A walk through the icons of Vedado / Un paseo por los íconos del Vedado (eng-esp)

Hello, fellow #travelers of this beautiful world.
The boys and I went for a walk through Vedado, the capital.

We always want to show our children the places that are important to us. In my case, it's no different.
The boys wanted to walk and explore, so I indulged them with an 11-km tour.

The first stop was on the way to the La Timba neighborhood.

With the population expansion of the capital, some neighborhoods were built around the wall of the Colón Cemetery.
Unfortunately, these are quite poor and not very attractive neighborhoods.

However, I had to pass through these neighborhoods every day on my way to school for four and a half years.

These alleys connect Nuevo Vedado, my neighborhood, with the best and most beautiful parts of Vedado.

And Paseo Street proves it.

We leave via 27th and Paseo Street. Revolution Square can be seen in the background.

But we were heading in the opposite direction.

Beautiful churches and convents abound in this area.
In fact, my school is right next to one of these Discalced Carmelite convents.

For a long time, at the beginning of the last century, this was one of the tallest buildings in the country.
It's located at 23rd and Paseo.

And right on that corner, we stopped to call a friend of my stepson's father to visit him.

But to visit it, we had to continue down Paseo.

We continued down and arrived at the Friendship House. A place with a rather tragic love story.

This is said to be the mansion of one of the wealthiest men in the country during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

It was built in honor of his wife. However, he was never able to live with her in this house built for his delight.

Because of their love, they broke many of the norms of their time and were rejected by society.

He had to petition the Pope to annul his marriage to another wife so he could marry the woman he loved. Something that was not well-received at the time.

And after he was able to marry her and build her the house (this mansion), she died.

And so we arrived at the house of the friend we were going to visit.

Luisito is one of the greatest Harley-Davidson experts in Cuba.

And since we were there, we would continue our tour along the boardwalk.

The first thing we noticed in this view of the Meliá Cohiba hotel.

During my childhood and adolescence, this was the hotel that was the reference point for the five-star hotel in the capital next to the Hotel Nacional de Cuba.

Very close to it and right on the seafront, is the Riviera Hotel.

For my boys, this was a nice sight to see, as they hadn't had the opportunity to see several five-star hotels so close together. Unless it was in Varadero.

And they thought this was a hotel, but I explained that it was once one of the country's main markets.
Galerias Paseo even housed the most famous Jazz Café inside.

It was on the wall of the Malecón that I realized my teenage dreams of becoming a conqueror.
For Havana residents, this is a magical place full of stories.

The avenue and the sea of Havana's Malecón are a sight no one will forget, much less on a day as splendid as this.

This building can be seen from my apartment, more than 4 kilometers away. The boys were amazed to find it.

We recognized it, above all, by the immense crane that stands out over the landscape, even at night.

And, of course, the best way to walk along the seawall is on the wall.

The breeze, the sun, and the Caribbean Sea in the background create the perfect setting for taking photos like these.

This is one of the new hotels that have been built here on the boardwalk.

This is the corner of Avenida de los Presidentes and the boardwalk.

For my country's culture, the gray building in the background is one of the most important venues: Casa de Las Américas.
Not only has my wife, aka her mother, @elviguitarra, performed concerts here, but it has also been the stage for several of the most important cultural events in Cuban history.
It's also home to the Casa de Las Américas Literary Prize, one of the most important and prestigious awards on the continent and in the world.

With the opening of home sales, situations like these are seen very frequently. Some houses appear without structural repairs.
Not even the paint. While others are perfectly repaired thanks to a capital investment.
I know this is normal, but it still spoils the landscape.

A little further on, we arrived at the United States Embassy.
This is a rather imposing and beautiful building.

Just in front of it, they built this plaza and named it the Anti-Imperialist Tribune.
Fortunately, all that remains of what was originally this tribune is this rather pretty dove.
Internationally renowned bands such as Air Supply, Manu Chao, Residente, Kool and the Gang, Audioslave, and others have performed here.

At this corner of La Piragua and the El Tángana gas station, the summer carnival begins, which will kick off tonight. Hence the preparations.

A national orchestra must be performing here at night, very close to dawn.

El Gato Tuerto is another nightclub, very famous for hosting performances by several of the country's most famous solo artists and small acts.

And so we arrive at the famous Hotel Nacional de Cuba. This is our country's flagship hotel.

Of course, taking photos at the hotel entrance wasn't enough. We also wanted to go into the garden and buy a bottle of water while we were there.

We enter the garden where interviews with participants in the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema have historically been conducted; and where many historical figures have had breakfast during their stay at this historic site.

We were surprised to find these roosters and hens roaming around the yard.

And while we were surprised by the chickens, we were even more pleasantly surprised when we came across this family of peacocks, peacefully grazing in the interior garden of the Hotel Nacional de Cuba.

