Beyond the smoke.

A call to reason in times of conflict.

Have you noticed that we live in times when logging onto social media feels like being slapped in the face by headlines telling us about strategies, reprisals, and growing tensions between nations, as is currently happening with the United States and Iran, with explosions shaking distant cities? But amid these tactical maps and fiery speeches by leaders, we often lose sight of what is essential: human life.

When these bombs explode, they do not distinguish between ideology, borders, or reasons of state. The roar of war silences a child's laughter, a student's dreams, and a worker's efforts alike.

In these scenarios of uncertainty, it is vital that we pause, take a deep breath, and remember that beneath the flags that differentiate us, the same human heart beats.

Let us make peace an act of courage!

This society is confusing us and accustoming us to the idea that peace is a sign of weakness, but that is totally false and far from the truth because in this world that pushes us toward quick hatred and violent reaction, peace is a courageous act of reason. It means having the audacity to look at the enemy and recognize a human being with the same fears and desires as us, because the real battle is not between East and West, but against this barbarism of destruction and the civilization of dialogue, because war should ultimately be a defeat of the imagination. It is recognizing and accepting that we have been unable to use our most powerful tool, the word. We must regain empathy, not as a luxury but as a survival mechanism, because if we allow hatred to dictate our future, we will only inherit ashes.

Reading about different topics and wandering around the internet, one of the simplest and at the same time most complex questions to answer comes to mind:

  • Why do we fall into the abyss of war?

In order to avoid any kind of conflict, we must first understand what is pushing us toward conflict itself. Why, despite knowing the pain it causes, do humans continue to stumble over the same stone again and again? Because although geopolitical conflicts are complex, their psychological roots are often sadly simple:

  1. Fear and mistrust: The main driver of war is fear of "the other." When we don't know or understand a culture, it's easy for fear to fill those gaps with monsters. Mistrust makes us believe that attacking first is the only form of defense.

  2. Dehumanization: For a human being to harm another, they must first stop seeing them as a person. War narratives turn people into "targets," "collateral damage," or "threats," erasing their individual stories and their right to live.

  3. The cycle of revenge: History shows us that violence never resolves grievances; it only postpones them. An "eye for an eye" leaves us all blind. Many current wars are echoes of past wounds that were never healed through justice or forgiveness, but were instead attempted to be covered up with more force.

  4. The struggle for resources and power: Often, behind ideological rhetoric, lies simple human greed for control, whether of territory, oil, or influence. Material interests are disguised as noble causes, dragging thousands to sacrifice for the benefit of a few.

Change is possible, but we cannot control the decisions made in those presidential offices.

However, we can control how we react, and we have the ability to choose and refuse to hate. We can educate ourselves about those we are told are our enemies, and we can demand diplomacy instead of destruction because peace begins in the mind of each of us today. While the world holds its breath, let us choose to be the voice that calls for calm. Let us choose hope over fear and reason over force, because at the end of the day, we all share the same sky, and it is our responsibility to ensure that it is not darkened by the smoke of war.
