried to see if they would be big enough for consumption by Christmas. I fed them rigorously and consistently, spending money to buy special feeds that could make them grow faster. The chickens grew as expected and were strong enough for consumption. I felt very happy with the outcome. But as if the universe was working against me, one after the other, the two chickens died. They couldn’t make it to Christmas Day.

With the death of the two chickens, my entire Christmas plan has been shattered. With the current economic state of our country, it will be very hard for many people to buy live chicken for Christmas this year. The price of a live chicken in the market is beyond the roof. What was sold for around $15 last year now goes for as high as $50 to $60.

When I first heard about the price they were selling chicken for in the market, I didn’t believe it. But after checking the price myself in the market today, I feel very sad because it means we won’t have chicken this Christmas. The price in the market is simply too high, and I can’t afford it. This means we might not have anything like feasting and heavy cooking this Christmas.

I feel sad that after all my efforts to make sure we have a great Christmas with a chicken meal, everything shattered and my plan blew up before my eyes.

Sorry to hear that friend.
I don't know if there are alternatives there, but if possible you could try duck instead. We usually eat the breast of the duck, and I like it a lot.

I feel sorry and hope you'll have a solution.
Still, I have a question, why do you want them alive? When roasted chicken is less expensive. (at least here in europe)

I was curious too, at first just thought it's about keeping the bird alive for as long as possible and that is more or less what it is but to an extreme, in their culture fresh on the spot slaughter for festive meals is a tradition.

That would explain the price too, unfortunately.
