Yurt Time

A little over nine years ago I helped my father-in-law build a yurt. He and his brothers had bought small plots of property in Cascade, Idaho when they were in high school. The plot of land my father-in-law owned stayed unused for many years, until he decided to build a yurt on it in 2017.

It started out with just concrete supports, a basic beam support structure, platform and circular trim board. From there, we spent an entire week in the mountains, building a yurt.

It's developed quite a bit over the years. Here's the yurt now. We try to plan at least one trip per year to take our boys camping.

What originally started as a rustic, fun way to camp has turned into a more luxurious way to camp with all of the additions made. The side walls you see there house solar batteries and a very large water tank.

A large solar panel provides a surprising amount of power. It's enough to run lights, charge phones, run multiple fans, and even power a microwave, refrigerator and freezer. It also provides power to a water pump, so there's running water and even a working toilet.

There's a massive propane tank that not only is used for cooking, but also supplies heat in the winter and a backup power source through a propane/gasoline generator when the solar batteries aren't enough.

The best part of the design is it has enough room in it for two cots, a futon, queen size bed, an armoire, small kitchen and dining table. It's taken many years to upgrade it, but it's become a very fun camping destination. It's rustic enough that it doesn't feel like an Air BnB, but modern enough it doesn't feel like you're without any modern comforts.

It was a lot of fun hanging out as a family. Cell service is sparse, which isn't a bad thing when you're trying to get away from it all. When we arrive, the first thing we see is this sign, as we sigh a breath of relief and start to relax.

!LOL possibly? Even hot dogs taste better cooked over a fire in the mountains.

I know the plan is to keep it in the family as a retreat of sorts, so Lord willing I'll get to see my kids and grandkids enjoying it.

Thanks! It's not a bad idea. I've seen some people do that and then build a deck and roof around it, then add solar panels. I'm not sure if you could put in a septic tank and have it drain into that. Then you'd just need water. Some people dig wells and others just bring it in with them.

Yeah, that is the big thing. If we were to buy a remote piece of land we would want electric, water, and sewer too, so at that point you are putting out a lot of capital.

Beautiful yurt! I helped a friend build one in high school(I was there for a weekend, I was by no means a main component of the build), and when I saw it’s progress a handful of years later, it had transformed from a primitive structure to something much more luxurious and modern, such as the journey yours has taken. It’s funny to me that in my experience, all yurt projects either turn into something beautiful and homey, or just turn to complete ruins. Good on you guys for going the high road!
