Visit to the zoo of 26 in Havana / Visita al zoológico de 26 en La Habana (eng-esp)

Yesterday we continued our vacation in Havana and decided to go to Zoo 26 with the kids.

This is the largest urban zoo and the second largest in the entire country.
Another interesting detail is that this zoo is the oldest in the country, having opened in 1943, with only 95 species of birds and 39 reptiles.

Today, it is the most important zoo in the country, surpassing the National Zoo of Cuba, which is the largest in the country.

One element that distinguishes it above all others is this sculptural installation of deer, created by the famous artist Rita Longa.

Emblems of our fauna and our country adorn the entrance to the beautiful enclosure.

Since the last time I came until now that I'm back with the kids, I've noticed several positive changes, such as: For example, this signage serves as a visitor guide.

This small train tours the zoo's 23 hectares. However, it only passes through the main avenues and cannot access the upper or lower areas, so it misses several of the cages.

This was one of the first areas to welcome visitors. Last year, it was occupied by crocodiles. The islands in the center were once inhabited by a family of spider monkeys.
However, now it is almost devoid of water, crocodiles, and primates.

The first area we found was the small primate area. We arrived just as the different monkey species were enjoying lunch.
We were lucky to arrive just as the technicians were feeding the animals.

The vast majority of classrooms have signs like these or smaller ones with the specimen's name inside.

After finishing in the small primate area, we found a beautiful surprise in one of the trees. This zoo.

My stepchildren had never seen a red squirrel, much less expected to encounter a pair, less than 3 meters away.

Once we left the squirrels, we arrived at the big cat cage.

The leopard and jaguar cage is a delight for all zoo visitors.
Coming face to face with these beautiful and dangerous felines is an experience no one has ever imagined.

No child or person will ever forget it.

My biggest surprise was the lion.
Normally, jaguars and panthers were in this area. There was even a pair of tigers once, but never a lion.

The lions' area was always the meadow, or the den as others called it.

My family and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing an adult lion up close.
When I saw them there in the den, they were always surrounded by vegetation and the lionesses. And if you add to that the protective fences and the height of more than 10 or 12 meters, I've never been able to describe it as clearly as I did this time.

I definitely had a good time today, but seeing a lion up close and then watching it being fed was the best part of the day.

Of course, we took photos, videos, and did everything in our power to ensure this moment would go down in history.

Leaving there, I encouraged them to look for the lion's den to see if we could find the lionesses we hadn't seen in the cages.
And what a surprise to us was to find another adult male lion, like the king of the prairie at the zoo.

The next area we came across was the great apes.

Here they were showing chimpanzees, orangutans, and a couple of gorillas, but we couldn't get a good look at them because they were sleeping inside their cells.

Of the gorillas, we only found their pool and some sun-drenched rocks. With that sun, I wouldn't go out for anything either.

The vegetation and botanical design of the 26th Street Zoological Garden is something that has always amazed me, as it feels like walking through a tropical rainforest.
In addition to so much greenery and foliage, most of the path feels cool and shaded.

After the primates, we find this amusement park or recreational area for children inside the Zoo

A playground with multiple games and equipment for young children to enjoy is the ideal place to rest and take a break. before continuing the walk or the rest of the zoo areas.

The children really enjoy watching the animals, but they appreciate these minutes or hours of leisure and enjoyment.

The children and my wife took a photo next to a historic statue of the zoo. I don't think any family has passed by here and hasn't taken a photo in front of this fountain, or rather next to the pair of siblings petting a small rabbit. This is another of Rita Longa's wonders.

After a short snack break, we decided to head down the path and thus arrived at the small carnivore area.

I didn't see the sign for this small mammal, but it looks like a jackal to me. Do you know it?

She was eating a little piglet...
or what was left of it.

Another surprise at the zoo was finding this pregnant hyena.

And his partner.

These young hyenas approached me very affectionately, so I convinced her to let me take a selfie with them.

The rest of the tour was spent observing the cages of herbivorous mammals like this beautiful fallow deer. Speckled...


This camel also agreed to the selfie.

She's definitely photogenic.

We didn't make it to the raptor area this time.

We'll leave that one for another time since it's quite extensive and we were short on time.
However, I remember when I came and went to visit El Condor.
This enormous and beautiful animal had been a gift at the time from Chilean President Salvador Allende.

And finally, before leaving, we stopped to buy some ice cream to combat the immense summer heat in the Caribbean.

I hope you enjoyed this beautiful zoo where time flies but friendships always remain.

Hola, comunidad #viajera alrededor del mundo.
Ayer continuamos nuestras vacaciones a La Habana y decidimos irnos al Zoológico de 26 con los niños.

Este es el zoológico urbano más grande y el segundo más grande de todo el país.
Otro detalle de interés, es que este jardín zoológico es el más antiguo del país, ya que fue inaugurado en 1943, con solo 95 especies de aves y 39 de reptiles.

Hoy en día es el Zoológico de mayor importancia del país, superando al Zoológico Nacional de Cuba, el cual es el de mayor del país.

Un elemento que lo distingue por encima de todos, son esta instalación escultórica de los venados, realizada por la famosa artista de la plástica, Rita Longa.

Algunos elementos emblemáticos de nuestra fauna y nuestro país, adornan la entrada al hermoso recinto.

