There was a stretch of about fourteen months that i do not have a lot to show for externally. No big moves made. No visible progress on the things i had said mattered to me. Just getting through each week with the basic things intact. Staying afloat. Keeping myself together enough to function.
At the time i felt a constant low level shame about it. Like i was supposed to be building something and instead i was just maintaining the minimum. Every week that passed without obvious progress felt like evidence of something failing.
Looking back i understand that period differently. A lot was happening internally that had no visible output. Things were being processed, shed, slowly reorganised in ways that did not show up in any measurable form. The work was real even though nothing about it looked productive from the outside.
Some seasons are genuinely for growing. For building and creating and pushing forward. And some seasons are just for surviving, for getting yourself through something hard without completely coming apart at the seams. Both are legitimate. Both are part of a full life.
The pressure to always be in growth mode, to always be optimising and improving and making forward motion, is one of the more quietly damaging things about the culture we live inside of. It leaves no room for the human reality that sometimes you are just holding on. And holding on, when holding on is genuinely what the moment requires, is not failure.
It is enough.
If you are in a season right now that looks nothing like what you imagined for yourself, where survival is the actual daily goal rather than anything bigger than that, give yourself permission to just do that. Survive the season. Get through it with your integrity reasonably intact and your relationships as cared for as you can manage.
The building seasons will come back. They always do.
But you have to get through the hard ones first.
