Fixing office laptops part 1 (Successful)

avatar

Laptops are actually very daunting, it is not as easy to upgrade as we needed due to the model parts that sometimes are discontinued, because they want us to get a new one, or else, the parts will cost a bomb if acquired from the brand seller itself.

old memory that couldn't handle more advanced memory hungry applications.

One of my colleagues actually had a similar problem. Though his laptop is considered quite recent, bought during lockdown, which was around 5 years, but due to the brand's insistent to purchase new equipments, the repairs become much higher with the reason of "lack of supply, and need to source from world wide branches"

To us, of course this sounds super ridiculous, and since the laptop's warranty has expired and unable to renew, I started out to shop for parts, where I too also needed to upgrade my very own 9 year old laptop.

Passing by shops that are vacant in a losing vibrant mall

It wasn't easy as many retail stores actually sells a lot more expensive because they factor in the shop rental into the costing, so after checking a few places, it was a better decision to purchase from the very same shop's online store to benefit the online store platform's ongoing promotions.

Getting the mail within 3 hours!

Getting the memory upgraded immediately

Adding in extended SATA hardisk for more spaces

And with that, the cost of driving out to source parts including petrol (gas) and parking fees were eliminated; and even with delivery fee included it was more affordable ( because it is local ) and transportation wear and tear is avoided.

Usual daily jam while heading to work

Staying in the capital city of a development country, the roads aren't the most accessible yet, and more importantly, time was saved and I could still resume other work while waiting for the parts to arrive.

That's a learning process for me: timed management while juggling multiple tasks.

The good thing about my colleague's laptop upgrade is that there is no need for data migration, as laptops are way more sophisticated than pc. Without proper dockers for one to one offline cloning, it doesn't work well.

It was a real nightmare to tackle system cloning, and from there, I learned a lot of painful lessons.

That being said, the lesson issue needs to go to another post because that's too long and too painful to share in one post.

Let's leave the success story here first.

Overall, with an extended hardisk and a new swap RAM , my colleague is currently a "happy customer" 😊

And I got an additional "tip" from him through a newly opened boba tea shop. The tea was nice, but the boba was a little too hard to chew compared to other leading brands out there.

So that's it, juggling work, sourcing from shop to shop close by did earn me a nice step achievement.

A good day's work done 👍🏻

Congratulations on your success in upgrading your colleague's laptop! I feel you on the often notable challenges to dealing with different hardware makers, as I assist people with their computers as well. On my side I just had to buy a new laptop to replace my previous one that died, and because it's becoming harder to find new laptops that accept hard drives as opposed to SSDs, I ended up having to upgrade my whole backup system (hard drive cloner, 6 hard drives), which was made for hard drives, to one that worked with SSDs, which cost quite a bit more. I've learned to become very picky and selective about laptops, after working with so many over the years. 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙

Oh good gosh! Listening to all these upgrade problems sends a chill unto my spine. The issue was because I am still maintaining an in-house old system, the newer ones aren't as friendly as intended.

Wanna hear something funny?
Most of the hospitals are actually still using XP because they never wanted to upgrade because the system they used is stable. Anything that requires online, they use their phones to download.

Hence this is kind of my office's own thought process as well. Don't mess with the current system as long as it is still working 😅

Ditto that, it drives me bonkers! Yes, I've seen that with many companies, they stay with older hardware and software that still works.

Hahaha...yep, I've seen XP pop up a lot in situations like that too.

Well, if something works the way that it should, and it does what is needed, then there is little to no good reason to upgrade, other then for security issues. The BSDs are like that, as well as some iterations of Linux. 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙

Kudos! Good on you my friend. You always live up to your name, we always learn new things you discovered. Especially the branding that forces us to buy new by making the working machines obsolete.

A few months back I decided to buy a new (second hand, new for me 😄) one because the old one wouldn't support win 11! The old one was super slow ( purchased in 2016). One of my friends suggested to buy a second hand laptop of good configuration. I am currently happy with that one.

I am glad to hear that you could upgrade the laptop finally! Thanks for sharing your story with us.