I found this loose feather on the ground and, of course, took it home as a souvenir.

During the Spanish colonial era, heavy artillery was usually stationed at the entrance to Havana Bay and on our coasts to protect the country from pirate invasions and sieges.

However, these small silos were almost used during the famous Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962.
This is not certain, but it's a kind of urban legend... and I don't doubt it.

The initial idea was to walk along the Malecón to 23rd Street and take a photo at the base of the waterfall.

However, when plans changed and we checked into the hotel, we decided to keep the idea but take the photo from the top of the waterfall, instead of the base.
I think it's more exciting that way.

As we were leaving, we found this at our feet.

Here you can see the hotel logo and the year it was founded.

With that, we decided to return when you celebrate your 100th anniversary.

Of course, we'll return sooner, but for the centennial, we'll definitely celebrate here.

We left the Hotel Nacional de Cuba and headed down "O" Street to La Rampa. This is one of the best-known areas of 23rd Street. It's named after the hill that goes up (or down, depending on your perspective) to or from the Pabellón Cuba.

In the Cuba pavilion, we took the opportunity to rest a little.

There the guys had a soft drink (well, I had a beer 🍻) and continued our journey.

So we arrived at 23rd and L, the corner of the Yara Cinema, the Habana Libre Hotel, and the famous Coppelia ice cream shop.

Nor There are plans, but when you have the chance to enter this famous and busy ice cream shop, and do so without waiting in line, you don't think twice.

There are few things that make a child happier than ice cream.
The service was very good and fast.

Up to this point, we have visited several of the most famous historical, cultural, and iconic sites in the capital, and especially in Vedado.

This is the new star of the show: the Habana Selection Hotel, the tallest building in the country.

With more than 46 floors, it can be seen from almost any point in the municipality and some high points in the province.

Then we continued our way along 23rd Street until we reached 23rd and 12th.

We passed the Riviera movie theater, almost before reaching G Street.

Avenue of the Presidents, or G Street, as it is better known.

Near F Street, we came across this beautiful church. This type of building was common during the early 18th century.

I also showed the kids where the National Comptroller's Office building used to be.
It's a shame it was closed, since this building is a masterpiece of neoclassical architecture.

Right next to the Chaplin cinema is the Cuban Institute of Radio and Television (ICRT). Our country's animation studios are also located here.

This is the city's first-run movie theater. This theater has the best audio system in the province and an excellent 3D theater.

The Summer Film Festival is opening here.

This is the Strawberry and Chocolate nightclub, named after the famous film of the same name.

It's undoubtedly a popular spot for the province's most bohemian crowd.

The corner of 23rd and 12th Streets is famous for many reasons. But without a doubt the most famous of them is because it was here that Fidel Castro gave his speech protesting the murder of the Cuban athletes who were on board the Barbados plane on December 6.
It was then that he uttered the phrase when an energetic and virile people cry, injustice trembles.

When we got home, we sat down to rest, each of us drinking almost a whole bottle of water. Then we took a shower, and anyone would have thought we were just lying down to rest, but it was nothing like that.
The adrenaline rush of so many emotions in a single day kept us awake.
Our 11-kilometer journey concluded by passing through the Colón Cemetery again, and from there, we headed home.

It was 11 km filled with history, culture, and the best of Cuban art.

Hola, amigos #viajeros de este hermoso mundo.
Los muchachos y yo nos fuimos de paseo por el Vedado capitalino.

Nosotros siempre queremos mostrarles nuestros hijos, los sitios importantes para nosotros. En mi caso, no es diferente.
Los muchachos querían caminar y conocer, por lo que yo los complací con un recorrido de 11 km.

La primera parada fue de camino al barrio de La Timba.

Con la expansión poblacional de la capital, se construyeron algunos barrios alrededor del muro del cementerio Colón.
Por desgracia, estos son barrios bastante pobres y nada bonitos.

Sin embargo, por estos barrios tuve que pasar a diario de camino a mi escuela durante 4 años y medio.

Esos callejones unen a Nuevo Vedado, mi barrio, con lo mejor y más hermoso del Vedado.

Y la calle Paseo lo demuestra.

Salimos por la calle de 27 y Paseo. Al fondo se puede ver la Plaza de la Revolución.

Pero nuestra dirección era en sentido opuesto.

Hermosas Iglesias y conventos abundan por esta zona.
De hecho, mi escuela queda justo al lado de uno de estos conventos de Las Carmelitas descalzas.

Durante mucho tiempo, a principio de siglo pasado este fue uno de los edificios más altos del país.
Queda en 23 y Paseo.

Y justo en esa esquina nos detuvimos para llamar a un amigo del papá de mis hijastros, para visitarlo.

