It has been a while I have been trying to figure out how to reduce the dust from the balcony especially when my elderly wants to water their plants, especially my dad due to foot drop syndrome, his is not able to wear slippers easily, and often time because of dusty balcony, his feet will eventually bring in extra dust and sand.

A neighbour recently shared a photo of her balcony that had trouble with an upstairs neighbour who decided to wash the balcony with massive water, causing all the unit at the lower floors suffered the dirty water; other that I felt bad for the neighbour, I noticed that serene green fake grass section looks really serene and pleasant, so I asked her where she got it.

I also asked her if this has helped to reduce further dust coming into the living room, and true enough, she said the right texture will also act like a doormat because the dust will be stuck amongst the fake grass, and it is relatively easy to vacuum it.

Immediately, I got one to give it a try, and I noticed that though the surface was very comfortable, it was too small and easily move about.

I let my parents try it out, and they immediately liked it, so now it is important to find a bigger piece after I measured the space.

I walked all the way back to the hardware store close to my home and found the similar texture but bigger, and with delightful thanksgiving, it wad the last one 😅 I knew it is now or never. I better purchase it now. The rest of the texture were too plastic-y, short and rough.

I also bought a mesh for a better grip below so that the bottom surface of the fake grass won't touch the floor too much to avoid water contained there, and provide a better outlet or dirty water.

Before I proceed with measuring the mesh and padding, a thorough sweep and clean on the tiles at the balcony is greatly needed to minimise build-up stains.

Once the measurements are done, I cut the mesh to its right size exactly where I want it to be placed.

As you can see, though the fake grass has pre-punched holes, it wasn't many.

Without a mesh as a bottom "elevated" layer, build-up dirt can lessen the fake grass' durability in the long run.

I used a zip tie to mount the fake grass onto the mesh to make sure it doesn't move around.

Good thing that poking extra holes wasn't too hard, though a bit tiring.

After mounting it on, following the meshes shape, I cut the fake grass carpet slowly, and this bigger version is a lot thicker than the initial small one. It does take a while to get it through, with patience and sweat.

Finally, this is the finished work. I didn't want to extend it out to the edge of the balcony, not only because I didn't have enough to extend all the way out, it is also the pots are there and it will make more of a mess, and we can still sweep the floor under the pots to keep things tidy.
