Improvement begins with reading / La superación comienza por la lectura (eng-esp)

Hello, friends of Holos & Lotus.

Today more than ever I need to write.
@sicologopoeta, @marabuzal, and @restaurador know what I'll be talking about later. Also @elviguitarra, who is pursuing a PhD in art sciences and has had to read a lot.

The thing is, many people in this community and others talk about self-improvement, about what you have to do to improve yourself: about the need to improve yourself. But in all the reading I've done over the past few months, I haven't read anyone recommending reading.
And I'm not talking about reading a specific article, or a post, or a person's profile. When I say read, I mean read literature.

It may seem that, as a writer, I'm recommending my work or that of my friends. Or that I want people to read because I like to read.
Nothing could be further from the truth.

I insist that people read, because literature saves in every sense of the word.

Literature de-stresses.

At this point, I don't need to explain myself too much. Reading, especially fiction, clears our minds; we travel to other universes, other worlds, sometimes completely new and interesting.

Reading allows us to move through multiple moods; something that isn't necessarily a negative.

I've heard of several people who claim to relax by reading poetry in Facebook groups and profiles.

Others dedicate themselves to writing when they're feeling the worst, or sit down to read children's literature when they're depressed.

The point is that those words of others, those stories, can become your own and become paths to salvation.

Literature increases vocabulary.

Literature is always seeking to increase vocabulary. In fact, the more varied we read, whether in genres, eras, authors, or languages ​​(translated or not), our vocabulary will grow exponentially.

As a teacher in a school, I have encountered students with a vocabulary equal to or less than a reggaeton song.

Students who hand me work copied from the internet, and the irrefutable proof of what they've done is that I ask them the meaning of a random word written in their work, and they don't know what it means.

Literature improves spelling.

Also, as a teacher, I've encountered exams that were perfect in content, but with more than 12 and even 20 spelling mistakes.

On Facebook, on the internet in general, we can find posters like this.

Some with spelling mistakes, others with writing errors, but all with this kind of "horror."

My wife is a musician. I've seen how she suffers when someone sings or plays off-key. Her expression is one of pain. Well, this is the equivalent of being off-key for us writers.

You don't have to be a writer to want to write correctly. We should all be ashamed of ourselves for presenting ourselves as professionals and not mastering the basics of our language, whatever it may be.

Literature improves analytical skills.

Beyond spelling and grammar, literature improves our analytical skills. Both poetry and fiction force us to think outside the box, to think abstractly, to put ourselves in the shoes of others (it increases our empathy); and that inevitably makes us think.

Reading regularly is the equivalent of taking our brain to the gym every day and exercising it.
Consequently, the more we exercise it, the stronger it will be.

Literature increases our culture.

By reading, we learn. We learn about the cultures of other countries, other continents, other eras. We learn about the way of thinking of other peoples.
You have to read everything all the time. The world's great intellectuals always reference great books, great works.

Reading generates change

Literature has always been feared because those who read, those who write, generate revolutions.

Literature initially generates a change in us, and we generate change in society.

There are thousands of cases like the one I'm telling you about. From the classic Uncle Tom's Cabin (which helped eradicate slavery), Capital (communist movements), or The Second Sex (a key book in feminist movements).
And I'm just mentioning these. History is full of examples. We ourselves, here at #hive, are doing it.

However, the main change we should expect and generate through literature is the change in ourselves. It's about improving ourselves through self-improvement.

Reading will make us better people and professionals. It will better prepare us for life.

Please, never stop reading.

Hoy más que nunca necesito escribir.
@sicologopoeta, @marabuzal y @restaurador saben a qué me referiré más adelante. También @elviguitarra, quien está cursando un doctorado en ciencias sobre arte y ha tenido que leer bastante.

El asunto es que muchas personas hablan en esta comunidad y en otras, de superación, de lo que hay que hacer para superarse: de la necesidad de superarse. Pero en todas estas lecturas que he realizado a través de estos meses, no he leído que alguien recomiende leer.
Y no me refiero a leer un artículo determinado, o el post o perfil de una persona. Cuando digo leer, me refiero a leer literatura.