Pero para visitarlo teníamos que continuar bajando por Paseo.

Seguimos bajando y llegamos a la Casa de la amistad. Un sitio con una historia de amor bastante trágica.

Se cuenta que esta es la mansión de uno de los hombres más adinerados del país durante finales del siglo 19 y principios de 20.

La construyó en honor de la que fue su esposa. Sin embargo, nunca pudo vivir con ella en esta casa construida para su deleite

A causa de su amor, rompieron varios esquemas de su tiempo y fueron rechazados por la sociedad.

Él tuvo que solicitar al Papa la anulación de su matrimonio con otra esposa, para poder casarse con la mujer que amaba. Algo nada bien visto en aquel entonces.

Y luego de poder casarse con ella y construirle la casa (esta mansión) ella murió.

Y de esta manera llegamos a casa del amigo al que íbamos a visitar.

Luisito es uno de los mayores conocedores sobre la Harley Davidson que hay en Cuba.

Y ya que estábamos allí continuaríamos nuestro recorrido por el malecón.

Lo primero que nos encontramos por esta vista del hotel Meliá Cohiba.

Durante mi infancia y adolescencia, este era el hotel la referencia de los Cinco Estrellas de la capital junto al Hotel Nacionalnde de Cuba.

Muy cerca de él y justo en el malecón, se encuentra el hotel Riviera.

Para mis muchachos aquello fue algo lindo de ver, ya que no habían tenido la oportunidad de observar a varios hoteles cinco estrellas tan cerca. A no ser que fuera allá en Varadero.

Y pensaron que este era un hotel, pero les expliqué que en su tiempo fue uno de los principales mercados del país.
Galerías Paseo, Incluso, en su interior llegó a tener el Jazz Café más famoso.

En el muro del malecón fue donde ví realizado mis sueños de conquistador en la adolescencia.
Para los habaneros, este es un lugar mágico y repleto de historias.

La avenida y el mar del Malecón habanero, es una visión que nadie olvida. Mucho menos, en un día tan espléndido como este.

Este edificio se ve desde mi apartamento, a más de 4 kilómetros de distancia. Los muchachos se quedaron maravillados al encontrarlo.

Lo reconocimos, sobre todo, por la inmensa grúa que sobresale sobre el paisaje, hasta de noche.

Y, por supuesto, el malecón, como mejor se camina, es sobre el muro.

La brisa, el sol y el mar Caribe de fondo, crean el mejor escenario para tomarnos fotografías como estas.

Este es uno de los nuevos hoteles que se han construido aquí en el malecón.

Esta es la esquina de la Avenida de los Presidentes y Malecón.

Para la cultura de mi país, el edificio gris al fondo, es uno de los lugares más importantes que hay: La Casa de Las Américas.
Aquí no solo ha realizado conciertos mi esposa o sea, su madre, @elviguitarra, sino también ha sido escenario para varios en los acontecimientos culturales más importantes de la historia cultural cubana.
Además, es la sede del premio Literario Casa de Las Américas, uno de los premios más importantes y prestigiosos del continente y del mundo.

Con la abertura de la venta de las casas, situaciones como estas se ven con mucha frecuencia. Algunas casas aparecen sin reparar su estructura.
Ni siquiera la pintura. Mientras que otras se encuentran perfectamente reparadas gracias a una inversión de capital.
Sé que esto es algo normal, pero aún así afea el paisaje.

Un poco más adelante llegamos a la embajada de los Estados Unidos de América.
Este es un edificio bastante imponente y hermoso.

Justo al frente construyeron esta plaza y la nombraron: Tribuna anti imperialista.
Por suerte, de lo que fue al inicio esta tribuna, ahora sólo queda esta paloma bastante bonita.
Aquí han realizado conciertos agrupaciones de renombre internacional como Air Supply, Manu Chao, Residente, Kool and the Gang, Audioslave, entre otros.

En esta esquina de La Piragua y el servicentro El Tángana, es donde inician los carnavales de verano, que van a comenzar esta noche. De ahí los preparativos.

Aquí debe presentarse alguna orquesta nacional en la noche, bien cerca de la madrugada.

El Gato Tuerto es otro bar nocturno, muy famoso por las presentaciones de varios de los solistas y pequeños formatos más famosos del país.

Y así llegamos al famoso Hotel Nacional de Cuba. Este es el hotel insigne de nuestro país.

Por supuesto que no nos bastó con fotografiarnos en la entrada del Hotel. También quisimos entrar hasta su jardín y de paso a comprar un pomo de agua.

Nos adentramos a jardín donde históricamente se han realizado las entrevistas a los participantes en el Festival Internacional del nuevo cine latinoamericano; y donde tantas personalidades de la historia han tomado su desayuno durante su estancia en este sitio histórico.