Desde la última vez que vine hasta ahora que regreso con los niños me encuentro con varios cambios positivos como, por ejemplo, esta valla de señalización que sirve de guía para el visitante.

Este pequeño tren realiza un recorrido por las 23 hectáreas del zoológico. Sin embargo, solo pasa por las avenidas principales, pero no puede acceder a las áreas altas o bajas, por lo que se pierde varias de las jaulas.

Esta era una de las primeras áreas que recibe al visitante. El año pasado estaba ocupada por cocodrilos. Las islas en el centro las poblaba una familia de monos araña.
Sin embargo, ahora se encuentra casi sin agua, sin cocodrilos y sin los primates.

La primera área que encontramos fue el área de primates pequeños. Llegamos en el momento en que las distintas especies de monos disfrutaban del almuerzo.
Tuvimos la suerte de llegar en la hora en que los técnicos alimentaban a los animales.

La gran mayoría de las aulas presentan señalizaciones como estas o más pequeñas con el nombre del espécimen en su interior.

Al terminar en el área de los pequeños primates nos encontramos con hermosas sorpresa en uno de los árboles de este jardín zoológico.

Mis hijastros nunca habían visto a una ardilla roja y mucho menos esperaban encontrarse a una pareja, a menos de 3 m de distancia.

Una vez que abandonamos a las ardillas llegamos a la jaula de los grandes felinos.

La jaula de los leopardos y jaguares son el deleite de todos los visitantes del zoológico.
Ayer se enfrenta frente con estos hermosos y peligrosos felinos es una experiencia que ningún niño ni ninguna persona olvidará jamás.

Mi mayor sorpresa fue el león.
Normalmente en esta área estaban los jaguares las panteras incluso hubo una pareja de tigres una vez pero nunca un león.

La zona de los leones siempre fue la pradera o el foso como otros le decían.

Mi familia y yo disfrutamos muchísimo de ver a un león adulto tan de cerca.
Cuando los veía allá en el foso siempre estaban rodeados de vegetación y de las leonas. Y si a eso le sumas las actas rejas de protección y los más de 10 m o 12 de altura nunca pude detallarlo como en esta ocasión.

Sin dudas hoy la pasé bien pero ver a un león de cerca y luego ver cómo lo alimentaban fue lo mejor del día.

Por supuesto que nos tiramos fotos tomamos videos hicimos de todo lo que está en nuestras manos para que este momento quedara grabado para la historia.

Saliendo de ahí los animé a buscar el foso de los leones para ver si encontramos a las leonas que no vimos allá en las jaulas.
Y cuál fue nuestra sorpresa al encontrarnos con otro león macho adulto, como el rey de la pradera en el zoológico.

La siguiente área que nos encontramos fue la de los grandes primates.

Aquí mostraban a chimpancés orangutanes y un par de gorilas pero que no pudimos observarlos bien ya que se encontraban durmiendo adentro de sus celdas.

De los gorilas solo encontramos su piscina y unas piedras soleadas. Con ese sol, yo tampoco saldría a nada.

La vegetación y el diseño botánico del jardín zoológico de 26 es algo que siempre me ha maravillado ya que pareciera que camino por el interior de una selva tropical.
Además de tanto verdor y follaje la mayor parte del camino se siente fresca y se camina la sombra.

Luego de los primates encontramos este parque de diversiones o áreas recreativa para niños en el interior del zoológico

Un parque infantil con múltiples juegos y aparatos para el disfrute de los niños pequeños, es el lugar ideal para descansar y hacer una pausa antes de continuar el paseo o las restantes áreas del zoológico.

Los niños disfrutan mucho de observar a los animales pero agradecen estos minutos u horas de ocio y de disfrute.

Los niños y mi esposa se tomaron una foto junto a una estatua histórica del zoológico. Creo que no hay familia que haya pasado por aquí y no se haya tomado una fotografía en esta fuente o más bien al lado de la pareja de hermanos que acarician a un pequeño conejo.
Esta es otra de las maravillas de Rita Longa.

Después de este receso de una pequeña merienda decidimos de tomar el camino y así llegamos al área de los pequeños carnívoros.

El cartel de este pequeño mamífero no lo ví, pero me parece un chacal. ¿Lo conocen?

Se estaba comiendo a un pequeño cerdito...
o lo que quedaba de él.

Otra de las sorpresas del zoológico fue encontrarme a esta hiena embarazada.

Y a su compañero.

Estas jóvenes hienas se me acercaron de forma muy cariñosas, por lo que la convencí de permitirme tomarme un selfie con ellas.

El resto de recorrido lo realizamos observando las jaulas de mamíferos herbívoros como este hermoso gamo moteado...

Este dromedario también accedió al selfie.

Sin duda es fotogénica.

Esta manada de pecaríes tenían hambre.

Al área de rapaces no llegamos a ir en esta ocasión.

Esa la dejamos para otro momento ya que es bastante extensa y estábamos cortos de tiempo.
Sin embargo recuerdo cuando venía e iba a visitar El cóndor.
Este enorme y hermoso animal había sido un regalo en aquel entonces el presidente chileno Salvador Allende.

Y finalmente antes de irnos pararnos para comprar un helado y así combatir un poco el inmenso calor del verano en el Caribe.

Espero que les haya gustado este hermoso zoológico donde el tiempo pasa volando, pero las amistades siempre quedan.
