Wow! You got a "jack in the pulpit" there. It is a pretty rare arum. We have a lot of "Lords and Ladies" around here, and they are in the same family. They are toxic because of the calcium oxalate crystals, but years ago they were used as medicine for many ailments, and if the roots are prepared properly, they are edible too.

Mind you, in the Philippines, we have what we call gabi, or taro. They are also in the arum family, and they make very nice vegetables. But some types, especially the red ones, can make your throat feel a little itchy, so we try to avoid them. Thinking about it now, that was probably because they were high in oxalates.

But these Jack-in-the-pulpits and Lords and Ladies are really, really high in oxalates. If you swallowed one of them, it would feel like swallowing broken glass and could cause swelling of your airway passages. I tried licking a very tiny amount of the sap, and my tongue felt like it had a few splinters in it, haha! Well, that shows how silly I can be sometimes, but it was a calculated trial. I was confident with arums because we eat them in the Philippines.

Oh well, there is lots to tell about all these kinds of plants!