Puede parecer que como soy escritor, estoy recomendando mi obra o la de mis amigos. O que quiero que las personas lean porque a mí me gusta leer.
Nada más alejado de realidad.
Isisto en que las personas lean, porque la literatura salva en todos los sentidos de la palabra.

La literatura desestresa.

En este punto no necesito explicarme demasiado. A leer sobre todo literatura de ficción, nuestra mente se despeja; llegamos a viajar a otros universos, otros mundos, en ocasiones, completamente nuevos e interesantes.
La lectura nos permite transitar por múltiples estados anímicos; algo que no necesariamente es un hecho negativo.

He conocido de casos de varias personas que afirman relajarse leyendo poesía en grupos y perfiles de Facebook.
Otros, que se dedican a escribir cuando más mal anímicamente, o se sientan a leer literatura infantil cuando están deprimidos.
El asunto es que, esas palabras de otros, esas historias, pueden convertirse en tuyas propias y en vías de salvación.

La literatura aumenta el vocabulario.

La literatura siempre está en busca de crecer en vocabulario. De hecho, mientras más variado leemos, ya sea en géneros, épocas, autores o idiomas (traducidos o no), nuestro vocabulario va a crecer exponencialmente.

Al ser profesor en una escuela, me he encontrado con estudiantes con igual o menos vocabulario que una canción de reggaetón.
Estudiantes que me entregan trabajos copiados de internet y la prueba irrebatible de lo que han hecho, es que le pregunto el significado de alguna que otra palabra al azar, escrita en su trabajo, y no saben qué significa.

La literatura mejora la ortografía.

También, como profesor me he encontrado exámenes perfectos en contenido, pero con más de 12 y hasta 20 faltas de ortografías.
Eso es triste. Como mismo lo es esta imagen:

En Facebook, en internet general, podemos encontrar de carteles como ese.
Algunos con falta de ortografía, otros con errores de redacción, pero todos con este tipo de “horrores”.

Mi mujer es músico. He visto como sufre cuando alguien canta o toca desafinado. Su expresión es de dolor. Bueno, este es el equivalente de desafinar para nosotros los escritores.

Es que no hay que ser escritor para querer escribir correctamente. Debería darnos penas vergüenza a todos nosotros presentarnos como profesionales y no dominar lo básico de nuestro idioma cualquiera que sea.

La literatura mejora la capacidad de análisis.

Más allá de la ortografía y la gramática, la literatura mejora nuestra capacidad de análisis. Tanto la poesía como la literatura de ficción, nos obliga a pensar fuera de la caja, a pensar de forma abstracta, a ponerlos en el lugar de otros (incrementa nuestra empatía); y eso obligatoriamente nos hace pensar.

Leer con asiduidad, es el equivalente a llevar nuestro cerebro diariamente al gimnasio y ejercitarlo.
Por consiguiente, mientras más lo ejercitemos, más fuerte será.

La literatura aumenta nuestra cultura.

Al leer aprendemos. Aprendemos de culturas de otros países, otros continentes, otras épocas. Aprendemos la forma de pensar de otros pueblos.
Hay que leer de todo y todo el tiempo. Los grandes intelectuales del mundo, siempre referencian a grandes libros, a grandes obras.

Leer genera cambios

La literatura siempre ha sido temida porque aquellos que leen, aquellos que escriben, generan revoluciones.
La literatura genera, inicialmente, un cambio en nosotros y nosotros generamos el cambio en la sociedad.
Casos como este que les digo hay miles. Desde el clásicoLa Cabaña del Tío Tom (contribuyó a erradicar la esclavitud), el Capital (movimientos comunistas) o El segundo sexo, (libro clave en los movimientos feministas).
Y solo menciono estos. La historia está llena de ejemplos. Nosotros mismos, aquí en #hive lo estamos haciendo.

Sin embargo, el principal cambio que debemos esperar y generar a a través de la literatura, es el cambio en nosotros mismos.
Es superarnos a través de nuestra auto superación. Leer nos hará mejores personas y profesionales. Nos preparará mejor para la vida.
