Korean Acappella with Maytree

Greetings and salutations Hivers. Today let's go into another Three Tune Tuesday post.

As always, thanks to @ablaze for kicking off this great series. Lots of people join in each week — follow the tag to find a ton of good music recommendations!

Today my son was watching the latest video from Maytree, so they are on my mind. Are you familiar with these guys? They are a Korean Acappella group that gained fame for covering a wide variety of pop culture songs. They also do original work, but it’s really their pop culture covers that put them on the map — and what they still mostly post on their YouTube channel.

If you have no idea what I'm talking about, their appearance on America's Got Talent will give you a taste:

I'll just pull out three of what to me are their most unique or most impressive anyway. But since these are so short, I absolutely encourage you to go to their channel and listen to more.

Let's jump right in.

Street Fighter II

If you grew up in arcades or lived through the early console wars, you’ll recognize these sounds immediately. Maytree somehow manages to recreate not just the music but the whole feel of Street Fighter II — the character select screen, the background beats, all of it — with nothing but their voices. It’s not only amazing, but a perfect nostalgia hit.

Now I kind of want to go play the game...

Back to the Future

This one is pure fun. The Back to the Future theme is so iconic, and they manage to hit all the big dramatic swells without a single instrument. If you grew up loving the movies like I did, you’ll get a kick out of hearing how they bring it to life with just their voices.

Now I kind of want to go watch the movie...

Super Mario — Jump Up, Super Star

I've never played this game, but both my kids are obsessed with both the game and the song. I’ve heard it a million times coming from the Switch and from their own singing, but hearing Maytree do it is something else entirely. They sound nearly identical to the song in game (slight Korean accent aside). It's very impressive.

It may not surprise you to hear that this video is my kids' favorite.

Again, visit their channel for more. Warning: they have a lot of videos! If you like this kind of thing, you could spend a lot of time on their channel, so be careful!

Anyway, so what's your favorite?

The Back to the Future theme still haunts me to this day! We used to play it in marching band as part of our halftime show and the song opens with a cymbal crash that I would occasionally miss the cue for and screw everyone else up. I was just a freshman back then, so it should have been forgivable, but I still remember the look of disappointment on the directors face when I would miss it.