Nos sorprendió encontrar estos gallos y gallinas sueltos por el patio.

Y si bien nos sorprendieron los pollos una mayor grata sorpresa nos llevamos al encontrarnos con esta familia de pavos reales, pastando plácidamente por el jardín interior del Hotel Nacional de Cuba.

Me encontré esta pluma suelta en el suelo y por supuesto me la llevé de souvenir.

Generalmente en la entrada de la Bahía de La Habana y en nuestras costas ,99durante la época de la colonia española apostaban artillería pesada para proteger al país de las invasiones y asedios piratas.

Sin embargo estos pequeños silos, casi son utilizados durante la famosa crisis de los misiles de Cuba en 1962.
No hay una certeza de esto, pero es una especie de leyenda urbana... y no lo dudo.

La idea inicial era caminar hasta la calle 23 por todo el Malecón y tirarnos una foto en la base de la cascada.

Sin embargo, al cambiar los planes y entrar al hotel, decidimos mantener la idea pero la foto nos la tomamos desde la cima de la cascada, en lugar de la base.
Creo que así es más emocionante.

Aquí les dejo una foto de mis muchachos con el hotel en el fondo.

Ya cuando íbamos de salida, nos encontramos esto a nuestros pies.

Aquí podemos ver el logotipo de hotel y el año de su fundación.

Con eso nos pusimos de propósito volver para cuando entonces cumplas sus 100 años de fundado.

Por supuesto, vamos a volver antes pero, para el centenario, de seguro lo festejaremos aquí.

Salimos del Hotel Nacional de Cuba y nos dirigimos por toda la calle “O” hasta La Rampa. Esta es una de las zonas más conocidas de la calle 23. Se le dice de ese modo por la loma que sube (o baja, depende de la perspectiva), hasta o desde el Pabellón Cuba.

En el pabellón Cuba aprovechamos para descansar un poco.

Allá nos los muchachos se tomaron un refresco (bueno, y yo una cerveza 🍻) y continuamos el viaje.

Así llegamos a 23 y L, esquina del Cine Yara, el Hotel Habana Libre y la famosa heladería Coppelia.

Tampoco están los planes, pero cuando te encuentras la posibilidad de entrar a esta famosa y concurrida heladería, y hacerlo sin hacer la cola, no lo piensas dos veces.

Hay pocas cosas cosas que hace más feliz a un niño que el helado.
El servicio fue muy bueno, rápido.
Hasta este momento , hemos pasado por varios de los sitios históricos, culturales e icónicos más famosos de la capital y sobre todo, del Vedado.

Esta es la nueva estrella del espectáculo: el Hotel Habana Selection, el edificio más alto del país.

Con sus más de 46 plantas, puede divisarse desde casi cualquier punto del municipio y algunos puntos altos de la provincia.

Luego continuamos nuestro camino por toda la calle 23 hasta llegar a 23 y 12.

Pasamos frente al cine Riviera, casi antes de llegar a la calle G.

La Avenida de Los Presidentes o calle G, como mejor se le conoce.

Cerca de la calle F nos encontramos con esta hermosa iglesia. Ese tipo de construcciones era habitual durante el principio del siglo 18.

También les mostré a los muchachos cuál era el edificio de la Contraloría Nacional de la República.
Es un lástima que estaba cerrado, ya que este edificio es una obra maestra de la arquitectura neoclásica.

Justo al lado del cine Chaplin, está el Instituto Cubano de Radio y Televisión o ICRT. También aquí radican los estudios de animación de nuestro país.

Este es el cine de los estrenos en la ciudad. Este cine tiene el mejor sistema de audio de la provincia y una excelente sala de 3D.

Aquí se está estrenando el Festival de Cine del Verano.

Este es el centro nocturno Fresa y chocolate, llamado sin honor a la famosa película homónima.
Sin duda es un lugar de referencia para los más bohemios en la provincia.

La esquina de 23 y 12 es famosa por muchas razones. Pero sin duda la más famosa ellas es porque en este lugar Fidel Castro promoció su discurso en protesta al asesinado de los deportistas cubanos que iban en el vuelo del avión de Barbados, el 6 de diciembre.
Fue entonces cuando pronunció la frase de cuando un pueblo enérgico y viril llora: la injusticia tiembla.

Al llegar a casa nos sentamos a descansar y cada uno se bebió casi un pomo de agua entero. Luego nos bañamos y cualquiera hubiera pensado que nos acostamos a descansar pero, nada que ver.
La adrenalina de tantas emociones en un solo día, nos mantenía despierto.
Nuestro recorrido de 11 kilómetros concluyó al atravesar nuevamente el Cementerio Colón, y de ahí a casa.

Fueron 11 km lleno de historia cultura y lo mejor del arte cubano.
