Am I Fit? Maybe Not Yet, But I’m Not Where I Used To Be
To be very honest, I don’t know if I’m fit. I mean, I’m not that guy with six packs or bulging muscles that look like they swallow beans every morning. But if you ask me if I’m better than I was last year, I will smile and say, yes boss, I dey try small small. This fitness thing no be joke. It takes more than motivation. It needs discipline, mindset and sometimes, small stubbornness
You see, growing up I didn’t really care about health or fitness. As long as I wasn’t sick, I believed I was okay. But these days, after climbing stairs and breathing like person wey run marathon, I start to ask myself questions
I remember one day I tried to race a small boy on the street, just for fun. Omo, after the first 10 seconds I started seeing stars. I nearly faint! That moment was the wake-up call for me. I just told myself, “Guy, you go soon reach 40, better start taking care of yourself now
So I made up my mind to start small. I began with daily walks in the evening. Sometimes 20 minutes, sometimes just round the compound. I downloaded a fitness app that reminds me to drink water (because I used to go whole day without even remembering). Then I started cutting down on soda and fried foods. It wasn’t easy o! But gradually my body started adjusting
Now, I try my best to do light workouts in the morning, just 10 to 15 minutes stretch, push-ups, and squats. No gym yet because money no too dey, but I dey make use of what I have. My plan is to stay consistent and then maybe later I go join one gym close to my area.
Also, one thing I’ve realized is that being fit is not just about the body. It’s also about the mind. I try to sleep well, avoid unnecessary stress and stay away from too much social media wahala. Mental health na big part of fitness too.
I won’t lie and say I’ve arrived. I still dey struggle sometimes. I still eat late night food once in a while and skip workouts when I’m tired. But what matters most to me is that I started. I dey try.
To anyone out there thinking of starting their own fitness journey, my advice is this start small. Don’t wait for perfect time or gym membership. Use what you have, move your body, eat better and rest well. With time, you’ll see changes.
I may not be 100% fit now, but I’m not where I used to be. And for me, that’s something worth celebrating
