There is a Yoruba proverb that says that 20 children cannot have 20 childhood years for good 20 years and I think that is what is going on. So many of my friends that we share the same childhood together when we were very young. I don't even think I have anyone who is still a friend now, though we are always in good time and we still check up on each other and say hi to one of two old time WhatsApp group where we still say happy birthday to each other and stuff like that.
So literally I don't have a childhood friend that I can say that I'm close to to you now and there's nothing to be sad about about that. Life happens to everyone and we all grow then everybody start finding their way and because you're a friend that doesn't mean that your life is going to be the same. One can get married before the other, get rich before the other, settle down, have more business before the other.
When all this laxity or space gaps comes in, it starts to separate things, whether you like it or not. It works and that's how life is. So whenever this kind of a thing happen the gap between friendships starts to widen and if maturity and care is not taken, everybody is going to go and find their way and it's very rare to find friends that stick out for each other to the end of time.
While some are busy settling down and having family some people continue their education to obtain masters, PhD and so on. Whereas for the other friend he might have settled down and have two to three kids already. Like I said life happens and that's adulthood for you.
But whenever I think about this shared friendship of a thing I realized that there are different friendships that we have back then. There are some that you are close to, there are some that are your seatmates in university, secondary school or primary school days. Back then there is no scheduling of meeting.
We meet every day and we catch up on things or maybe friends that you walk back home with or you walk from home with. I'm talking about friends that can wait for you to be fine before you start moving. There are also friends back then that if they have a football, everybody is going to play.
There are also friends that if you are not careful enough they can ruin your life. There were good times when it comes to friends. There are bad times when even the closest friends get to fight with each other.
But these days adulthood made everyone to be so much sure that a little offense you can block that person or not relate with that person again. But back then even if something goes wrong the fact that you get to see yourself every day means that in one way or the other your heart will melt against each other and before you know it you are fine. Friendship then was not complicated compared to now.
There is no question of asking what you do for a living, the salary. Life does not separate people then. Achievement is not a separation.
Everybody is fine so far you are in the same class together. Friends are friends forever and that's what we all thought while we were young. But getting older complications to life start to happen.
Responsibility, demanding work, families, bills to be paid, distance. Some are living in the city, some are still in the village, some are stuck the way they grew up and maintaining friendship along long distances is not a child play. I still remember so many of my friends that I grew up with though.
All that I do now is see them on Facebook and drop a like or good comments to cheer them up and stuff like that. As years go by a lot of memories start to disappear. The talking start to change.
Start to change from greeting each other to asking about family and everything. Friendship has now grown to another level at this point in time. But you have to understand something: a relationship is not a must that it will follow you all through life especially when there is no marriage.
If it's friendship it can get disconnected at any time. I know back then you needed a friend to play with in your childhood days but now responsibilities of life have deprived you of playing around, so there is more to take from life with this. All these things I'm saying does not mean that friendship is meaningless.
Friendship is part of our life and they bring us good memory and a good memory will make you smile decades later whenever you remember some of them.
But as it is now, it looks like it we really grow up. Don't we?
